View Full Version : South Dakota ---> Chalie's clue on Retailer Chat

;-)
Retailer chat is on...
about Locals, Charlie said that they will steadily continue to add 1 or 2 new local markets per month
then he let out small clue ( i think he called it "a private clue" (as a Joke - hehe)) - He said something like: "People in South Dakota, get ready! Pretty soon you ll be happy!" - lol
Darkman
03-21-03, 11:42 AM
one more thing to add on the Above matter:
After listening more carefully - i heard Charlie say, not 1 or 2 new locals per month, BUT something like "1 or 2 or maybe even more then 1 or 2 new locals per month" :)

But no mention still of ESPN-HD (GRRR!)
Darkman

No Scott - but INSTEAD they said some Basketball game will be shown in HD soon - hehe
Scott Greczkowski

There was supposed to be a NBA Game in HD every week. ("The NBA HD Game of the Week")
So far we have only had ONE HD game in 8PSK format (and one other HD game and the all start stuff in non 8PSK format)
So far it has not been worth $49 for people to get the 8PSK module to watch the NBA in HD.
Darkman
03-21-03, 12:02 PM
So far - i do not own HD ird (and not even sure when i will or if i ever will) - so, personally, - "i couldn't care less" about HD
lol
Selfish,
Me

Scott - nope - not fer now :)
TNGTony or anyone - what city/cities, town/towns in South Dakota do you think they will add? :)
James_F
03-21-03, 12:16 PM
Well how many cities towns are there? One? :sure:

Looking at Brian27's spot beam map: http://wvjw.info/dbs-beam/echo8.gif
Would suggest that it is the Sioux Falls (Mitchell) DMA #112 that would be added. Although it is not clear that the western section of the DMA would be entirely under the spot.
Other DMAs in SD:
Sioux City #142 only has one county in SD (Union) so probably not Sioux City. The Rapid City DMA #175 is not under the spot (western half of SD) and very small. The same could be said for the Minot-Bismark #155 ND DMA that only has 2 counties in SD.

Sioux Falls it is! That is the one that has been rumored for some time. The Sioux Falls DMA covers a good chunk of South Dakota and parts of Minnesota and Nebraska. I've already added the city as a "coming soon" city in the EKB http://ekb.dbstalk.com/19
They UPN in that city is a low power channel and there is no broadcast WB affiliate.
Keep an eye out for:
KUSD TV 2
Vermillion, SD PBS Coming Soon?
KELO TV 11
Sioux Falls, SD CBS Coming Soon?
KRNE TV 12
Merriman, NE PBS ???
KSFY TV 13
Sioux Falls, SD ABC Coming Soon?
KTTW TV 17
Sioux Falls, SD Fox Coming Soon?
KSMN TV 20
Worthington, MN PBS ???
KAUN TV 36
Sioux Falls, SD PAX ???
KDLT TV 46
Sioux Falls, SD NBC Coming Soon?

Tony - if/when those come to life - would they be listed as spot 7 on your Channel Chart or....?
(If they were on 110 satellite of course :) - Or there is a chance they' d be on 119?)
Mike123abc
03-21-03, 12:56 PM
The spots of E7 dont go up to SD, the nearest one is over OK/KS and the bottom of NE.
Adding locals in South Dakota should be easy. There are only a few real "stations" in the entire state, with repeaters covering the state and adding some "local" content.
TNGTony
03-21-03, 01:06 PM
Yes it will be on 110° spot 7. More than likely transponder 2. On that beam we have
Minneapolis with 8 channels on tp 8
Des Moines and Omaha with 11 channels on tp 10
Cedar Rapids with 5 channels on transponder 2
So using 12 as the max number (though we've seen as many as 13 on a transponder) looks like the 5 channels likely to be carried will fit nicely on tp2 with a couple to spare.
I also see room for maybe one more small market. There would be room for 4 + 2 + 2 channels left on the transponders.

Tony,
Have you heard any new info on locals for Anchorage?
A local retailer told me, "first part of the summer", but they have been saying 30-90 days for over a year now!!
I didn't know Alaska summers had "parts". I think summer falls on a Tuesday this year.

I think there is a WB in SD. KWJB in Sioux Falls and Mitchell is a WB affiliate. I tried there website, but it is down at the moment. I do have an archived version:

AkShark,
Don't get me wrong. I visited Alaska last summer.(albeit just the part south of Glacier Bay. I can't wait to go back. It is truly Gods country up there and you folks are very friendly.

I could be wrong, but I am pretty certain that KWJB is not a real TV station. Rather it is a "Cable Affiliate". I can find no record of a KWBJ other than a listing as a cable channel. 100k watts and other locals listings have no record of any such station.
Looking at 100k watts web site, I don't see any WB affiliates in the entire state of SD! :)
As to Alaska locals, nothing new. Still problems with local channels of ALL FOUR major nets.

