NPS is a great tool if and only if you take it in the larger context.

I have, I will. I tell them the good with the bad.
I voted 8 but I do have one caveat I have to mention since they don't have Comcast sports NW there are issues seeing ducks and blazers games.

I agree 100%, however, I would make sure that they were 110% prepared for the install with information from here and what I experienced with my install.
DirecTV still subs out the installs in my area to Mid Michigan Microtech. I had a great install, but I've also heard horror stories too.
As long as it fit their needs, I would most definitely recommend it...
I guess that would be my response, but honestly, I don't know anyone that I think it's appropriate for. I recommended it to my sister, and they have it. Outside of them, I can't think of anyone else I know that I'd want to recommend it to. I used to talk them up a lot. But the hardware now seems buggier than it used to be. They seem to be a little more underhanded with things like extending contracts than they used to be. And the price advantage is no longer significant enough advantage to warrant the extra headaches for someone who "just wants tv service". It's a good service for someone who specifically wants the sports content, or wants the widest variety of HD at the highest quality, or who is a bit of a hobbyist with this kind of stuff, and accepts the quirks as part of the challenge. But I just don't know anyone else in those categories.

I said 9... because while I would recommend DIRECTV enthusiastically, it's not for everyone. There are those who would be better served by cable, Dish, or FiOS.
I would, and have, recommended DirecTV to friends. I voted 10, however I also point out to them the various features, costs, potential issues, and let them make their own decision.

I have recommended DirecTV to everyone I know from the very first day I signed up (some 14+ years ago). I can remember calling a buddy of mine in Arizona a couple of hours after hooking my first receiver and telling him that this was 'better then sliced bread'.
To my surprise, he ordered one from the same Rochester, New York Radio Shack I did that same night and had it on his doorstep 2 days later..

I have recommended D* to many people but I agree with Stuart that it isn't for everybody. This is true especially for friends from my area as there are no local channels (HD nor SD) on D*. This is a big negative for many people who do not want to fool with DNS or OTA.

I said 6, I never vote 0 or 10 :D
but I did get my boss to get D..
I said a 9 but only because D* does not offer locals in my town. If they did I would be recommending it to everyone I know.

I would absolutely recommend DirecTv to family & friends.I have been a subscriber since 1999 & I am very happy with it.I have had very few problems with D.And the ones that occured were fixed promptly. My only beetch would be a few missing channels that I would like to see (Travel & missing HBOs in HD).But,I'm not in any hurry. They'll come eventually. So I'll watch something else instead of worrying about it all the time. That's why I gave it a 9 in the poll. It's up from an 7 or 8 a year ago if asked the same question beacause they added dual feeds for EI & CI.

I said 9... because while I would recommend DIRECTV enthusiastically, it's not for everyone. There are those who would be better served by cable, Dish, or FiOS.
For the people I don't like,I would recommend all three of those.;)
I've had Dish,I know Dish.I wouldn't sign up my dieing dog with Dish!(To put it nicely)
;) :D
P.S. This just in.....Dave beats Dish by a mile.
I have in the past and will continue in the future to recommend D* to my friends and family.
I have and do recommend Directv, I give it an 8 though as its not for everyone.
Some people I know it would be a PITA to install without a SWM.
i always recommend directv. we have comcrap cable around here.
I gave this a 9 as I have already recommended it to a neighbor and received the credit on my monthly bill. The only negative is that D* does not carry Cox Sports (CS) in this area to provide us with the Hornets games as Cox Cable does in south Louisiana. Charter Cable, which does carry some Cox materiel, doesn't either. I understand that both are in negotiations with Cox for the Hornets games but nothing yet.

