This bar is there all the time during trickplay except on repeat use of the replay button.
It blocks my view of news banners and etc.
It blocks view of paused content for ~2min.
I am a long time DTV user but new to Dbs.
This is for me the biggest peeve with Dtv dvrs.
Also with the hr-10 but at least it would pause and step w/o the "bar".
How hard can this be to fix-at least as to the pause time out ala hr-10??
Does this pick anyone's b----- also?
L
Yeah, this bugs me too. It would be nice if there was a way (color button?) to hide it.

An alternative to the EXIT button is to press BLUE twice. This pops-up and removes the mini-guide.
I choose to use BLUE instead of EXIT, because if you are watching a recording from your playlist, you can be thrown out of your playback to live TV if you accidentally hit EXIT more than once. This has happened to me on many occasions and I loathe that EXIT doesn't simply clear the graphics but is an enhanced form of STOP. (See my sig for more on my loathing of EXIT.)

If you're coming out of trickplay to Play, simply hit Play a second time.

Used to bother me too, then discovered pause + exit+ play, and bar goes away.
Play twice is even better
With my HR10 every time I hit 30 sec. skip the bar pops up. On the HR20s it doesn't.
Yes, instant replay and SKIP are the only two times the progress bar does not appear.
The bar appears for PAUSE, REW, FFW, SLIP, SKIP-TO-TICK and the first press of PLAY. It also appears when changing channels.
I would love a feature that was available on the HR10 (through a back door remote sequence) to permit the progress bar to quickly toggle off on the HR20. It could be implemented as a back door hack or as an option in the DISPLAY settings. After all, we have an option to specify how long the banner is displayed, so why not an option to specify how long the progress bar is displayed?

Those two sentences contradict each other.

If you hit EXIT twice just hit previous channel and it will go back to the recording.

30slip fast forwards 30 seconds but lets u see the video while its doing it.
30skip fast forwards 30 seconds but without showing u the video so its faster.
If you hit EXIT twice just hit previous channel and it will go back to the recording.Yeah, but who wants to be interrupted like that? There's also the potential that when you're throw to live TV you'll see something you don't want, for example, a key scene in a program you're recording, or the final score of a game you're recording while watching something else?

MENU > Search > Keyword Search
Enter 30SKIP
Continue
Press SELECT on All
Wait for it message "No matching programs"
You can now press >>| and instantly skip (jump) 30 seconds ahead and the progress bar will not appear.
To restore SLIP functionality, repeat the search steps but this time enter 30SLIP as the keyword.
Does the size of the status bar change with respect to the size of the screen? On my little TV it's fine, but if I had a bigger TV and the status bar were proportionally bigger it would bug me too.
All on screen graphics are proportional to the size of the screen. If you see a progress bar covering 90% of the screen horizontally in 16:9 mode on a 26" TV, the progress bar will still cover 90% of the screen horizontally in 16:9 mode on a 60" TV.

It could be implemented as a back door hack or as an option in the DISPLAY settings. After all, we have an option to specify how long the banner is displayed, so why not an option to specify how long the progress bar is displayed?I could not agree more. I came from DISH DVRs, which had FANTASTIC platform controls and were very zippy, and moved to DTivos. Of course the DTivo was reliable and the DISH DVRs were anything but, so it was a no-brainer trade-off.
I was very vocal about the time bar, until I learned the back door trick, which is one of my favorite things about the DTivos.
Let's break this down:
What is the actual purpose of the time bar? It gives the user information.
A) It tells you the name of the program,
B) where you are relatively within the program,
C) whether it is recording or not,
D) and what company cashes your checks for the privilege of mucking up your screen with useless information when you don't want them to. Their logo is the biggest, most visible feature of the time bar. I wonder why that is?
We don't need D, now, do we? I think we can all agree on that.
We don't really need C either, since if we really want to know if this is a live recording or a previously-recorded program, there's a huge amber light on the front panel.
A, well that is available by pressing "info", so why not allow US TO DECIDE WHEN WE WANT TO BE REMINDED WHAT SHOW WE ARE WATCHING instead of reminding us when we don't need to be reminded.
That leaves B, where we are, relatively speaking, in the program, as the only important information.
When do we need this information? Not often. Certainly not every time we pause, every time we slo-mo, every time we do anything at all.
Tivo had it almost right. DTV has gone way the other direction in ergonomics. It's not that hard to think through. Bottom line, the time bar should ONLY appear when pressing "play", and should exit the screen in 1 second or less. It's currently an ergonomic nightmare, and should also be smaller, less obtrusive, and more transparent.

to be clear,
I have ffd ,rwd and skip keys
>>,<< and >|
when i use the >| key I get a 30 sec advance in 2 sec time. I timed it. I can program up to 20 of these as shown in the right end of the bar. During this 2 sec (or all 40 sec) of stills the BAR is always present.
I have 0255 ce.
conclusion: bar always present except on replay.
Is yours different?

There is an option to change the action of the >| from 30 second "SLIP" (the default) to 30 second "SKIP". With SKIP, the advance of 30 seconds happens instantly, and the time bar does not show up.
To switch, do a Keyword search on 30SKIP, continue, choose all, when the search returns no programs, you have switched to SKIP. (note: i'm not sure if this works if you do the search while watching playback, to be sure, do it while watching live tv)
To switch back, do the same thing but search for 30 SLIP. 30 SKIP will stay enabled through updates and resets.

Glad to help! I still haven't gotten used to using SKIP again after almost a year of using SLIP. I've found that I like to see the commercials that go by as I SLIP forward, because sometimes I'll see a promo for a new series or movie that I otherwise would not have seen if I had been SKIPPING.
Drew, you are a broadcaster's wet dream :D
Drew, you are a broadcaster's wet dream :DWell, catching promos while slipping is only a bonus, but not the primary reason I use SLIP.
The problem is that for me there's not enough control using SKIP, where four presses would sometimes end up being in the middle of a scene in the program I'm watching, and then I have to hit REPLAY a few times. With SLIP, I have control and can exit SLIP mode as soon as I see the program resumes after the commercial block, and with overshoot compensation, hitting PLAY while in SLIP when I see the show start, it jumps me exactly to the beginning of the scene. I start right where I want to ... so that's the bigger benefit to me. :)
