of running just one line from the dish to the HR21? I mean other than the fact you'll only have one tuner? Does this cause any problems in normal operation?

There shouldn't be... I have both an HR20 and and HR21 running with one line, and have had no problems (boh have been connected that way since December)

If you currently have two lines connected and you remove one, you will want to reset the dvr after removal to get rid of the SFSS on tuner 2 error.
Other than that, you are good to go.