You know, I had a hard time with that. I ended up voting a 3. I thought back to all the recommendations I’ve made and I think I have only done so for D* about 30% of the time. Like Stuart said, D* is not for everyone. In my case, I can deal with the software bugs and dish alignments issues and possible poor service from installers and CSR’s, but if I am truly going to put my name on the line to recommend something, it better be pretty darned good. I don’t want my friends and family coming back to me to bitch and whine because their DVR has to be rebooted once a week or they missed their favorite must-see TV.
One of the other reasons why I don’t always recommend D* is because of the cost. Around here, cable is less expensive, especially when you bundle phone and Internet access. I pay AT&T $100/mo for POTS and DSL, then I pay D* over $150/mo. The same “bundle” with Charter, including VoIP phone and faster Internet would be around $230/mo (actually, $185 for the first year under promotional pricing). It’s kind of hard to recommend to someone to spend an extra $25-$65/mo knowing that they may have to endure ETF’s, crappy installers, uninformed CSR’s, rain fade, buggy DVR’s, etc.
People I know that can appreciate the better overall quality of D*’s service and put up with some of the extra “technology challenges” do get my recommendation, but like I said, it’s only about 3 in 10. Hmm, maybe the real issues is that I just have some dumb friends and family! :eek2:

Around here, it's not for everyone, but it's close.:)
Very poor cable performance and offerings in this area.
To those interested in cable/sat offerings, I recommend it routinely and have never benefited monetarily (no $50 finders fee). I have yet to have anyone tell me that my recommendation was a bum steer. I think somewhere between 10 and 15 in the last year have followed up on D*, and none have come back unhappy. I've had several switch from Dish to D* and all of them have been happy with the switch.
(Although one person, after I warned them either standard cable or SD via D* would look like crap on their 42" HDTV, called me to say he didn't like the PQ and it wasn't equal to what I had shown him). Of course, he ignored everything I said, refused to connect an OTA antenna (which is what I showed him) so he could see real HD, and hadn't bothered to connect his DVD player via Component cables yet. Even this guy finally relented when he connected the OTA antenna and his DVD player....and indicated he would be upgrading to the HD package from D*.

The one and only reason I do not recommend DirecTV to my friends and family is because of the horrible installs. I've only had one good install/tech visit in 5 years of service.
Good point on the installs....I warn everyone that there are often install issues (like showing up or being very late). Fortunately, in this area, the installs are much, much better than what I read about on this forum. They aren't perfect, but the horror stories here are much worse.
I absolutely loved everything about DirecTV for the last 3 years. The only thing that makes it hard to recommend is that both Cable and Dish have HD Locals in our area and we are currently without and not on the schedule. Once NFL ST runs its course this Fall I am going to have to reevaluate.
I voted least likely because I am currently in a very frustrating situation with them where certain provisions of my account are incorrect. Turns out it has been this way for year even though I was told the problem was solved a year ago.
I've been promised an "escalation" by three separate and well-meaning CSRs while nothing whatsoever has been done.
If the situation ever gets solved I'll rethink my recommendation position.
Recommended it to my kiddo in Tulsa and now he has constant 771 problems.
I'll head up there soon, only 100 miles, and troubleshoot to try and determine if it is the slimline, cabling, or HR21.
I would want to be available for troubleshooting help to anyone to whom I recommended the service. It's great for me being technically literate and it's also something of a hobby, but too much can and will go wrong for someone like my old gray-haired Mom. Too hard to troubleshoot problems from 1000 miles away. She had an intermittent bad IR receiver in her STB and it took us way to long to get it resolved. It was only after we tried a bunch of new remotes and my personal HR20-700 experienced the same remote reception problem that we got the box replaced.

DirecTV has some minor issues that should get resolved but other than that it is fine for me. The programming blows every other provider out of the water.
Roughly 87% rate 7 or higher. That's a pretty good referral base. It will be interesting to see if the number holds over the next week or two.
I find it interesting (even given all the caveats in how polls are constructed and interpreted), that a poll I did a year ago showed 85% of all respondents (and there were more than 150 at that time) expressed significant satisfaction with their HR20 series DVRs. This satisfaction was not an end point, but based on current performance and progress so far.
It sure looks better than most devices I see reviewed on amazon.com :)

Honestly, I don't believe my wife even knows we have D*. Whenever someone asks her what TV service we have, she always has to ask me.
I gave it an 8.
There's a guy at work who had Dish because there was no cable in his new subdivision. He had problems with it, so when Brighthouse wired the neighborhood he switched. Unfortunately, he now lumps all satellite providers in the same boat and doesn't understand why I like DirecTV so much.
A couple of other guys at work have DirecTV and like it as much as I do, even the guy who has 4 receivers. Which is one of the reasons I don't give DirecTV a 10--folks who need several receivers think DirecTV is expensive compared to cable.
The other reason is no local PBS in HD.
And then there are the people who abolutely refuse to have a satellite dish on their house. Not much you can do about them.
Other than those three issues, I happily recommend DirecTV.
I have, I will. I tell them the good with the bad.
Same here :)

