Not really just the occasional rain fade. However when the dish was installed d-10
was not up yet,so it's been up a while.

I got a call tonight as well---I am 99% sure it was legit, but did make me question was it really them for a second or two. I saw nothing wrong with my box, so I told them no need for a truck roll. Kind of wish they would have given us the heads-up that this was something they were doing now that our HR20s are connected to the 'net.

The datastream is one way. Proceed with caution.
Just wondering how they would know if your signal strength was low?

If you are sending reports back via the CEs then they will know. These reports send diagnostics back to DirecTV via the Ethernet connection.

Interesting that they called you - My signal levels for 103c have been pitifully low (under 40 at times) since it went live last September and for 99c they've been non-existent.
Last week, I called D* tech support to have them send someone out to realign my dish.
Imagine how chagrined I was when the tech said that the mount wasn't plumb and that most of the bolts weren't tightened properly. This tech appeared to take his time and my signal readings are now in the 90s for all satellites.
I wonder if I can coerce D* to waive the service charge or some portion of it?

I'm not sure that this is even specific to CE's... I think it may be a standard deal now...

That would only be if you are networked and pressed the right buttons, otherwise the DVR doesn't phone home ET. ;)

The receiver will phone home if connected to a network or phone line... no button pressing necessary Elliott... :p
.... and pressed the right buttons, otherwise the DVR doesn't phone home ....Are you sure about that?

I would also recommend proceeding with caution...If they come over and tune your dish and then offer to give you a free estimate for kitchen remodeling I'd worry..;)

This smells like a revenue-generation scheme to me:
“Yes, Mr. Sub, we wonderful folks here at D* notice your signals are a little low and that may mean you aren’t getting the best quality possible. When would it be convenient for us to send a technician to check your equipment (for the low-low price of $80 plus parts) to ensure your continued enjoyment of the best television in the universe?”
I bet they won’t be proactively calling any PP subs!
