View Full Version : Only 3 cables to slimline dish - what will I lose?
Hi,
I'm moving to a new house and the builder ran only 3 cables to the outside where the dish will be installed.
I currently have the slimline dish, two HR20s, and one HD/Tivo receiver. I pay for most of the available HD channels (except for some of the premium ones). I do receive my locals in HD. On this install, there are four cables connected to the dish which is then connected to some sort of multi-switch box.
If I just have the three cables connected to the dish, what capabilities / channels would I be losing?
Thanks in advance,
Mark
If you have only three cables connected to the dish, you'll only be able to connect three tuners (you currently have six). You have exactly two options to get full functionality:
1. Run a fourth cable from the dish into the house and use your existing multiswitch.
2. Buy a SWM8, mount it outside using four cables from the dish, use one of the cables for the HR20s and the other two for the HDTiVo from the legacy ports on the SWM8.

If I replace my old HD-Tivo with another HR20, would option 2 still work? Where can I learn more about the SWM8? Can't find it on the DirecTV site.
Thanks

You will probably want to do that sooner or later anyway (replace the HD Tivo), as it will almost certainly not get any satellite HD by the end of the year.
In that case, if you put an SWM at the dish, a single coax in would serve both HR20's (and up to four more tuners down the road).

DirecTV installed the new dish with the SWM8 yesterday and everything works great! I replaced the HD Tivo for another HD DVR (HR21). The whole install took about an hour. Very impressive service and technology. Thanks DirecTV! :D

Not aimed at you but I hate builders who just run wires without thinking. Had a cust who was getting D* E* and Cable. Idiot had ran only 3 wires out [ thinking one for each ] and then had run only 2 HDMI [ instead of 3 ] to each TV. Had to open the ceiling to run all wires.

If I was a builder, I would run 3 -4 wires for each service (Redundancy)

Same here. but hey, that would been spending $20 more on RG6.
