EchoStar is partnering with set-top box maker Thomson Multimedia, best known in satellite TV circles for its work on RCA DirecTV systems, for the manufacture of DISH Network compatible satellite TV receivers.
Production of EchoStar set-top boxes are expected to commence by the middle of this year, Thomson said.
Thomson said it will continue to support its existing satellite TV customers, including DirecTV. In addition, the agreement between the two companies is not contingent on the merger between EchoStar and Hughes Electronics, parent of DirecTV. That deal is awaiting government approval.
Thomson added that future receivers it manufacturers for EchoStar will meet technical requirements that will facilitate the migration to a combined network once the pending merger is approved. Thomson also said it will immediately begin a development program for DISH Network compatible products.
