I have been with Direct tv for over 6 years. If they dont offer FREE upgrades to my 2 tivo units to the new HD dvr from direct tv and a new hd stand alone receiver with free HD 5 lnb dish upgrade by December 2008, I will leave and switch to cable.
I am not alone I know many Direct tv subscribers who dont have the ability to receive the locals witrh just a dtv converter because we are too far from all networks. I am sure there are many people in the usa who will jump the direrct tv and dish network , btw, ship.

You may want to search these threads under "deals", as there are a number of threads and posts indicating DirecTV has actively been providing those kinds of equipment exchanges. Many posters state they have been given such opportunities to upgrade....so I guess they woke up a bit ago. :D

Interesting, what is it you expect? you say upgrade of your Tivo Units. are they HR10 units? if not why would Directv give you HD units for your old (STandard Def) units
Many, many of us have been offered that. Look around.

I believe it's open to everyone with old DirecTV HD equipment.

Give them a call. I called last week and asked for a HR21 and they wanted to give me 4 of them, 2 H21s, a slimline dish, and intstallation all for free. They didn't even want shipping.

As long as you have an HD DirecTIVO, they should offer you an upgrade deal.
If you only have the standard DirecTIVO's, they're still supported and DirecTV is under no obligation to upgrade those.

Look at the OP's location. Maybe D* doesn't offer his locals yet in HD. Just a guess.
icr2002 - I had a HDTiVo (HR10) and an old Sony HD200 STB. I called D* and got a very nice CSR in their W. Virginia call center. The call took about 20 minutes and I got a new HR21-700 and a new H21 plus installation of the Slimline 5-LNB dish. No charge. Good luck to you.

Go with the company that meets your needs for programming and gives you the best deal. You can always come back to DirecTV if you don't like the other company and they'll probably give you a sweetheart deal to do so after you have been away for a few months to a year.

They have very crappy audio circuts in them. They all have audio hiss and very low volume when watching on chanel 3 o4. I have tried 3 D10s and they all failed in these areas. I have gotten a credit for the unit and have gone back to my very reliable Hughes GAEBO's.
YOU ARE FORE WARNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The OP has posted numerous posts of the type quoted above, so obviously he has D10 or Hughes units, which DirecTV will probably not exchange for him. I hope he enjoys his switch to cable.

Oh good. Another post from someone threatening to quit DirecTV unless they get something for free. Maybe they should be asking you for some extra money to demonstrate how much you appreciate them for providing you with programmng those 6 years.

Cable TV will likely have a higher per-month cost for each receiver that you get from them .. so in less than a year, you will likely be spending more on the receivers with Cable than you would have with the up-front fee and monthly charges with DIRECTV.

I'd say shop around. My initial set up consisted of a Direct Tivo R10. I called and called and called and none of the CSRs would budge. I did not want to give up Direct TV so I just went to Ebay and saved 55 bucks on an HDDVR and my dish was upgraded to a 5lnb for free. Do I feel that being a 3 year customer, I should have some type of discount while new customers are getting everything for free, maybe, but this isn't a perfect world. If you want it, go get it.

As others have mentioned, you should be able to get free upgrades on the Tivo units as long as your account is in good standing.

If you were getting a new HD DVR which version would you prefer? I have 2 HR20-100's and HR20-700. I don't need OTA!

Although it's happening with some people, I'd say if you're planning on waiting until DirecTV calls you, you might as well schedule that cable installation.
Your chances of getting any kind of upgrade from DirecTV will be exponentially higher if you call them.
If your TiVo units are standard def, I'd say you're reaching WAY too high to expect free HD DVRs in return. Same with a stand alone receiver - if you don't have one now, or you do have one that's a standard def receiver, I wouldn't expect a free HD receiver. And certainly NOT all three of them for free.
And no disrespect intended, but two years, six years or twelve years, I don't think that's a big factor at this point. Their focus is on replacing non-MPEG4 capable HD units for MPEG4 capable HD units. If you're reaching beyond that, I'd put money on you being disappointed with whatever they'd offer.
Good luck.

Could be, it's really not clear what he's all worked up over. If he's worried that the switch to digital in 2009 will affect his DirecTV service, he shouldn't be. His service will continue to work as it presently does well past 2009 - he will still get SD versions of his locals (if they're presently provided) and there are no plans to eliminate any of the current national programming. There are way too many SD only boxes and households for DirecTV to pull the plug anytime soon.

he just wants to get all worked up, get his blood pressure way up, rant and rave, and then have a coronary and die when nothing happens to his programming

Oh, yes I agree.
Last summer when I was tiring of the high cost and recent price increases I went shopping around to DISH and cable. I also dropped Total Choice Plus which I'd had for over 6 years. Someone was definitely awake and noticed.
I got an email with three really nice offers. One for free PPV (2 per month for a year), one for a discount on my monthly bill, and one for a FREE DVR upgrade AND a discount on my bill for a year. That one was just too good to pass up. I liked it so much that 2 months later I added a second DVR (also for free!). Now, I'm up to three of them (with a programming commitment which I never had in the past since I owned everything).
So yes, they are definitely awake... :D
.... you should know its DirecTV. Actually it's DIRECTV.

My comment? "You are the weakest link. Goodbye."
Most of the posts I've mode on this site so far are frustrated rants about me not being able to get locals or being turned down for the DNS waivers, so I understand some of the topic creator's rage, but as far as which is more affordable, at least in my area, Directv offers much better programming than Dish for the same price (Dish doesn't have my locals either). Charter (the only cable choice in my area of Alabama) has the locals of course, but they are also much more expensive with much less HD channels.

This is something I will never under stand. Its not like you're not getting anything in return for the money you pay to D*. Its not like you can go to Walmart for 6 years then one day tell the cashier that your getting free groceries today or you're going to Target. Its a service, like any other. You pay for power every month but would never expect a discount for being a long time customer. Go try it with your 3 year old desktop, threaten to go to dell instead of hp. Even if it is leased equipment by the time you do ever return it to them to go to some inferior service it will be outdated and probably recycled. Be happy they even offer a subsidized 199$ with 2 year commitment instead of forcing everyone to pay what it takes to build one. Go buy some cheese for your wine.

I guess one of the reasons that people try to negotiate discounts with DirecTV (and cable companies) is because DirecTV offers discounts. They advertise discounts, they will give discounts to people who ask, and they offer discounts to people who quit to get them back.
People learn where they can negotiate price (DirecTV, car dealers, consumer electronics stores, insurance company) and where trying is a waste of time (WalMart, grocery store).
By the way, as far as being happy that I can get an HR2x for "a subsidized 199$ with 2 year commitment instead of forcing everyone to pay what it takes to build one", considering that in February DirecTV reported that it costs them $260 to get one, I would rather pay the extra $61 and not have the commitment and own the receiver.

I received an email last week from Directv saying I was eligible for a free hd dvr to replace my last remaining HR10-250 HD Tivo.
I called up directv and the CSR put me on hold and came back asking if I had received a free hd dvr in the past which I had so I told her yes. She said I was not eligible for the free HD DVR offer but she could give me a HD receiver for free non DVR. I told her no thanks since I did not want the basic offer from the website, especially after they had emailed\contacted me.
And to pour salt in an open wounds their telemarketing arm called me the next evening with the same free hd dvr offer (voicemail).
