Don't have the quote from any official source but this info dosen't sound untruthful...

Since we've been talking about the Cendyne/Pioneer units when discounted 50% off, here is some info on future Pioneer models, hopefully Cendyne will continue to repackage the pioneers at the reduced price.

Sorry for the poor GERMAN to ENGLISH translation:

The DVR-A06 will be more of an updated version of the DVR-A05 and it's only the CD writing speed that's going to be faster than its predecessor (24x vs. 16x).

But just in time for next Christmas Pioneer plans to release the DVR-A07 featuring 8x/4x DVD-R/RW burn speed. Chip.de writes that this however might be the fastest DVD burner Pioneer will make (Babelfish translation):

To the Christmas business in this year Pioneer with the Dvr-a07 plans a genuine successor for the current Dvr-a05. Then 8x burning speed on DVD R-S and 4x on DVD RW media is to be achieved.

Here then the technical end of the speed increase could have to be seen, so Pioneer, because 16x speed requires a too high number of revolutions of the media. A "speed limit" would give it with 52 to 56x to rotational speed in things CD R-S.

An 8x DVD-burner is equivalent writing speed to 72x CD-R recording speed It's a pitty that Pioneer are not interested in doing a dual format DVD-burner.

So if these newer models look good to you, skipping the next sale and waiting a few months might help. But then again the media to handle the faster speeds either is not available or very expensive. Have to go out of your way to find 4x -R or 2x -RW media.

I have a pioneer DVR-104 (Cendyne). I was going to get the DRU-500A, but after seeing this, I may decide to get the new 8x pioneer drive instead. Or I may just hold out until blue laser DVD-R enters the mainstream. My 2x DVD-R is good enough for now.

I have both the 104 and 105 and to be honest, I only use 1X -RW media and 2x -R media so I could have two 104s and it would not make a difference.

Only benefit of 105 over 104 is the CD-R/RW speed on the 104 = 8x/4x while the 105 = 16x/8x But since now I'm almost exclusively using DVD-R or -RW for data archivning again the diffence is nil.

But since I got the 105 for $150 via Staples deal and bought the 104 for $250 best price retail at the time (didn't even know about those periodic Staples/OfficeMax deals) I like the 105 better :D

Well, I've got a separate 16x CD-RW drive that I had before I got the DVD burner. The extra speed doesn't make that much of a difference to me, but YMMV.

I'm quite happy with my 105. At the good prices people are getting them ($150-$170 at officemax, etc), it is quite a good deal

The actual dvd burning speed doesn't really affect me. When I am taking 1-2 hours to do video capture, some more time to edit commercials, 5-6 hours to convert to mpg (for 2 hour program). Another hour to do the burn is no big deal.

Plus right now, I have my laptop setup to do all the capture and mpg conversion, and then I just move it over to my old AMD 400 with dvd burner to burn the dvd. Works out quite well, especially since my 501 can't reach my main computer, but my laptop can, and my network cable can reach my laptop from my main machine/router. With this setup, I can delay getting a new main machine for a while... especially since the dvd burner burnt a large part of my computer budget........ I guess the point of this is some of my time is freed up by just doing the 16 minute transfer to my dvd burner machine, so my laptop time isn't help up doing the dvd burn.

What is the difference between the A05 and the 105?
I bought a Cendyne A05 and it died within a week. I exchanged it and ended up with a 105 (same Cendyne box) and it has worked fine since. I asssume the A05 is an upgrade of the 105 but I have not seen anything that shows a difference.

Actually there is no difference between a A05 and the 105 except the sw bundled with the package.

Thanks, that's good to know.
