EchoStar has deployed more than 4 million DISH Network satellite TV set-top boxes throughout the United States that are enabled with OpenTV's interactive television technology, the ITV company said Wednesday.
The new milestone represents 100 percent growth since OpenTV's previous announcement of 2 million set-top box deployments in September 2001. The growth has been achieved through a combination of new shipments and flash downloads via satellite of OpenTV middleware to set-top boxes already deployed in the field, the company said.
"Based upon EchoStar's exceptional progress in deploying advanced satellite TV technology, the company is proving its commitment to offering the latest in interactive television to customers," said James Ackerman, CEO of OpenTV. "EchoStar's scale and technical foundations will enable the company to do many new and exciting things as it continues to lead the acceleration of interactive television in the United States."
