CBS KOLN 10
8/31/08
Noticed problem starting at 7:00 pm

video is "stuttering" again and the audio is off about 1 second.

Problem has been during Big Brother, Cold Case, CSI, and Local News and continues.

No issues on 10-1 OTA

Update:

Problem was still occuring on 9/1. No problem from what I could tell on 9/2.

Turned to local news last night 9/3 and problem was back on both HR20 & HR21.

This morning audio was off about 3-4 seconds. Audio was ahead of video.

Am I the only one seeing this? Could there be a problem with my setup? There is no other problems with any other channels other than the known glitches on ESPN. OTA seems fine for this same channel. (KOLN 10)

I answered you on the other thread, but I don't think its your setup since you and I are getting identical problems with HD KOLN thru Direct. I have H20's and an HR20 also, and I'm using the SWM8 for my multiswitch so that I can combine OTA with Direct, and just use one line to each receiver. If we're getting the same problems at the same time, this is obviously a Direct/KOLN transmission problem that I'm sure they'll figure out soon enough. But one of us had better keep posting updates so that Direct can monitor the problems, since they use dbstalk to monitor these things. Looks like its just been you and me lately, lol.

Anyway, tonight CSI looks fine on KOLN 10, so I guess we'll see if it holds...

Well, it us again in Lincoln. Turned over to the news this morning on KOLN (10) and the video stuttering and audio problems are back again for the 5 or 6th time. Problem was fixed for about a week and now is back. Sure hope this gets resolved before the new fall programs start. I may have to switch back to not so reliable OTA. :(

Is anybody else having issues on KHAS (5)? It has been going on for about a month now. Approximately every 20-30 minutes the sound will have this strange clicking echo and then drop for about 4-5 seconds. I've noticed it on Heroes, Chuck, Sunday Night Football, My Name is Earl, & The Office to name a few. Not sure if it just my reciever or if it is the local station.

Again, not sure if this my setup or not, but KHAS is still having audio cut-outs for about 4-5 seconds every 20-30 minutes.

Also on Monday's episode of Heroes at the 20 minute mark all voices were very very muted. You could still hear doors closing, people walking, all the debris flying around, but peoples voices couldn't be heard unless I turned the tv up all the way to 80 and then it was still very quiet. This lasted until the 33 minute mark. Commercials during this time played normally.

I've seen these issues as well, but then again I've had on again off again problems with most all of the HD locals since they started. Looks like these stations are still working out some kinks in this process.

Do you happen to know when us Lincolnites should expect HD Fox?

huskernut - I read that KTVG (Grand Island Fox) should be up sometime in December. They have the equipment and are currently installing it.

I've been having the same issues as everyone else. KOLN is mostly unwatchable due to video stuttering or A/V sync problems.

Does anyone know the status of KHGI out of Kearney?

KOLN Problems are back again. Well they were last night and this morning. I was going to post earlier in hopes it would get fixed for tonight, but I got busy at work. Seems like we get about a week out of each "fix" and then it returns.

Guess I better switch the DVR to OTA tonight.

Anyone using OTA to get 12-1, 12-2, 12-3? Several weeks ago I lost them through the DVR and the TV tuner. I though my antenna got moved, but last week they came back on through the TV tuner with great signal strength. If I change it through the DVR it just has the dreaded searching for signal. Tried resetting many times & running the setup again, but to no avail.

I'm using OTA for 12-1, 12-2 and 12-3. I'm getting 'searching for signal' too, on all my HR20's and H20's, and even my H10 out in the garage. Its usually a strong signal for me, so I'm guessing their transmission is down for awhile for whatever reason.

The web site showed them going full digital and shutting down the analog about 2 weeks ago. I used to be able to get them also, I can't any more. I just did a OTA search from my plasma and nothing is showing, I also can't see 10.1 or 10.2 which were alive last week. My guess they are having issue's. I emailed them a couple weeks back but received no response. They must have looked my name up and found be absent from the doner list.

I think I found out the reason why 12.1 etc is not being received. They might be moving their DTV back to their original VHF channel, from their current UHF channel, after turning off analog broadcast. Sounds like the higher VHF stations (7-13) are having problems broadcasting DTV on their original VHF frequencies, as apparently signal strength is weaker for some reason. Some stations are requesting permission from FCC to increase their broadcast strength.

