The past couple months, I've been getting the "searching for signal 771" error, but only on certain channels.

Signal Levels:

101 Tuner 1
1-8 95 95 94 92 94 100 89 100
9-16 92 97 95 100 94 100 94 100
17-24 94 95 94 98 95 100 95 100
25-32 94 100 94 79 96 100 96 100

101 Tuner 2
1-8 72 66 49 54 0 44 0 41
9-16 0 0 0 59 0 87 0 85
17-24 58 86 60 95 60 95 60 95
45-32 56 100 70 73 80 99 83 99

On all other sats, tuner 1 and tuner 2 have equal (good) levels. 101 is the only sat I'm having issues with.

This is on an HR20 with the 5 lnb dish.
Any ideas?

Moisture in the line?

Do you have a switch? Tried swapping lines? Tried another box there ?

How would I check for moisture?
No switch.
Swapping lines at the HR20 gives the same results, still tuner2 with issues.
The only other box I have to test with is a fairly old directivo unit.

Dust off that DTivo.

Damn, signals are good on the DirecTivo....
Guess I'm calling D* this afternoon.

There's a bug in the HR20 such that if you are tuned to an OTA channel and it has sufficient errors receiving (like perhaps in the middle of the night when stations seem to turn down or turn off their digital transmitters), it will put up a 771. The 771 will remain, even if the channel comes back. You have to tune away and back to get it to go away.

Could that be the problem?

Did you also swap BBCs? If that has the same results it might be the box.

yes, bbc's were swapped as well.

You swapped the BBC's and the antenna lines. That does sound like a bad tuner. Just for my mental record keeping, is that an HR20-100 or a -700?

HR20-100
I called in and they're sending me a new receiver. I requested another HR20 so I don't need the extra box for my OTA channels, he said he'd note the request but couldn't guarantee I'd get another HR20.
How much is that OTA box for the HR21 again?:(

$50, but if you ask nicely, you should be able to get it free, since otherwise you would be losing previous functionality. YMMV.

I just recently got the HR21-100 box installed. Gonna be 2 weeks this saturday and ive noticed something very similar on my box. Tuner 2 always seems to be 10-20 points lower than Tuner 1. I even get 771 errors when flipping channels on occasion - but it always says its tuner 2. Switching cables and BBC's does nothing.

Ive seen other people commenting about similar issues. Is it a common problem with the boxes?

That's the second one of those I've seen lately. You should replace it before it gets full of recorded material you can't transfer to a replacement receiver. Don't wait until your 90-day installation warranty expires. 101 spot beams are 4, 12, 18, 20, 26 and 28, so those strengths may be all over the lot. The cut-off signal strength level is 70 on all pertinent tp's, so you know what to say and what not to say.....

Got a HR21-700 as a replacement. I explained my locals aren't offered in HD so I use an antenna and asked why there is no antenna input on the new receiver. I should have my AM-21 in a couple days free of charge.
The only downside is I can't record olympics on NBC for the next few days :(.

Unfortunately, it's a two-step process. A free AM21 is the best you can do. ;)
