I presently have a wired network using a Lynksys cable/dsl router and was wanting to add the wireless option using a wireless access point, all of the directions I have read state that the install should be in line of sight off all mobile stations, in a home type environment line of sight is not practical and wanted to know if anyone here has had an experience with this type of setup.
Thanks

Line of sight? Not needed but depending on how you house is laid out, you might have signal problems. I'd say in most home situations, you'd be fine, unless you have a room made of lead. ;)

Thanks, another question came to mind after I posted the question, the device comes with a 6 ft cable, was wondering if there was a max length between the router and the access point, if I could use say 15/20 feet I may be able to obtain the line of sight.

I think it has to be within 100 meters or 328 feet.

I have seen wireless have some problems going through walls, especially exterior (stone for example) walls. Careful placement of the base station can usually take care of the problem. Remember it is a strait shot, if you put it in a room where the signal has to go through exterior walls then back into the house you can have problems.

I used to have mine set up so that my neighbor had access to it also. Trust me you don't need line of site although you will probably get a stronger signal if you do. I can go anywhere in my house and get a signal. They probably say that because the antenna are directional.
I just picked up the new Wireless G router and placed it in the basement (family room) and I have two computers connecting to it from the third floor. Occasionally, I get a disconnect or signal issue but it's pretty rare and well worth the flexibility.
Also, you may want to think about just picking up the Router with Access Point and replacing the existing (or adding to it) instead of just the Access Point. I think the price for an 'Access Point' and 'Router with Access Point' was about the same (at least in Feb when I picked up the Wireless G one) and you didn't lose anything by going the router route.

My first choice was to replace the existing router with one that had access point, but after having conversations with some other friends the thought was that if the access point failed I would have nothing and since I already had a router just add the access point, I have been pondering this for several weeks and every time I decide which way to go something sways that decision. Gonna do something soon I thought I put lan drops where I needed them, but as always they are in the wrong place and I am tired of tripping over long cables.
Thanks

Heck I think Routers with Access Points cost about half as the ones that are just Access Points.....