Here's a blurb from another site discussing it:

"As I noted in eastern Nebraska -- VHF digital = disaster. KUON (dig. 12) is now very difficult to get in Lincoln with an indoor antenna. Even in Gretna, actually closer to the KUON/Lincoln tower than Lincoln is, there was quite a bit of breakup (with a VHF-compatible antenna) when I tested at a family member's house, which is near one of the highest points in the county.

Wonder how long it will take for broadcasters to realize this is a bad idea and re-apply for UHF licenses."

UPDATE: FYI, which is off topic from this thread....With further research on the internet, its being widely reported that broadcasting digital signals in the VHF channels (2-13) is full of problems.

This has affected KUON (12), which was broadcasting their digital on 40 (I think) and now have turned off their analog, and have begun broadcasting digital on VHF 12.

It will probably also affect KLKN and KOLN, which are currently broadcasting their digital on 31 and 25 respectively, and will move their digital broadcast back to 8 and 10 when they turn off their analog. KUON is about 30 miles NE of Lincoln, and KLKN and KOLN are about 30 miles west of Lincoln. I'm not sure what power they are all broadcasting, but if they are all about the same, then I would predict we're going to have similar problems getting OTA KLKN and KOLN when they turn off the analog and move to their original VHF channels.

It appears the problem is that VHF signals are harder to receive via antenna than UHF signals. Needless to say we're all probably going to have to switch some antennas from the UHF type to the VHF type. Ugh.

None of the Omaha stations are going to switch their frequency back to VHF.

This of course relates just to OTA reception, and not to Directv-provided HD locals.

Regarding HD locals from Directv, apparently Fox from Grand Island (KTVG 17) and ABC from Kearney (NTV 13) both have their digital/HD equipment and they're supposed to be up soon, so hopefully that means Directv will soon provide those stations in HD soon as well. (I'm not sure NTV is still a part of the Directv package anymore, since it disappeared from the APG).

Regarding the KOLN problems from Directv, its been pretty solid for me for at least a week. But of course, the real test will be today's Florida/Alabama game - the problem always shows up on the show you want to watch the most....

Solid HD KOLN from Directv today during the Florida/Alabama game. No stuttering or audio/visual sync problems at all.

Interesting, the analog PBS channel 29 from Directv had terrible audio lag for the volleyball game. It was 3-4 seconds behind.

Official explanation of KUON reception problems

http://www.netnebraska.org/about/pdfs/111208_01.pdf

NET's KUON/Lincoln TV Transmitter Back On-Air as Digital Channel 12
LINCOLN, Neb. (Nov. 12, 2008) -- Digital transition work at NET's KUON/Lincoln
transmitter facility was completed on Tuesday, Nov. 11, and NET Television is back as a
digital-only signal at Channel 12. The station shut-down began Nov. 6. Cable and
satellite viewers were not affected. NET's temporary digital channel 40, which remained
on-air during the transition, has now been terminated.
Over-the-air viewers will need to channel-scan their tuners or converter boxes to receive
the new Channel 12 digital signal. NET Television has applied for a power increase for
KUON/Lincoln that would improve signal strength. Call the NET Help Desk at 800-698-
3426 if you have reception problems.
Now that NET Television's analog signal has been permanently replaced by a digital
broadcast signal, KUON/Lincoln viewers who received free, over-the-air television
signals through a rooftop antenna or rabbit ears connected to an analog TV set will not be
able to receive a signal. Viewers will need to: 1) attach a set-top converter box to an
existing TV and antenna; 2) purchase a new DTV or HDTV; or 3) subscribe to a paid
service. For more information about all options, including converter boxes and a federal
coupon program to defray costs, go to netNebraska.org/dtv or call the NET Help Desk,
which can also advise about antenna and reception issues.
All television stations are required by federal law to stop broadcasting in analog as of
Feb. 17, 2009, so the options outlined for viewers currently receiving analog, over-the-air
signals will apply to all television broadcasters after that date. NET's early start date was
necessary to schedule the crews to carry out the necessary work at its towers and
transmitters across the state.
One benefit of the more efficient DTV process is that NET Television viewers of KUON
Digital Channel 12 will be able to receive three digital channels instead of the one analog
channel. In addition to NET1 (and NET-HD for those with high-definition televisions),
digital viewers will also be able to receive NET2/PBS World, with live Nebraska
Unicameral coverage and other national and local news, public affairs, history and
science programs, as well as NET3/Create, which features popular how-to, travel and
lifestyle series.

