Rochester, NY HD locals are CONFIRMED. Wife says they look good. Unfortunatley I am traveling for work.

I would like to know if these are on 99 or 103. If they are on 103, does this mean that they are not being broadcast in MPEG4?

As stated on the other thread, CH. 31 still will not work for me. I have called technical assistance and they are escalating. We will wait and see.

I don't know what satellite these are on but my suspicion is 99c.

Everything from 103 and 99 is MPEG4

All new HD added by DirecTV is in beautiful mpeg4!:)

It's just a matter of time before the plug is pulled on the old HD mpeg2 stuff.

I still do not get channel 31 (Rochester). Are we all in the same boat here or do I need to start "pushing buttons and pulling plugs".

Already did a service refresh this morning plus a RedButtonReboot as directed by a CSR tech. As of now though, still get 8, 10 and 13 in HD/SD while 31 HD shows "programming not available in your area (727)" - 31 SD is still fine as always.

Also - I just verified that 31HD is still broadcasting via OTA.

I had HD this morning on NBC but didn't check the other channels. Hopefully 31 is just a technical issue.

Yes, they are on the same channels. I have my HR20 set to hide SD duplicates so I just see 8, 10, 13 & 31 on the guide-- and they're all the HD version.

No 31 here either - Judge Judy shows as "blacked out" on 31HD. I somehow suspect not even the mighty Judge Judy has blackout rules. Spoke to D* customer support and the rep confirmed they are aware of the issue with Channel 31 and are working on it. No ETA.

No 31 here also. I'm sure they will fix it soon. I'm just glad I can watch local channels again on the big screen. SD looks awful and I am so used to the OTA that has not been connected since my upgrade.

Has anyone managed to fix the channel 31 problem with a repeat of Satellite Setup? That's generally the last thing the CSR's have been telling me to try but they also said that since the other local HDs are ok it probably wouldn't work.

Nonetheless, I'm going to wait until bedtime to do that because I'm not in the mood to go through that whole process right now since I can just watch on OTA this evening anyway.

So is anyone in the area here on the forum getting this channel yet? and if so did you have to do anything special to get it to kick in?

I'd appreciate any feedback.

Rochester isn't that bad. I also do not get ch 31. It must be an issue with either DirecTV or the station.

It's a known issue with D*. They are working on it.

It's working here now as well. This is sweet. Now I can just use a cheap unpowered antenea maximized for 21-PBS (which is monsterously strong signal here) and hide it in a corner! No more having to peak it for 8, 10, 13 and 31 everytime the signal varies.

This is a good thing!

Why don't they carry our local CW channel? We get CW out of Washington but it is SD :(

Why don't they carry our local CW channel? We get CW out of Washington but it is SD :(

Good question. It used to be a Time Warner Rochester-owned entity up until Q4 2006, and could only be found on cable - not even an OTA signal for SD. But it is now owned by the same company (Newport Television) that owns WHAM13-ABC, which does broadcast it OTA on 13.2. Maybe there's some lingering condition from the TW sale that said they can't redistribute to Satellite operators for a period of time? Just a guess, really can't think of another reason outside of D* not carrying it due to capacity restrictions (which should be a non-issue now).

Another curious question for me, why Washington? Why not NYC? Not that I watch CW much, if at all anyway. I'd kinda like to see MyTV-18 too, but that's probably a pipe dream.

stoutman
08-21-08, 04:52 AM
D* refuses to carry WHAM 13.2 because it says that it would open the possibility of having to air other sub channels in the Rochester market. The issue will not be resolved until Oct. 2009 when WHAM's retransmission contract expires or D* decides to have a change of heart.

Hey, just out of curiosity, what transponders are you guys seeing on 99(s)? Over here in Syracuse (supposed to get HD locals in September), I'm seeing 95's on #'s 1 & 3, and 24 on #6. I was figuring 1 & 3 were for you guys. Trying to be patient waiting to see something new light up.

FINALLY!!!!!

Up until about 5 PM yesterday, the locals were HD, but they all had bars on the sides of the picture. I played with the settings (TV and receiver) to no avail. We went to dinner and when we came back the pictures filled the 16:9 screen.

This is excellent. The locals finally look good on my 58" plasma.

I am watching "two and a half men" now on FOX and my HD has the pillar bars on the side. All the HD programming on 8, 10, and 13 as well.

Why is this not in 16:9 full screen like all the other HD channels?

Because it is only a re-run on a different station. You will most likely not see any 16:9 programming during the day time on your local stations. This is the norm.

Exactly - Some of the national morning news shows will be in HD, and then you shouldn't expect any HD on weekdays until prime time.

Yes - The Olympics are the exception to this :)
