Didja know there's an amber indicator light next to each Ethernet port on the HR21? It tells you there's a live connection.

I had connected my HR21 to a bad port on my Netgear FS605 switch, and I never saw that light go on, but I didn't even know about its existence, so I didn't realize what the problem was -- until I moved another cable from my host computer to the HR21, and the light went on for the first time.

I want to make everyone aware of these two indicator lights! The D* CSR who tried to solve my Error 62 issue didn't mention the lights either.

Thanks for the info. Not really new tho. :) But pretty much all network devices will have a "Link" light and and "Actvity" light. Generally speaking.

I also see this being moved out of the CE forum. :D

see now if you had an HR20-700 youd know this already cause you can see the light through the vents at the top

Not new to you, and other cognoscenti, but new to me and to some people at D*. ;)

Beautiful flickering lights....seen 'em for years now out those vents. :D

On the HR21's they did a better job of sticking them in the back outside the view of any vents.

Actually, I think its helpful at times to see the lights, as they show network activity and connectivity.

Yes, I actually cover the lights with electrical tape to minimize their impact on the bedroom.

My wife said the blinking lights were keeping her awake, so the HR21 went into a cabinet. I told her to shut her eyes when she was trying to sleep, but only got a strange look in response. :D

I used a sharpie on the lights on my bedroom units.

Sharpie's not a bad idea but that's awfully permanent. If this is a leased receiver I recommend avoiding permanent marker.

I'm sure glad my HR21's Ethernet indicator lights are small, at the back, and unblinking (afaik). Making them obtrusive was an incredibly bad design decision, IMO. Speculation: A couple of years ago, networking was touch-and-go, and the engineers felt the need to be continually aware of its status.

Yeah, beside the TV's red LED, the H20's blue LEDs, the ReplayTV's blue/red LED, the Apple AirPort Express' green LED, etc., etc, etc...

I have never understood people having issues with LEDs in the bedroom. It's not like you can see it through your eyelids... :)

Seriously, in the bedroom there is one on the TV, the power and resolution on the HR21 ( I do turn the ring off), the UPS for the HR21 has one, the wired smoke detector has one, the CO detector has one, and then there is the lit digital lock on the dresser and i dont have any problems falling asleep