Then don't have the satellite dish on the house. We don't. My husband felt the same way so he build a pole like platform and the dish is mounted up on it. It is hard to describe exactly what he built, but it works like a charm  Also where we live other people have their satellite dishes installed on metal poles. So it doesn't have to go on the roof at all :)
I voted 10. Indeed I have done so. 2 of those folks have gotten DirecTv. The third person has an LOS issue so I stopped bothering him.
I voted 10 i would always recommend it but i don't think i would accept the 50 bucks because if they didn't like it i would not want them to think i did it for the money.

I agree. They should go back to offering an owner installed package like I bought in 1998. Back it up with installers who do paid installation for those who can't, won't or don't. Sell the gear outright at cost and stop the promotion games.

... and I look at it as the polar opposite of that. For me, DirecTV is way, WAY cheaper than cable.
$4.99/month mirroring fee vs. $15/month for a DVR. Multiply that by the 7 DVRs in my house, and there's not much to talk about.
I don't even pay a DVR fee with DirecTV; I paid the lifetime fee back in January 2001...

Never. :(
Great channel choices. Terrible hardware. Even worse installers and underhanded business practices.
Directv has the greatest sales department in existance, because the overall experience has gone so far downhill in the last five years its sad, and they keep adding subs. Good for them. But they will have to come a long way to ever see any of my money ever again.
I still help friends and relatives with CS and technical issues, just did another reaim for my best friend Monday as a matter of fact because the tech mounted the dish poorly and it sags, and D* wants 75.00 to fix the error. So I get a free frosty beverage and do the reaim.
And from what I read about Dishnetwork its even worse.
There is no good choice anymore. One has to make the decision for themselves, like some have said before me. But if they ask me, I tell them to stay with cable. Analog if possible, its the most reliable in my area.

My mood varies depending upon the service I receive that week, if my picture goes out because of rain/snow, or if my receiver decides to freeze when it's recording something I really wanted to see.
Right now, it's a 9 for me. I'm actually trying to recruit someone right now.

I do the same thing with Cablevision... I think I might have converted someone once, actually.
Full disclosure: I'm a Cablevision Internet & Phone service customer. I just don't have their TV service (you'd have to rip my DirecTV out of my cold, dead hands.)
Anywho, I got a cold call trying to convert me to their iO TV service. The guy noted that I have internet & phone and asked why I wasn't interested in the TV service. I told him I had DirecTV and I was happy. He said, "I'm sure we can beat DirecTV's price. I can offer you ....." and I stopped him in his tracks. I told him I had 7 DVRs in the house, and it doesn't cost me a dime more than it would for regular receivers. I said, "can you beat that?"
His exact words - "no, I can't even come close. Now, how does that work with directv?"
I explained how there's a single $5.99 fee per -account-, not per DVR, and that since I got on the bandwagon so long ago, I purchased a Lifetime subscription for $200 over 7 years ago.
He said "oh, wow, that's a great deal. I'm gonna have to look into that, 'cuz I'm paying a fortune for my DVRs.... thanks for the information!"
I think I may have witnessed a conversion that day!

I voted ‘8’, but that’s only because DirecTV doesn’t currently offer SD or HD local channels in our area. Some people just don’t want the “hassle” of having to switch inputs from satellite to antenna to watch their local channels. When I tell them about the AM-21 add-on, many of them feel like it’s a nickel-and-dime situation due to the extra fifty dollars. We don’t mind the lack of locals via DirecTV in our house, mainly because we can always fall back on the antenna if the dish suffers from rain fade (especially during severe storms). We’ve had a very good experience so far with DirecTV and despite some of the horror stories of the HR-21 we’ve had minimal issues. But for a lot of people the simpler it is, the better it is.
I vote "1" because I, a 10 year+ custmomer gets no loyalty perks.
lol, I am almost right there with you (but I already put in my vote the other day :p )
Kinda unfair for the young ones to get all the perks when the people with 10+ yrs of faithful service get nada!
Not to mention paying over $400 for my first setup, that I installed myself, and only having 3 service calls in 12 yrs!
