According to the 9 day EPG the only thing on them is a few womens FC games. The *new* ESPN ALT channels used to be channels 459 and 461. Dish, please move them back to their orginal location.

From what I'm told ESPN has the Women's NCAA Tournament and is carrying all the games. All 4 alternates will be used eventually. These two channels have actually "moved" from 459 and 461 and been renamed. I also have been led to understand that only the games from your area will be available to AT50 and above subscribers. Games from outside your region are only available to March Madness subscribers and Dish does not have this package available. It's a DirecTV exclusive.
See ya

Is it possible they could use these extra alts to carry the proper game for every area if they pick up more mens tournament games for CBS?

Probably, since they keep breaking in with War coverage. But i also heard that they might move games to TNN or TV land, according to Reuters Interactive News through Dish Home.
If ABC moves Saturday's NHL schedule to ESPN then they could use these channels for the regional coverage as well as the women's basketball games they have listed.
The alternates are for the Women's tournament regionalization. There are 4 games at a time being covered and they are supposed to be available in the home markets of the teams in their entirety while ESPN and/or ESPN 2 do "whiparound" coverage of all of the games.
ESPN will carry only one NHL game if there is a switch and the rest will be returned to the local RSNs in those areas.
Saturday's NHL on ABC Coverage Will Shift To ESPN & Regional
Sports Networks In the Event of ABC News Pre-emption
The NHL on ABC 's Saturday, Mar. 22 coverage (3 p.m.,
ET)--featuring Detroit Red Wings at St. Louis Blues, New York
Rangers at Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks at
Colorado Avalanche--will switch to ESPN and regional sports
networks in the event of live ABC News coverage of the war in
Iraq. If a Saturday pre-emption occurs, ESPN will provide a full
national telecast of the Detroit at St. Louis game, while
Comcast SportsNet in Philadelphia and Madison Square Garden
Network in New York will telecast the Rangers and Flyers match
up. In Chicago, Fox Sports Net will televise the Blackhawks and
Avalanche game as will Fox Sports Net Rocky Mountain in Denver.
In addition, the games will be shown on NHL Center Ice, which is
available on DirecTV, EchoStar and iN Demand.
