View Full Version : Dish 721 PVR - Screensaver ? Any way to turn it off?

I noticed something odd the other day...

I turned on the TV (and SAT etc..) early in the morning, went to work in the other room (I listen to it as I work), and about a few hours later (2-3 I think), I came in to see a nice Tree Pattern being pasted all over the TV set. A few seconds later it changed to a maze, further watching and it was a dish logo.

This seems to be a screensaver.. but WHY?

I didn't have the screen paused, in fact the Dish had no idea I wasn't sitting there watching it.

Any idea WHY the screensaver would come on while watching a show? (I was able to remove it rather easily by pressing "GUIDE").

If there isn't a way to turn it off, does anyone know the criteria that decides if it should turn on or not? I presume it's time based, but perhaps it's also channel based??

I can't fathom why someone would put a screensaver on a television, except perhaps if the PVR function was in pause mode, otherwise it's kind of silly.

I even called Tech Support, thier solution and explaination was that it is supposed to do that, every 7 minutes (yea RIGHT!) and to turn it off just press guide. Obviously that tech had no clue what he was talking about since I've watched the TV for more than 7 minutes before and it didn't come on.

Very odd.

Did you leave it with the guide up? Or on a full screen regular channel? I saw that when left on guide, I think when someone leaves it in guide mode it should default back to regular full screen instead of screen saver.

They are trying to save your TV. If you leave something bright like a guide or a menu on the screen, you risk burn in, especially if you have a widescreen TV.

Hey, at least they vary it. I'm just happy I don't have to see bouncing WebTV logos anymore.

I don't recall leaving it in Guide mode, pretty sure I left it on TV mode, I'll double check tonight.

What got me the most was that the Tech had no clue as to what was causing it , or didn't understand exactly what I was asking (I think he assumed it was Stuck ON the screensaver, yet I told him it wasn't several times).
