Yes - NY and LA (only).

you need to qualify for distants though. Tough to qualify for the other coast if you can receive your locals.

Not true I had no problem getting mine and I have locals. The only one rejected was CBS, which I am having a signal test done for.

If DirecTv cannot offer a WB in your locals package can you get a WB from another city like NY or LA ?

No you cannot. WB and UPN are all on spots.

DirecTV is giving me a hard time about doing signal tests. When they test, do they test for the distant locals? e.g. I live in NY and can get local OTA, but absolutely can't get LA locals OTA.

What do they test for? I was rejected for CBS, FOX and ABC.

What are my next steps?

You can apply for a waiver from your local stations to receive distants. But, if they local station does not want to give you a waiver then you have to prove that you are not served by the local stations. To prove you do not have service you have to prove that at your location you do not receive a grade B level signal with an outdoor dipole antenna.

They test to see if you can get a grade-B signal strength at your location. That means if the a CBS can be received at that strength you will not qualify for CBS distant if the local CBS station does not want to voluntarily give you a waiver.. It might mean that you would have to have a good outside antenna to get the signal, you might even have to get a rotor to point to each of the network affiliates in your area (or even an array of single channel antennas to get them all).

The problem is that you might have to go to a lot of work to get the locals in your area with an antenna, but if you get the signal strength at your location you do not have a choice.

Seriously, dont you think it would be stupid to test for LA locals in NY???? Are you drunk? Any way, they test to see if you can receive your LOCAL channels in your case that would be NY. If the test comes back and says you have good enough signal and dont need distance than that is it and its over.

UPN and WB stations are available from DISH----they are the superstations--- but not DirecTV.

Ya know with PVR/sat combo IRDs becoming so popular the SHIVA law is rapidly becoming obsolete. For the locals to deny waivers due to grade B signal avalibility, a sub still cannot Tivo/PVR a broadcast show if it's only available on a local antenna. This effectively blocks the sub from fully using his sat/PVR combo and thus forces a sub to watch live TV (yuk). I say it's time to revisit the validity of SHIVA given the advances in technology avalable to consumers.

AMEN. Especially relevant is your "advances in technology" statement.

Do you REALLY want Congress to re-visit SHIVA ? We could quite possibly get stuck with an even worse law.

No I'd rather have the laws unfairly stacked towards the financial gain of the cabel TV industry, and never revisit the law out of fear that It may bocome worse for DBS subs ............ Not!

Wadda you think I want ? If the law could be reviewed with the knowledge that 17+ million subs exist and need access to local markets as much as cable subs, then yes, I think it could/would be a move in the right direction.

Doesnt SHIVA need to be renewed or something in a certain year? Like it expries? I thought it did, does it?
