View Full Version : Phase I (August) HD Locals Launch: Augusta, Chattanooga, Lincoln-Hastings, Rochester

Though I would start a thread specific to those awaiting local HD channels in the following markets for the Phase I August 2008 rollout:

Augusta, GA.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Lincoln-Hastings, Neb.; Rochester, N.Y.

I was hoping we might see these light up before the Olympics 8/8...maybe this Wednesday?

Anyone who might be following these launches feel free to update us on any info you may come across including transponders etc.

The sooner the better for us here in Lincoln. I can't wait!

Just curious - how do the channel numbers in the Guide for locals in HD differ from those in SD?

The HD Channel will show the full call letters for the channel. 4 WDAF for HD, 4 KC 4 for SD. At least this is the way it is for KC locals.

I would assume just like all the other HD channels. You would see a -1 next to the station.

My receiver allows me to hide SD duplicates of HD channels. So for Rochester you would see 8 and 8-1, 10 and 10-1 etc.

For the HD locals coming from D*, there will not be a -1. It will just be the same number as the SD, and if you have your box set to hide SD duplicates, you channel 8 SD will magically become channel 8 HD, same for 10, 13 and 31.

You will have to reset up your SLs from the SD channels to the HD channels.

DirecTV doesn't list the full call letters for SD-LIL channels coming from 101... but DMAs from 110, 119, 72.5, 99, or 103 have the full call letters for their SD-LIL. There may be newer markets on 101 that have the full call letters as well, but most of them do not.

Since three of the above listed markets (Augusta, Chattanooga, and Lincoln-Hastings) are 72.5 markets, and Rochester, NY, is a 119 market, both their SD channels and HD channels would have the full call letters.

So, here in Augusta I will have channel 2 in HD (previously in SD w/ D*) and still 2-1 OTA in HD and 2-2 in SD and 2-3 in SD?

Wouldn't bet a lot of money on your locals being up in time for the Olympics BUT you will still have access to Olympic Coverage: see http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=135115

Actually channel 2 in Augusta for you will be in HD and SD. The box will default to HD first. Most people use a feature in the guide to eliminate SD duplicate channels, but if you wished you could channel up and get the SD version channel 2 also.

In other words, the HD versions for the local channels will work similar to the way the HD versions of national channels work now. You'll have a SD and HD channel on the same number.

If you currently have your box set to show duplicates, it will show:

6 - WJBF (HD)
6 - WJBF (SD)
6-1 - WJBFDT (if you have OTA)

If you have your box set to eliminate SD duplicate channels, your HD version will simply replace your SD version of that network, and the SD version will be eliminated from the guide.

I can't answer the OTA part since I don't have OTA, but the rest is correct. At least that's how my locals work here in L.A. on my HR20 and HR21.

LOL - Thanks for the replies. Looks like it might be one of three different methods for displaying the numbers.

It should be pretty evident when they show up!

I'm just tickled we are finally getting the HD locals. Should be here in time to catch part/most of the Olympics & that's pretty cool.

I'd truly love to know what the deal is with Columbia, SC. I wonder if it's an agreement problem with any of the stations. With all respect to the neighbors, I cannot fathom locals for Augusta, GA and Florence, SC (and to some extent Charleston) without Columbia.

Actually, Wilkes-Barre-Scranton, PA has had local channels since 1/3/2008, but they only had the ABC and Fox stations until today. The CBS and NBC stations were added this morning. Nothing has changed that I am aware of concerning the 44 new markets to be launched.

Yeah not having the main NBC in HD is killing me for the Olympics. I would assume if everything was ready to go for this August grouping they would have rushed to get them lit up.

Maybe tomorrow :)

We must be getting close. I live in Grand Island Nebraska and I don't have local channels because when I moved in March I didn't have the second dish put up because I was told April the HD locals were going to be turned on.

Last night I went to the online guide and recorded the channel 8 news in HD and it worked. It was on my DVR and I was able to watch it. The channel doesn't show up on my DVR guide and I can't select channel 8 and go to it.

Hopefully tomorrow morning they will be turned on. :)

Is that an example? There is no Channel 2 in the Augusta, GA DMA:

6 WJBF ABC
12 WRDW CBS
26 WAGT NBC
54 WFXG FOX

On second thought, maybe you meant 12 since it does have 2 subchannels. 12-2 being MyNetworkTv and 12-3 being the Accuweather channel. Almost a definite you would not get 12-3 via Directv. If you do get 12-2 it would be in SD and would be mapped to a channel # not present in you DMA. I.E. in Dothan, AL, WTVY has CW and MNT subchannels that show up as channels 14 and 35 respecfully on Directv. (Glad none of my locals have 2 or more subchannels!)

Just to verify - I have the same situation. 8, 10, 13 are now in HD. 31 is there but blacked out. I called customer service and they had me do a reset and plus refreshed services, but still the same. They said it's most likely being blacked out by the local provider and they don't know why.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

My locals got turned on today, but I'm having a few problems. Here is the info:

HR20-100CS - everything works fine.

H21-200 - channels 29 & 51 work fine. Channel 5,8,10,17 have a message that says multi switch problem, tried hard & soft reboot, still not working. Has a B-Band Super 2400 for Ka-lo band up converter bbc.

D-11 - Local channels don't show up at all.

Multiswitch - Zinwell wideband 6x8 multi room sw WB68

Any solutions ??

On the Rochester one, it just pisses me off that CSRs are such idiots. I have had D* for over a decade and it is painful to listen to the canned response. Maybe, satelliteracer will read the forum and get someone to fix the bug. I emailed D* and hoped I get a person who can read and think deal with the issue.

I talked to a csr and they had me do a hard reboot and soft reboot and try do the satellite setup all over again. Would I still need to refresh services with my problem ? I'm at work right now so I can't try it. Directv is having a tech come out tomorrow if I can't figure it out first.

Can a D-11 receive locals for the Lincoln Hastings area now since the locals moved to a different satellite now ? I've never had the 72.5 dish.

If you had your locals in SD from 72.5 you will still need a wing dish to receive those. The new ones are only the HD ones.

Do we know when those will be moved off of 72.5 or at least the SD locals replicated on one of the other sats.

There are rumored plans to move everything off the 72.5 but there are quite a bit of locals on there so it might take some time. They are to go to 99 or 103 but this would most likely require new MPEG4 equipment.

No, a D11 is not capable of receiving a signal from the 99 or 103 satellites nor is it capable of decoding a MPEG4 signal. You'll need a MPEG4 receiver such as a H2x or a DVR such as a R22 or HR2x.

That local channels I'm getting now without the 72.5 dish on my HR20-100 are 5,8,10,17,29,51. I'm not at home right now so I'm not sure which ones are actually in HD, but I assume all of them are because what Mertzen said in one of the previous posts.