You're probably right. I never picked it up on OTA signals on humid summer nights when you can pick up TV and Radio from distant places.

Fresh News:
This just came in from "Non-Mere Mortals" - that South Dakota locals now at Dish's EPG
They are not turned on yet more likely - the screen is black on channels (but made EPG)
Rough EPG location for them 9230 - 9241 (9 channels or so in total)
Sioux Falls ... hehe - looks like Tony's "Keep an eye out for" (above) - was "right on the button" :)

I sent an email to www.keloland.com (KELO-TV) to confirm this. I hope this goes well because we can't get FOX or NBC, and if locals come to DN, we will be able to get em. :)
My Fingers are crossed. :D

Anyone knows when those Sioux Falls, SD locals would be available to Subscribers?
Iny idea/thought about this? (Both - Exact or Approximate information on this is wellcome :))
music_beans
03-22-03, 10:31 AM
My guess is May or June. Please note that this is an approximation, not an actual date. I have not heard on when they will be available, but when they are, i will be SO HAPPY! :)
Darkman
03-22-03, 10:37 AM
No..lol - my guess is more likely - like next month or something, cuz the way Charlie sounded at Retailer Chat, was as if those are going up Next...
and them being uplinked now - makes me Conclude that they will be available to Subscribers very shortly...
Like end Of this Month or sometime Next month...
I was just looking for more precise Date :)
After all Charlie said - that they will be adding 1 or 2 new local markets per month - and nothing else uplinked now but those Sioux Falls ones :)
hey, Music_Beans - just wondering/courious - what IRD model/models do you have for your Dishnetwork?
music_beans
03-22-03, 10:39 AM
DishPro 301. It's great! I love Dish Home.
Darkman
03-22-03, 10:41 AM
music_bean - that's it?
was just wondering if maybe you also had 4000? (cuz i want to know something specific, but if you do not - then never mind) :)
music_beans
03-22-03, 10:47 AM
Yeah. I badly want an DishPVR 921. There is just one HD signal in our areal, and I don't have a HDTV. I wish i did.
Darkman
03-22-03, 10:49 AM
music_beans - do not care about 921 at the moment :)
but specifically - do you have a 4000 IRD (in addition to your 301 or not)?
music_beans
03-22-03, 10:53 AM
No.
Darkman
03-22-03, 10:53 AM

I can get the spotbeam signal from E*8 OK since i checked the signal strength on Spotbeam 2 and it came out as an 83. If we decide to get local nets on Dish, we will be able to get Fox and NBC OK.
BTW, KELO-TV has not replied to my email yet.
TNGTony
03-23-03, 01:06 PM
Mr Beans, If you get a signal of 83 you will be technically able to receive all the Sioux City channels dish has reached retransmission consent with. ABC , CBS, NBC, Fox and PBS channels will be on 110°. ABC out of Pierre and and Aberdeen, PBS out of Minnesota and the Sioux City Pax will be on 148°.
Now, do you QUALIFY for the Sioux City locals? To answer that question, look at the maps I posted on the previous page and see if you live inside the Sioux City DMA.
See ya
Tony
music_beans
03-23-03, 01:08 PM
I do. My county is listed in the blue Sioux Falls DMA.
BTW, Its Sioux Falls, not Sioux City. I am also the one that sent in the website updates for KTTW and KRNE.
TNGTony
03-23-03, 01:37 PM
Owners of the TV stations:
ABC = Raycom Media
CBS = Young Broadcasting
NBC = Red River Broadcast Co
Fox = Independent Communication, Inc.
PBS = South Dakota Public Broadcasting
Pax = Midwest Broadcasting Co
So...if Dish has reached an agreement with the big 5 they will all show up. I also believe that the season why there are two ABC addiliates on the 148° satellite is that this is the only way they could get retransmission concent with Raycom for ALL their stations.
Now the CBS station looks interesting. Dish and Young have had strained relations. We'll soon find out if they have reached an agreement eventhough the two CBS repeaters are not uplinked as the ABC ones are.
Fox is owned by a little company so it could go either way. Some of these rinky-dink companies hold out for more money, some don't.
Same goes for NBC.
And I know that the Pax affiliate must have requested "must carry".
See ya
Tony
music_beans
03-23-03, 01:40 PM
Well, if KELO isn't carried, it does not matter since i recieve it OTA, and i would not qualify to get CBS.
ps: KAUN (PAX) is actaully owned by Rapid Broadcasting inc, the same people who own KNBN (NBC) in Rapid City.
http://www.northpine.com/broadcast/sd/tv.html
BTW, the KSFY and KELO repeaters do indeed have more localized weather and commercials for the area it serves. KELO's Rapid City repeater has different syndicated programming than the other three because some of the stations there air the same stuff Sioux Falls has. (IE: Oprah, Dr. Phil.) Thus, to prevent repeat programs on 2 channels, they put Weakest link and some other stuff in their place.
