Federal authorities have reportedly confirmed that National Guard troops were deployed to protect the Palo Verde nuclear plant this week after intelligence reports described a possible terrorist plot to attack the facility.

State and federal officials were quick to assert that the nation's largest nuclear plant is virtually impervious because of its structural bulwarks and overwhelming security measures.

Gov. Janet Napolitano did not confirm a direct threat against the nuclear plant when she sent National Guard troops there on Tuesday, saying only that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security had received a number of unspecified threats.
Palo Verde, the nation's largest nuclear plant, has three nuclear generators producing 30 billion kilowatt hours per year. The facility is about 30 miles west of Phoenix
Sucks to be downwind here in Scottsdale. :(

So that's what makes those bumps in the sand glow at night. ;)

I never really thought about where Phoenix got their power till now. That's a lot of watts.

In a way I'm glad the tour doesn't go into the real control room. I'd hate to think about someone sitting on the big red "Blow Up Reactor" button by mistake. :eek2:

A friend of mine works at one of the hydroelectric projects here (dam) and he took me on a tour once and it was suprisingly simple to control the water flow through the dam. :) During the spring run-off season it's common for there to be over a hundred thousand cubic feet of water per second to be flowing through the dams here. That's a lot of water to be sitting on top of and have control over.
