CBS: 'Senior Officials' Think Saddam May Not Have Survived
Thu Mar 20 2003 10:33:00 ET

"I am being told by several senior officials not to take that taped speech Saddam gave last night as proof that he survived the attack," CBS NEWS reporter David Martin said on air.

"They say the evidence that put him in the bunker last night was very reliable, and they are confident that the cruise missiles and bunker-busting bombs that were fired at that bunker last night hit the target. So now, intelligence experts are studying the tape to determine if it is really Saddam, or a body double which he is known to use from time to time. And they are running a computerized voice analysis, comparing that speech with known recordings of Saddam's voice. But that's a process that takes awhile. So we may not have a quick answer."

"There is considerable belief in this government that they may, in fact, have gotten Saddam."

Ah the Drudge Report....

Interesting point though... I doubt the military would want to fight on without him though. Might be a body double, but I'm thinking they would surrender without him around. Bush has said he needs the military in Iraq to help keep order so if the Generals (who aren't up for War Crimes) can stay alive, I'm sure they'd not support the hoax.

Thats kind of what I was thinking too, however just coming close may have got some of his government, and may eventually lead to his government unraveling. Lets all hope and pray that this government falls before it is necessary to bring on the heavy bombing of Baghdad. As I am typing this the news is reporting that the land forces are starting to head toward Baghdad in mass.

I was reading on ABC News (on my wireless phone) this evening that US intelligence has analyzed the video, and they say that it is in fact Saddam. I think that it is indeed him, and several factors are to blame for him looking a bit different:

The glasses
The military uniform
The fact that Saddam is probably really nervous right now
The poor quality of Iraqi TV
The SECAM to NTSC conversion, since Iraq's TV system uses the SECAM (French) standard

If it is SH then I wonder when the video was made? I can't believe it was made before the bombing started mainly because of how bad SH looked. If you're going to make a video beforehand wouldn't you want to look good? Especially for someone as vain as Hussein. Flipping over page after page of hand written notes...and those Harry Caray glasses...ugh, not a good look for the dapper despot. He looked more disheveled and disoriented than I've ever seen him.

Of course, 4 2,000lbs bunker busters loaded with explosives could make anyone a bit shaky. Not to mention the 30+ cruise missiles that were launched. And the idea that someone in his inner circle is out to get him. :D

If we hear no more about if Sadaam is going to make another speech then I would say more than likely he would be dead. Wouldn't we have heard some more things that he has to say by now? It should not be long until we find out somehow or another. He may even act and play out a plot as if he were dead when he isn't to have the war end then turn around and attack us or get things ready big time against us or to attack his own people or something.

He was at a meeting with his military leaders today too. There was only one person missing from the session and it was thought to be new footage. It was on Iraqi TV.

They should be able to figure out where the tape or signal is coming from, either that or they actually killed Sadaam and and the new footage of Sadaam was the double, mroe than likely not though.

They may be able to figure out where the signal is coming from, but that would just tell you where the TV transmitter is located, and nothing more. Sending out any sort of radio signal is going to give away your position.

But it's difficult to pinpoint where the tape is coming from, because Saddam may be sending it via civilian means from his secret location.

I agree. It's much safer and easier to tape the speech then transport it to your son's TV stations for broadcast.
