In the early days of HD OTA, PBS channel 8 was pretty good. I can't say that today.

They do. They even have a subchannel (not that this is a good thing)

Are you confusing digital channels with HD channels? I don't see any info here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KAZT-TV) saying that they are HD.

That's what AVS is saying, that it's still broadcasting in 480i despite having gone all-digital nearly a year ago. I'd check for myself, but I don't have an OTA antenna that can pick them up in extreme northeast Mesa. (I can get three Tucson stations, but no KAZT.)
I'm guessing that the Londens aren't up to putting out the money to convert to HD so soon after the investment to go all-digital (maybe why Hagerty bolted?).

Digital doesn't mean HD, a lot of people are still getting confused by that. All stations after Feb 2009 will be broadcasting in digital, but not all will be HD.
Channel 7 looks bad on D* because its coming off of the 101 satellite and the signal is way over compressed. I hope that TV contract is over soon and they go back to 3 or 61 for local broadcasts, at least they can do HD.

Keep an eye on AZTV's programming over the next couple of days. I've been in contact with one of the engineers over there, and they are working on some things.
On a related note, they have an application in with the FCC to move to a different frequency that isn't being trampled by a high power station. Hopefully we can pull it in OTA and start comparing the signals with the DirecTV feed.

They've had the app to go to 36 in for months now. Given this came so long after the statutory deadline for final frequency selection, and given the confusion that's sure to descend on the FCC as it changes parties in January, I'd be very surprised to see it granted any time soon, if ever.

Good point. If that remains the case, I would certainly hope the Coyotes marketing team recognizes this and responds appropriately during the next negotiation. Of course a good season and a trip to the playoffs sure might help gather some attention from other stations. ;)

Has anyone had a chance to compare the DirecTV SD feed with that from Cox? If so, please post what you observed. For that matter has anyone even been able to see the OTA broadcasts from AZTV? I know they are curious but they don't get much feedback from viewers. I would be willing to compile any observations and pass them along to AZTV. Could be lost cause, but as long as they are the home to some Coyotes games, I am motivated.

7-1 one looks much better (Built in OTA and HR20 OTA) than DirecTV's feed. For some reason, 7-2 on the HR20 gives the serching for signal ever since 7-2 started showing Retro TV. I can get it with my sammy's tuner

I use an antenna for all my locals and they all come in just fine (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, CW, PBS). Using the signal meter I can't get even a hint of a signal for 7-1 so I'm stuck getting this one from D.

Do you have any new info on AZTV going HD ? I emailed them about a month ago, before I saw this thread, and I was encourage to email D* because they needed all the help they could get to get D* to broadcast their HD signal. I forget who it was that responded to me email.

KAZT has gone HD in both Prescott (full power) and Phoenix, and digital only for their Phoenix LP transmitter.

All of them, not just one or two channels, only the HD versions however that i've seen (and others have as well here http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?p=2103990#post2103990 )

Just backing up what Teebeebee said. Every HD Local channel is suffering bad audio glitching and video glitching.
And I've also seen video glitches (not pixelization) on channel 7 (SD) on my R15.
Getting audio burps, full and partial green screens (mostly lower half), partial black screens, pixelization and complete black screens. It has been happenenig every day since last Saturday on the following stations. No particular time, as it happens every few minutes ( 30-40 times an hour). Local OTA is fine.
ABC - KNXV (15)
CBS - KPHO (5)
NBC - KPNX (12)
FOX - KSAZ (10)
IND - KTVK (3)
The problem is really severe in the evening (heat of the day),. 14 straight days above 100 deg. The problem is observed on all 4 HR2xs. All sat broadcasts are mpg4

Someone over at AVS isn't having these issues anymore?
It appears that someone at D* has fixed something since last night. I have been flipping channels since 4:30 this afternoon and not found any of these problems today on Channels 5,10,12,or 15. Only KAET-8 continues to have their ongoing issues, apparently they are beyond hope.
I'm not sure who took care of this, but whoever it was gets my thanks. Let's hope hope these problems don't make a return visit.

I get severe Brrrippps on KAET channel 8 HD programming. I do NOT get these errors on the OTA channel 8.1. I know because I've recorded both DirecTV and OTA versions of the same show. The DirecTV transmissions are almost intolerable there are so many break-ups.

I don't watch the local channels very much, but KAET is definitely the worst of the bunch based on my experience.
At the same time, the local problems reported by me and lots of others recently seem to have gotten better the last few days. My wife said the Wednesday night recording of American Idol was almost perfect, whereas the Tuesday night recording was pretty bad in places.

