Anyone here watching the Academy Awards? I plan on taking a peek. It's supposed to be in Hi-Def.

BTW: Please don't turn this into a "The Academy Awards Suck" thread or another Iraqi war thread. This is supposed to be discussion about the show itself and the awards that will be given out.

I'll watch the first 5 minutes (supporting actor, I think),45 mins. later for the other supporting category, and tune in for the last 30-40 mins. for the other big ones.

And yes, it is supposed to be HD.

:righton: Spirted Away takes Oscar for best animated film!

The Oscars seem pretty played down this year. The show is kind of dull actually. Steve Martin seems like he doesn't want to be there.

It is being broadcast for the first time in HDTV. Looks pretty good although not as good as CBS HD.

Bet you Chicago takes best picture.

Could anyone else detect a hint of disgust when Selma announced the best foreign film winner was Germany.

Good thing it wasn't France?

For the first time in my history, I haven't seen one of the nominated pictures, none of of the best actor nominated parts, and only one of the actresses (Diane Lane in Unfaithful). I am quite disappointed in myself. I need to get out more!

The show seems quite somber, but it is a good diversion from war coverage (my wife made me stop watching FNC for a while).

It took 45 minutes after the start of the show for KMGH-DT in Denver (with a mighty 3000 watts of low power) to turn on the HD feed. When they did they had no sound. They finally got it right.

HDTV in Denver is still a joke and full power is years away!

As for representatives from Studio Ghibli:

Miyazaki Not Attending Oscars (2003-03-20 22:46:24)
As previously assumed, Studio Ghibli has stated that Hayao Miyazaki will not be attending the Oscars next week. Miyazaki will be absent due to the need to concentrate on his latest film "Howl's Moving Castle", which is planned for release in summer 2004.

Suzuki Not to Attend Oscars (2003-03-23 03:24:20)
Ghibli has announced that Toshio Suzuki will join a growing list of people cancelling their attendance at this year's Oscars due to the war in the Middle East. Safety concerns related to travelling were cited as the official reason. Suzuki was to attend the Oscars on behalf of Miyazaki and accept the Oscar for Spirited Away should it win.

Could Michael Moore made more of an ass of himself?

I am sure he could and he will. :)

As if yesterday's Spirit Awards wasn't any indication....

It is not possible to over-estimate the ability of Mr. Moore to make himself look foolish.

None of the movies nominated will be of any everlasting value. They will be $4.99 in the VHS bargain bin in a few years.

...but what did it have to do with his movie? I found it to be the inappropriate forum to vent his opinion. Where was the thanks to the crew, the thanks to the parents of the victims of Columbine for access to their stories? Was it the Academy of Motion Picture Awards or the Political Bully Pulpit Awards? He can say what he wants, but to me it was the wrong place and wrong time. YMMV.

I agree with Karl. He didn't thank anyone and took the opportunity to shoot off his mouth. What a waste.

At least it was not a parade of political speech. They should have cut his microphone earlier. They did bring up the music before he was done. He was there to get an award, I am sure he could have found a pack of reporters outside to give whatever opinions he wanted on his own time.

Certainly gave Steve Martin an opportunity that he took advantage of.

The first few winners were predictable but then the thundershocks hit. Kidman beats Moore. Brody beats Lewis (where did THAT come from... I haven't been more shocked since Marisa Tomei won). Polanski wins Best Director, immediately ticking off most of Middle America, especially as the crowd cheers (hmmmm. He drugs and anally rapes a 13 yr. old girl which he pleads no contest to before bailing when the judge hints that he is going to reject the plea bargain.... What do you have to do before Hollywood shuns you?) Chicago wins a bunch as expected, but that was it on the predictability front.

And Eminem wins???!!??? It was the best song musically of the bunch, but I thought his baggage precluded him from winning. Interesting that he didn't bother to show up. Anyone know what the story was there?

This was the worst year ever for movies. I see the ratings show that as well.

Michael Moore is not the man he claims to be. If you do some research on him you will see that the Movie "Roger and Me" was full of edits and false information.

The year is 2004.... the show is the 76th Academy Awards....

And I have just watched "Michael Moore" get crushed for about the 20th time already. Call it a immense evil pleasure. !Devil_lol :uglyhamme
