I only count 120 .So what does DirecTv count as HD.I did not count the out of market networks in the 300's because not everyone get's them.I did not count my locals because not everyone get's the same amount of locals. So where are the other 10.

It would help to know what you've already taken into account as the 120.

ok, well that still doesn't name the channels you've counted as part of your 120.

The 101 would add one more to your count, but again, a list of your 120 would be helpful, pfueri.

I did a recount and have 119 not 120.If I list all channels on here it would take up alot of space with 119 channels to list

I count 118 full-time high definition channels.

65 National Channels + 20 Full-Time RSNs + 33 Full-Time PPV HD Channels = 118

I don't count ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX/CW locals because not everyone get those thru Directv yet.

I don't count the 16 RSN alternates, nor the 9 part-time RSNs.

I don't count the 5 part-time/special event only HD channels (92-99).

THE REAL COUNT SHOULD BE 85 FULL-TIME HIGH DEFINITION CHANNELS, as PPV HDs should not count in the totals regardless of full-time or part-time status.

Counting all these out of market RSNs, along with the scads of PPVs .... all helps to inflate the total HD numbers. Technically, I guess they can say they have 130, and that they are the HD leader, etc., but playing with the numbers like that makes DirecTV look a lot like the competition that they regularly mock in their advertising.

If more national HD's come to pass, as many speculate, then all will be fine. But if today is the lions share of the HD rollout, then it's a lame one.

Yeah, but DirecTV does count them. They count the 8 national feeds - ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox - both east and west coast versions. To the OP if you want to see what they count, go to their website, under the HD section - that's where I found the list. From what I see, they count:

- National HD channels
- National network feeds
- RSNs
- PPV feeds

Now, whether that adds up to 130 or not is a different story.

And you counted the 101 Channel (T101) twice.

There should be 20 full-time RSNs.

It is just as misleading as cable and dish on the real HD count.Don't take that wrong I am a DirecTv customer since 1995. It was kind of a let down today on the roll out so I just wanted to do a real count just to see if the 130 count was true and I see it is not.

hopefully all of these hd ppv channels mean that Sunday ticket won't affect any normal hd channel on SundaysSunday Ticket will need about 15 HD channels each Sunday. Maybe could reuse some bandwidth but games may run late so to be safe it's probably 15 including the mix channel.

Seems easy now to just put the Sunday Ticket HD channels on the same transponders as the PPV HD channels and just turn off 1-for-1 on Sunday afternoon. Seems like this would work very well ...

Yes but they don't claim to be the #1 in HD like DirecTv does.

Actually they do...

Even so, no matter which consistent counting method one uses (including or not including, PPVs, RSNs, DNSs, VODs, ex), Direct still has the lead 49 to 44). The only thing Dish has more of are the premiums in HD.

Carl Spock
08-14-08, 06:56 PM
You can't. Happy now?

This has been the single wierdest day on this board, bar none, that I have experienced.

EDIT: Let me apologize now, dcowboy7. You ask a good question. The straight answer is simply, you can't. No one can. With a marketing department, the number is all important. 129 soon becomes 130 (which frankly I'm sure will be the case in just a few weeks, which then makes this whole conversation even more bizarre and surreal). Such is advertising. The advertised fuel economy of a new car, which is the highway EPA figure, is never achievable. Weight loss statistics on late night TV ads are for one person in a thousand. Buy this toothpaste and get the pretty girl on screen; she'll love you for your smile. It may not be right but it's the way it is. I won't begrudge DirecTV's marketing department for turning 129 into 130. They beat the gun by just a few weeks. That's more truthful than most advertising agencies.

And this still remains the strangest day on DBSTalk that at least I've ever been part of.

Stop trying to count the HD channels. Its a study in frustration! I do not care one wit about the numbers. What I want is every HD channel that is available and every new one when it becomes available. Now, is that too much to ask for? I don't think so! So, here's what I'm going to do - :bang - and I won't stop until I get my way. It's the only mature thing to do (and it feels so good when I stop). :new_cussi

The sad thing is that in a decade, or so, we're all going to be complaining about the lack of 1440p 3d channels.
