I have an old 4700 receiver I would like to use as a second receiver. It has never been activated. It will only lock on to the sat signal for a few seconds at a time then it looses signal. Is this a bad receiver? If it is bad does dish have any trade in/ upgrades that I could take advantage of. The customer rep said there may be some available but refused to tell me any details about them until I was ready to buy. What a way to run a business. Can this receiver be connected to a Dish Pro LNB with out a problem.
First, put the 4700 in the exact same place/hookup as a known correctly operating receiver and see how it does. Second, I don't blame the CSR at all, this is a good business practice. It you are not ready to buy, and they give you an offer, perhaps in another month or two they cannot give the same offer then you would really be mad.

#1 - there are no more 4700's - they were all upgraded to 4900's last year. If you didn't have your 4700 receiving satellite during then, you might as well RMA the thing, because you're not going to get the upgrade now. Dish isn't spooling that software anymore.
#2 - If you want to connect a 4700/4900 to a DishPro LNB, then you need the $69 Legacy-to-Dishpro adapter.
Scopper - I had a different experience with a 4700. It had not been used for a long time and when we had our daughter back from college we hooked it up. After having it turned on we attempted to use it but it would say we were not authorized to view this channel. When we called, the CSR suggested that we need an upgrade download and she said she would have it sent. Shortly after, it did indeed work, and works to this day. I cannont say what she did, but that is what happened. It now says 4900 not 4700. (I'm not in front of it, it might say 4900 upgraded - don't remember.)
With Dish Pro LNBF's you will need a DISH PRO adapter for the 4700/4900 suggested retail $69.00. The DISH PRO 301 receiver has a suggested retail of $99.00 and comes with a 1 year warranty. If you don't need the UHF remote of the 4700 I would suggest spending a little more than the cost of the adapter and getting a new receiver, with warranty.
Sams club has the 301's for $78

Tampa8 - WHEN did this happen ? The whole point here is that Dish has (the last time I heard, anyway) STOPPED sending the 4700 to 4900 upgrade. Consequently, your 4700's are now paperweights, unless you can get Dish to exchange you with a 4900.
This should serve notice to all you people who have that spare receiver "sitting in the closet, just in case" to get them online every once in awhile (you wouldn't need to activate them, just let them see the satellite for about an hour once a month).

So you cannot operate the 4700 under the old software?
Scooper - towards the end of last year.
