Final factory-to-dealer sales of digital television (DTV) products in 2001 totaled 1,459,731 units, according to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).
Total sales for the year, representing more than $2.6 billion, had already surpassed CEA's initial 2001 forecasts of 1.1 million units by November and continued to soar in December.
Of the 1.46 million units sold in 2001, 97,157 units were integrated sets, representing a 1,455 percent increase in integrated set sales over 2000. Additionally, the industry sold 196,564 stand-alone set-top decoder boxes in 2001, an increase of 434 percent over 2000. With final 2001 sales figures now in, CEA reports that the total number of DTV products sold since introduction of the category in 1998 equals 2,498,347, including 361,828 integrated sets and set-top decoders. Based on the confirmed 2001 figures, CEA estimated that 16 percent of the DTV monitors and sets sold since introduction are capable of receiving, decoding and displaying an ATSC digital signal either on their own or are partnered with a set-top box. In 2000, 9 percent of all DTV products sold since introduction had this capability. In 2001, 20 percent had over-the-air reception capability.
CEA projects that 2.1 million DTV products will be sold in 2002, 4 million in 2003, 5.4 million in 2004, 8 million in 2005 and 10.5 million in 2006.