I’m now getting KUON strong again, go figure. Last night and the past couple weeks, nothing. This morning just goofing around, I ran a scan for digital channels on one of my TV’s, and it was there, with good signal strength. My Directv receivers picked it up too, but there is a glitch. My receivers are now showing two sets of KUON subchannels, one with signal, one without, but unfortunately the “dead” set is being loaded, so still can’t view it from my H20-600’s and HR20-700. But at least its nice seeing KUON available again.
But back on topic, I watched the whole NFL game on KOLN HD from Direct, and it was perfect. Keeping fingers crossed they’ve finally ironed out the bugs for good. Now if we could just get 17 and 29 in HD from Direct, we’ll be all set.

Just read this and tried rescanning the OTA and I also got 12-1 to come back up. 12-2 & -3 didn't come back though. Not really a big deal, don't think I've watched 10 minutes combined on those 2.

I agree - Hopefully KOLN bugs have been fixed. They are carrying the Gator Bowl so, I'm crossing my fingers.

Will try a re-scan on my AM21 also for channel 12 - haven't been able to get it since the conversion.

Go figure, the only time I watch PBS is volleyball and baseball, and the whole volleyball season was a mess due to the digital conversion.

Seems to be the pattern - when Directv first offers one of our locals in HD, we can expect the customary audio-visual sync problems. 5 and 8 had some at first also, 10 was really bad, though now 5, 8 and 10 have seemed pretty solid lately. Hopefully it won't take long to fix this time, though as you say, it ruined volleyball and Big Red Wrap Up this year already. I'd also like to know when 17 Fox will be available - in September (I think) I read a post someplace from the station manager who said they had the equipment, should be installed and running by December.

Does the AM21 allow a manual scan? If so, you might be able to get around the problem. I'm not familiar with the AM21, so I might be wrong on this. But with my H20's, if you setup everything using "Satellite Only", then afterwards run a manual scan for OTA channels, I can get all the subchannels from 12. If, however, you set up the box using "Satellite and Antenna", then you're stuck getting the downloaded data from Directv, which does not work with 12. You can see 12-1, but not 12-2 or 12-3 which give the '771 Searching for signal' message. My HR20, however, does not allow manual scanning for OTA's, so I'm stuck, unable to view 12-2 or 12-3 (which hardly matters because I've watched them maybe three times). This problem is being reported with PBS stations around the country, so maybe Directv just doesn't want us to see the subchannels on PBS or something. Anyway, not sure if this would work for the AM21 or not. Just a thought....

The AM21 does not allow a manual scan - you put in your zip code and it gives you what you *should* be able to see. I did have 12-2 and 12-3 before the transition, so we'll see what happens when I run through the setup again tonight. Don't care much about 12-2 & 3 anyway though.

harsh - are you able to see 12-1, 12-2 and 12-3 with the AM21?

It seems like no one is able to watch KUON since they converted. With my HR20 (which can not manually scan) 12-1, 12-2 and 12-3 (as well as 12-5) all show up in the guide. But you can actually only watch 12-1. The others are not viewable - you get the "771 Searching for signal" message.

As GolfPro was mentioning, you get what Directv gives you. They give you what you should be able to see based on your zip code. But for KUON - as well as many PBS stations across the country, apparently - the data they give you must be corrupt, as no one can actually see all the PBS subchannels.

My theory is that all these PBS stations are converting across the country, and the data from Directv for these channels is somehow corrupt. Or maybe they just don't want us viewing PBS subchannels, which is kinda ironic, since probably not a lot of people care about them, lol.

Just saw that 29 was added and I didn't see the lip sync issues that it was having a couple of weeks ago anymore.

Now if they get Fox added I can get rid of the big ugly antenna.

