How to dictate where a recording starts?

When I'm recording a show that has already started, why do some shows pick up the recording at the place that I recorded, and others go all the way back to the beginning? Is there a way to have an option as to when the recording should start?

The recording starts at the beginning of the buffer typically .. If you just recently changed to a channel, the buffer will not be as long as if you had been on that channel for a while.
