I have an opportunity to purchase an almost brand new HR21-700 for $150. That's $50 cheaper than if I got it from DirecTV.

If I go with the private party, will my DirecTV contract go back to 2 years? Will DirecTV warranty the receiver? Will I have to pay for activation fees? Sorry for all the questions.

It's from someone on craigslist. Thanks.

You need to find out if the unit is leased (it probably is). If it is leased you will not be able to activate it and the person that deactivated will be charged for the full amount of the unit if it is not returned to DIRECTV.

If it is a owned unit you will be able to activate it but you will probably need to buy a new access card from DIRECTV for $20.

I just learned it's a "new" but opened HR21-700, but unactivated. I should be good? I got him down to $135, seems like a good deal to me.

Have you tried calling DirecTV to see if you qualify for any discounts? They're putting out some pretty good offers for loyal customers lately...

I would suggest getting the info for the unit from the seller and call DIRECTV first just to make sure you will not have any problems.

I've only been with DirecTV since Jan. 2008. I will call them when I get home and see what they can offer, but I'm not going to hold my breath. If they can't give me a decent deal, I will get the serial from the other unit and call DirecTV back.

Thanks for the suggestions.

So... to save about 50 bucks, you search craigslist, find a seller, worry about it enough to question this forum, decide to then haggle with Directv, and go with craigslist if they "don't provide a good deal" Now you saved your 50 bucks, hope you receive the unit, hope it works, hope you don't need a new access card and hope there aren't any PPVs on it.

Not worth it to me. Go to the source or BB. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Here is a little more information I found out - he purchased the HR21-700 from an authorized ebay vendor for $225, never activated it, it's brand new with unopened access card.

I talked him down to $135, seems like a good deal to me. Any other advice? :)

It's laundered.

I think you'll be throwing away $135.

You can get a new one at Costco for $169.

I was looking at getting one on ebay for about 125.00 from what seemed like a honest seller ( feedback was all good ). I thought what the heck call Directv and see what they will offer. The worst thing that can happen is they say 199.00 and I hang up and get it elsewhere. The first CSR could offer nothing but hooked me up with a higher up. I got the HR21-700 for 99.00. So by calling I saved money and did not have to worry about getting a unit off ebay that I could not activate. It don't hurt to call......

I don't know the exact amount, but a receiver that was leased and never activated or sent back incurs a fee of something like $400.

This receiver could be bad news.

So I got the said HR21, although even thought a lot of you told me not to. I paid $100, it's brand new, and it says Non Program on the side with a pink sticker. Any ideas what that means? It's in a retail box, with BBC's.

I tried to haggle with DirecTV, lowest they would go was $150 + 12 shipping.