FOX HD channel is acting up similar to the probs we had in the past few weeks, nothing quite that bad but some brrrip 'n here and there
I sent an email to KAET last weekend about their terrible audio and video problems during the Memorial Day concert from DC. I didn't get a reply, but of course I wasn't them money so I guess they weren't interested in what I had to say.
A friend of mine had D* out about a week ago on a service call related to the audio and video problems on the locals. He fixed a couple of minor things, but he also said that some of the local stations are having problems related to the upcoming digital transition. According to the tech, the problems should go away on June 12. Let's hope he knows what he's talking about.
Got so bad for me that I sent an e-mail in to D*'s "Customer Advocate", got a phone call back from her office the next morning. Spent about 30 minutes on the phone with the guy explaining the problems, which stations, as much detail as I could. Told him about the brrriiippppp message thread here with nearly a thousand messages posted.......
I was told he was turning the issue over to "engineering", nearly right away the problem went away.
Funny how that works......

Hey noone has posted since my last post
Had some insane audio last night on Fox 10 HD, heads up to anyone that can possibly pass that info on!
For the second week in a row I have had audio issues with Fox 10 and their NFL programming. The audio wants to cut out or make a rolling stutter sound and my AV receiver shows that it is losing the Dolby Digital audio signal.

I called PBS 8 several months ago and asked them about the blurps problem with the audio. They said that they knew about it. Here it is several months later and it is still there. It is unwatchable. Looks like I won't be watching Ken Burns Parks series. I still get it a little on the other locals but not near as bad as PBS 8.

I sent them an email a few months ago complaining about the burps and pixelization problems. I did receive a reply stating basically that they were working on it. Of course it's never been solved, so I wrote them another email about three weeks ago. No reply this time. Maybe I insulted them by suggesting that since the other locals seem to have solved most of their problems, why don't they ask for help!

I have written KAET twice and DirecTV once about the breakups and brrrrps that plauge channel 8. It's completely unwatchable. It's been this way since they added the channel to the lineup. The first time I wrote them KAET said they were working with DirecTV to fix the problem. The second time I got no reply. DirecTV of course asked me to reboot my receivers (clueless). What a waste. PBS has some great programming but I don't watch more than 10 minutes of it because it stutters.

Have you guys thought about using an OTA antenna instead?
PBS is the only local that has a major problem, at least as far as the ones I watch the most, and I don't watch PBS enough to justify an antenna for just one station. It would just be nice to be able to watch it when I wanted to.

I'm glad you guys have been able to make contact. I hope KAET fixes their problems, or get DirecTV to fix the problem if that is the case.
Has anyone noticed that KPNX seems to have some sort of static or interference on anything prerecorded? Commercials, Law & Order SVU, and Conan are where I've seen the static (it's usually pretty subtle). I don't see it on the live local news. I see it on all 3 of my HR2X boxes. Can anyone else confirm? It seems to be a problem on KPNX's end so I imagine it's also visible OTA.

I just received this response from PBS 8 regarding the dreaded Brrrrp audio and video stutter which makes some programs almost unwatchable.
"There has been an ongoing issue with Direct TV and their transmission of our HD signal. We have been working with Direct for some time on this but little has changed. The reception has actually improved from the early broadcasts but there are still problems. The standard version does not have the stutter/flutter. Since Direct down-converts the HD signal to broadcast it as the standard feed, Direct is obviously receiving a good quality signal initially. We believe that they probably need to upgrade or change out something in the HD transmission at their end but to date that hasn’t been done.
We know that Cox Cable takes the same over-the-air HD transmission and successfully broadcasts the HD version without any of the distortion that Direct is experiencing. We’ll continue to try to resolve the issue. In general we have found that most of the Direct TV techs are unaware of the discussions that have occurred between our engineers and the Direct TV engineers.
Thank you for your interest and for watching Eight."

Kim

This is a real finger-pointing exercise. Someone inside DirecTV reports that they have explained to PBS Phoenix what the problem is, but that the station is "not co-operating", and that DirecTV is trying to work through the national PBS organization to get the attention of the station to get the problem fixed.
During the second half of the Vikings - Lions came today I started having very bad breakup of the sound. It was coming in via Dolby Digital and it kept breaking up, during programming and commercials both.
It D* spreading its bandwidth too thin during football season and this a result of that? I wonder.

I don't have Dolby Digital, but every game I watch on Fox 10 has a few signal interruptions. Usually the screen goes black for a few seconds, along with an audio burp.
My video was fine all game, but the audio had issues. Strangely enough the signal was fine during the second game, perhaps when D* would have had less strain on their bandwidth with fewer games being broadcast on Sunday Ticket.
If my conspiracy theory is correct and this is a D* problem, couldn't they simply drop a few PPV stations during that first game?

I just received this email from Channel 8. Maybe this will help with the Briiiiiip audio/video interruptions? It seems to have gotten better (but not eliminated) already in the last 6 weeks.
"Reception improvements are on the way …
We apologize for the reception problems we have been experiencing. Recently our microwave receiver failed and we have been running on our lower-power backup system. Unfortunately, the lower power output is most noticeable from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. when the local TV stations are using additional microwave transmissions (incoming and outgoing).
In addition to replacing the microwave receiver, we are in the process of acquiring a fiber-optic link from our downtown location to the transmitters on South Mountain. That will become our primary link and will offer the much-needed improvements.
We thank you for your patience."
