I noticed this in my "DirecTV Entertainment Guide" e-mail for August a few minutes ago. There will be a free preview of Setanta Sports on channel 615,beginning on 8/16 and ending on 8/18.I looked on DirecTVs site for this info, but didn't see it posted anywhere on there yet.I guess it was just part of the e-mail messages sent out from DirecTV.

I remember that last year they gave a free preview during the opening weekend of the Barclay's Premier League. I like this channel. It is a shame that they don't include it in the sports pack with the other soccer channels.

Thanks for the heads up. If anyone wants to know what all is carried by Setanta, there seems to be a "free preview" pretty much every night at 11pm Eastern. Unfortunately, it's just an hour long promo with no live sports.

they probably wouldn't need to give a free weekend to get customers aware of their product.

Been a subscriber since Day One. Just wish they'd send the SD at 16x9. They do it every now and then by accident. Just as FSC sends Dream Team in 16x9 SD the same.

I can live with hearing the announcers saying, "Tune to channel 408 for this match in Hi-Def" for a while longer. But, it surely would be nice to have the whole visual real estate used for a match.

If they would offer this with fox soccer channel as a soccer pack I would subscribe. But at $27 per month it is just too expensive for both. Some good games that might be on all times british summer time are.

I'm looking forward to seeing this. Sadly, I'll be in upstate New York for a wedding during this weekend. I'll have to TiVo something.

On that note, does either Setana or FSC show Australian Rules Football? I used to record it off FSC, but it's been a while (years).

We're at their mercy right now for their pricing and the horrible PQ.
And I do cringe when I remember it's $180 per year.
I pay it as I'm a football and rugby nut.

But what gets my goat is Setanta's hubris in not giving its subs a break on their PPV matches.
$25 per IRB World Cup match was a disgrace, and part of the blame goes to D*.
E* offered a $199 package for the entire PPV offering - 25 of the 48 matches. D* did not.

Why can't existing Setanta subs get a 50% discount on PPV?
Do they really think a high "home" price protects their "bar" business?

If this channel ever goes HD I'll subscribe to it again. Till then they won't see a dime from me.

I jumped into this thread hoping to see some news about HD but of course I did not -- I too will subscribe as soon as they go HD, but not before!

btw, i sent them an email months ago about HD and they gave the standard response of "we can't afford it based on our subscriber base". i then responded with the 16x9 SD request and all i got was circkets.

to me, if FSC and setanta cant get HD, the minimum they could do is give us a 16x9 SD feed (but i seriously doubt it will happen).

I've contacted them many times, even Shane O'Rorke himself to ask about SD 16x9 feed - however I've never gotten a response other than HD is not in their plans currently.

Not looking for HD, just the 16x9 screen feed that you are carrying for every game, before you smash it into 4x3 and it looks like crap.

$15 a month - you'd think 16x9 wouldn't be too much to ask, it has to be close now as to whether there are more widescreen tvs now than 4x3.

And I bet its even less for their target market. If you can pay an additional fee every month simply for one or two sports, I bet you have a bigger TV than most.

Setanta is expanding this season to other providers, so I think their "market size" excuse will need to be replaced.

They are really dropping the ball on HD. I'd pay $20/month to get AFL, Rugby games in HD.

Just a couple more years left on Setanta/Fox EPL contract I believe. ESPN has already come out and said they want it and are willing to pay for it, especially after the success they had with the Euros.

Even though the four-letter network has become more and more the evil empire the last few years, I would LOVE to see that - make it more accessible, and likely put it in HD. Though I don't know exactly where they'd put the EPL games on Sat, since they already fill ESPN/ESPN2 with wall-to-wall college football from Aug-Nov. If its relegated to ESPN360.com and ESPN Classic, then don't bother buying the rights...

Let's hope not. If it means losing the British commentators who are actually sitting at the ground, and instead having to listen to clueless ESPNites calling it off a TV screen in Bristol, CT, I'll at least have to watch it with the sound down.

It is also very disappointing to me that FSC cannot go HD. I would also buy Setanta if it were HD.

I am assuming in Europe that all these SKY EPL matches are available in HD over there?

Glory, Glory Tottenham Hotspur!

seems to me that ESPN uses euro announcers (on the field) for their CL games . . . am i wrong? or are they euros sitting in a US studio?

Tommy Smyth and Derrek Rae are in Bristol, watching the feed and commentating, except for the Champions League Final. Both are from some part of the British Isles

If ESPN made a play for EPL, would be nice to see them do it right and hire the talent to call the matches in the UK. And I will say that making EPL more widely available would be great for soccer in this country.

I had read somewhere a while ago that ESPN was in talks to but Setanta Sports. I don't know if that would be bad or good. It might mean more EPL games in HD, but they would probably ruin it like they did Classic Sports.

Not to get off topic, does anyone know if there will be coverage of the KHL here in the US? It might be some decent hockey. I wish we could get a channel that covered that and Japaneese baseball and I would be set.

Some games are streamed on Keyhole an online streamer, but the quality isn't the greatest sadly. I don't know of any other way to see them in the States.

Could it be that there is no HD for Setanta, GOL, FSC or FSE because the telecasts originate in countries where the HD standard may be different from ours?