I agree with you on the Fox issue --- Can't wait for Ch17 in hi-def.

I am also having the same issue on channel 5 - think the only show I watch is Chuck, but it does happen at least once every episode (even DVR'd) - often twice.

Per the avsforum, it was posted that KTVG 17 was broadcasting in HD, but its still at low power. My guess is that once they go full power, then Directv will pick them up.

Also read on avsforum that KHGI out of Kearney was broadcasting ABC HD on 13-1, and Fox HD on 13-2. That seems very odd if true.

Wow, this is interesting. Found this information on avsforum, a link to the information was posted on the 10/11 website briefly (has been removed now). There is talk that 17 is losing their Fox affiliation, and 10/11 will be picking it up. This is similar to the talk I previously posted about 13 (NTV in Kearney) also picking up Fox. Both stations will carry Fox on a subchannel, and supposedly will be in HD. This would explain why recently we've been getting 10.1, 10.2 and a new 10.3 with OTA. Apparently CBS will be 10.1, Fox will be 10.2 and MyTV will be 10.3 (for OTA reception).

Info below says Directv will provide Fox 10/11 on Directv Channel 25.

Hope it comes soon.....

If you don’t have cable or satellite, you’ll find Fox 10/11 on Channel 10.2 or 11.2.
Fox 10/11 is also located on Time Warner Cable Ch. 110, Charter Cable Ch. 17, DirecTV Ch. 25, Cable Nebraska Ch. 10, Galaxy Cable Ch. 55, and Mid States Cable Ch. 58. If you don’t receive Fox 10/11, contact your cable company and ask for it.
What shows are on Fox 10/11?
Check out Fox 10/11’s programming schedule. (http://www.kolnkgin.com/home/misc/11045951.html)
What happened to MyTV?
You can now find MyTV on Channel 10.3 or 11.3. You may need to re-scan the channels on your TV so your digital tuner can locate MyTV’s new channel. What’s the difference between Ch. 10/11 and Fox 10/11?
The digital revolution has made it possible for KOLN/KGIN TV to broadcast many different channels at once, called “multicasting”. Ch. 10/11, a CBS station, is broadcast on channels 10 and 11. Fox 10/11 (a Fox station) and MyTV (a My Network Television station) are broadcast on separate digital channels. While all three of these channels are different, they are all operated by KOLN/KGIN TV.

Definitely would be nice to have an HD Fox on D*. Still have the rabbit ears up to pick up KPTM out of Omaha. I could happily relegate them to emergency backup if this goes live.

I'm a little concerned about the PQ of one channel with 2 HD streams, but supposedly they have new technology which allows them to do it well. Guess time will tell - rumor is this will be launching around the first of February.

I read about KOLN's sister station in Oklahoma City that is already simulcasting CBS HD and Fox HD on different subchannels, and people were posting that the picture quality was fine. This was for OTA reception, of course, but lets hope it works from Directv. I also saw the February 1st launch date - was this the date that Directv launches FOX HD on 25, or just the date KOLN will launch FOX on 10.2 over-the-air?

Confirmation that FOX HD is on the way!!! Check out the station logo graphics...

So, with OTA we'll be able to get both KPTM and FOX 10/11, and hopefully Directv will send us FOX 10/11 on February 1st or thereabouts.

OK, I'm done obsessing over Fox 10/11 now....

Once Directv provides us with Fox 10/11, our local HD lineup will be complete, and I can take down that second dish.

I'm going to keep my OTA antenna up, however. I like the PQ better. And I've put in a lot of time perfecting that damn thing anyway. And I suppose it will be a nice backup if the satellite signal ever gets interrupted by weather. But it will be nice to easily watch locals now thru the D* box, instead of having to change the tv input back and forth.

My guess is we'll see the Fox content on D* 25 once it goes live, but it'll probably be a bit before we get it HD or the guide matches up.

Roger that. My guess is we'll also have three months of audio-vid sync problems on 25 too. If D* 10 KOLN had these chronic problems, and if Fox HD is broadcast from the same station, it'll likely be similar. Let's hope not.

I'll keep my eye on OTA 10.2 to watch for the Fox HD broadcast....

