Disney responded to statements from EchoStar last week that the satellite TV company may have been forced to raise its rates by as much as $2 if it wanted to keep Disney's ESPN Classic.

According to Reuters, Disney said it asked for an extra 2 cents per subscriber a month for the channel. The increase has been characterized as a 15 percent jump in the rate for the network, the wire service said.

EchoStar dropped ESPN Classic on Jan. 1 when the contract for the channel expired. In response, Disney told the wire service that the rate increase it requested from EchoStar for ESPN Classic would not have required the company to raise rates any more than it had already planned.

EchoStar announced last week that it would raise rates by $1 beginning in March
