View Full Version : Is this feasible, or just stupid?
Here's my situation: I have a 501 receiver and an RCA HD TV. Obviously, I'm sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the 921 like a lot of you. But last night I started thinking, What if I got a 6000 and kept my 501? Sure, I would still need the second dish and cable (which I'd need anyway, I believe, to receive HD broadcasting), and I wouldn't be able to record any HD stuff. But it would also be hundreds of dollars cheaper than the 921. And I could have it now!
The RCA has multiple inputs, so I wouldn't think plugging two receivers in would be a problem. But I'm not all that technical, and I'm afraid I might be overlooking some simple reason why it won't work.
So... feasible? Or stupid?!rolling

Nope its a great idea. I do the same thing with my DirecTiVo and Sony HD receiver. Just change sources to view HD or not.

You actually can record the HDTV feed via a regular VCR. A real SVHS VCR will get a pretty nice picture off the HDTV feeds.
When the 921 comes out you can use the 6000 on another TV. I use my 6000s to recieve OTA HDTV signals. I feed it to non HDTVs too to get an increadible locals picture without having LIL from DBS (unlikely in market #142) and cable.
Thanks, guys! It looks like I can at least give this idea some consideration knowing that I don't have my head up my a**. Now I just have to find a good deal on a 6000...
I do a variaton of this also. I have the 508, and use the RCA DTC-100 to recieve over the air HD. If there is something on one of the HD or digital stations available OTA but not on Dish, or if the picture is just better, I can still record it to tape, just not in HD. Not quite as good as recording to the hard drive in HD, but way way cheaper.

I'm in the same fix here. Got an HDTV ,921 on order, but now thats 5 months away or maybe longer.I almost ordered the 6000 yesterday but talked myself out of it.I want to see an HD picture now.Its hard to wait 5 months. Does a regular vcr record HD in widescreen?

There is a further option here.
- Get a 6000 receiver and enjoy HDTV now.
- Then when the 921 come out get a second 6000 which should be cheap then or perhaps the new 211 HD receiver.
- There should be other HD non Dish PVRs out around the time the 921 comes out 6 months plus from now. The current HD VCRs are about $ 500 at discount vendors and dropping. The total price (2nd HD box & HD recorder PVR or VCR) will likely be around or less than a 921 and your HD recorder will not be limited to Dish. HOWEVER if Dish follows the pattern on the 921 set on the 500s & 700s there is no extra monthly charge on these 2 tuner units. Extra extra receivers are billed $5 per month.
Just an other option to consider.