I'm guessing nobody around here watches channel 25 (MyTV). With this Fox10/11 talk, I glanced at the channel the other day. Not only does the guide info list the same stuff that's on channel 10, the channel video/audio was horrible! I don't usually have too many issues with our locals, but the video/audio break up on this channel was constant.

Can't say I watch the channel myself, and if I did, I'd just go OTA, but hopefully this channel will work better if/when they load up Fox.

When I saw the crappy video/audio on Directv 25, I checked the OTA 10.2 and it was fine.

Makes you wonder if KOLN/Directv are fiddling with it in preparation for adding Fox 10/11.

Recent LJS article refuting the Fox 10/11 rumor.

So, KOLN buys a domain, puts up a website, puts up Fox 10/11 graphics and programming, releases an announcement...but it was all just a project? Very interesting....

It's being reported that KTVG 17 Fox is now in HD on Directv. Got home too late after the basketball game, so only Seinfeld is on now in standard def. Can anyone confirm?

So much for the Fox 10/11 rumors....kind of disappointing actually, but at least the five networks are now in HD from Directv.

It might very well be. It seems to be a better picture and in the guide it says FOX television services from KTVGDT-TV. I don't think it had the DT before.

Watching 2 1/2 Men and I can hear another audio track in the background. Sounds like another channel's audio is "bleeding" over verly quietly.

Here is a cached link from Google. The JS says it was an experiment, I don't think so. I think some jumped the gun.

Bingo.

Just read that Directv showing Fox HD on KTVG doesn't mean Fox isn't moving to KOLN. Directv could easily pick up Fox HD on KOLN if it moved there from KTVG.

The rumor stays alive...

Or, if KSNB, the Fox repeater in Superior, goes under, then you could have the same situation with Fox as already exists with ABC: an east and west affiliate for the same network in the same market... ? KTVG would cover the west half, KOLN 10.2 the east half. The problem is that they call it Fox 10/11, and channel 11 would horn in on KTVG.

Seems odd that KTVG would even bother to be carried on DirecTV for such a short time before going off the air... unless they're hoping to stay on DirecTV even after a change to CW or MyN or RTN or whatever network.

My guess is that both KTVG and KSNB will go under together. Then if KOLN/KGIN picked up FOX, the whole market area would be covered.

But you might be right - maybe Directv plans to continue to carry KTVG even if they lose Fox. But there's already a CW station, a MyTV station, and a RTN station, so what is KTVG going to carry if they lose Fox? What's left to carry?

I've read where its not unprecedented for Directv to carry a station that is going off the air, because all they have to do is "flip a switch" to carry the network from another local station. So if that's true, Directv is just trying to provide Fox HD no matter where it comes from. And if the station closes, they just switch it to the new station.

For the last several days, KTVG has been pretty much unwatchable because of stutering, pixelation, and audio drops on both my HR20-700's. Anybody else experiencing problems with this or is it just me?

Hadn't watched KTVG for a while, but checked the first few minutes of Fringe that recorded Tuesday and it seemed fine & a quick check of live broadcast just now seems to be coming in good. Maybe the issued was correct between our posts. Hope this helps.

My receiver is a HR20-100

KOLN is almost unwatchable during the final four. I thought it might be the weather, but the problem seems to be exclusive to KOLN, well at least to the degree it is. The dreaded brrriiiip and audio drop is occuring about every 10-15 minutes today.

KXVO (CW) out of OMAHA(!) is now carried, albeit only in HD version, in the Lincoln market. I think DirecTV was allowed to do this since Pappas owns the CW affils in both Lincoln and Omaha markets, and there is no HD version in the Lincoln market. This is the first instance of a "significantly viewed" out-of-market station appearing in DirecTV LiLs in this part of the country.

KXFL-TV Channel 17 - Channel is really KFXL, but directv lists it as KXFL

Audio is off about 2 seconds. Went back to look at some DVR'd shows and Fringe from 1/13 is off, but Finder from Thursday night audio seems fine.

Posted on their facebook page also, but looks like others have as well since last night with no resolution.

I really dislike this station. There are always issues. Audio and picture are always less than other channels and a lot of times they'll come back from commercial in SD until the next commercial break.
