Channel(s) affected ABC HD, FOX HD, NBC HD
Date: 9/3/08
Time: 6PM, 8PM
Description of Issue: Picture freezes up. Pixeling.
Not sure which transponder these channels are on but on SAT 103 (S) transponder 1 is at 30. I just had my system installed yesterday. SWMLINE Dish.
I live in Jacksonville, FL have a HR20-700 with a 5 LNB slimline and have been experiencing audio stutter and pixellation over the past few days but only on local HDs. Any insight anyone can provide would be appreciated.

HD Local channels in Jacksonville have bad pixelation problems and some stuttering with occasional audio stutter too. It's been all weekend long and maybe longer but It's been real irritating because I watch TV on the weekend (football)
I switched to my OTA antenna and the HD picture and sound is perfect!
Non HD broadcast seem ok.
My mom's home also has the HD local channel pixelation problems too so It's got to be Jacksonville Area.
We all have the Directv DVR's.
FYI - I get JAX HD local via Comcast and, although just occasional viewing this
weekend, I've not noticed any probs with any of my six JAX HD channels.
Good luck with yours.

I'm noticing the same issues. Looks like an MPEG4 issue since this doesn't occur OTA.
I am having the same issue. Seems to have just started over the weekend. I live in St. Aug. and have Directv. First the screen pixelates when you are watching live and then, the playback seems to stutter or pause every 5-6 seconds. Really annoying. I have a service call set up but maybe it's a bigger problem and will be fixed by D*?
Also effects playback. The live feed seems fine, but the playback on HR21 stutters and pauses every 5-6 seconds. Only local channels - all others are fine. Was there a software update lately? How do we get them to fix this before the new season starts next week?

We noticed the same thing on FOX watching Fringe last night. We had to keep hitting play to keep the recording going along. We finally gave up and watched it on the Internet. This was on our bedroom HR20 which uses satellite locals. Our living room HR20 uses OTA locals and works fine.
I am seeing the same thing (stuttering and other wierdness). This is on both HR20's.. I thought that it might be CE weirdness, but if this is happening on the national release, it has to be a transmission problem somewhere..

I live off CR210 just south of Jax. I have been having this problem on/off for a couple of weeks, but it has gotten worse the past week or so. HD feeds are unwatchable. I have a call in to have a tech realign the dish on Friday (Sept 19).
I noticed my reception on 103s tp 1 is low (~21). I think that may be where the locals come in. Not sure if directv changed that recently, it would explain the problem.
This happened in june when I first got my HR21 recorder and HD tv. But it went away till now. What's up with that?

Noticed the problem last night when I got home on NBC. I assumed it was just an issue with NBC out of Cleveland due to the weather.
I'll have to watch out for other issues though. Its definitely NOT a signal strength problem at my house though.

Chris, what is your signal strength on 103s tp 1?
Also, whereabouts do you live (generally speaking). I wonder if being out on 210 is somehow the edge of a spot beam.

John
Bartram Springs (Phillips and Racetrack) so very close to 210.
I'm not home to check my signal strength on 103 tp1 but I will when I get home.
I noticed something very interesting last night though - which is why I wasn't concerned. At one point in the Sunday football game they talked about their online services. Well when they did that, you could see the EXACT same signal issues (pixelation) on the computer screen they were showing behind them. Thats why I assumed it was source and not my reception.
But I will check when I get home tonight and post what I am getting.
Chris
P.S. The reason I know its not a signal strength issue is because I worked closely with the installer when they were here to get the signal, wiring, etc. where I wanted it. I had a SWM and they hadn't seen one before so I basically did the install with the guy and we spent 45 minutes on signal alone. That was 8 months ago when I moved here. So it might have shifted or DirecTV might have drifted but I don't think so...

Sounds like you live relatively close. Funny thing, I get great signal on most of the satellites (101, 110, etc). it is just the 103 that is really poor. i tweaked my dish this morning, but no matter what i tried, could not get 103s tp1 above 23. I'd be interested to see what you're getting.
It sounds like the problem that you had last night is much more isolated than what most of us are getting. Really, for me, the HD locals have become unwatchable. they freeze up every 30 seconds or so. it is horrible. I know for sure that CBS and NBC do it. What channel did OSU get their butts kicked the other night? Was that ABC? That game was hard to watch due to reception.
Thanks (and Go Gators).

I've had these problems with my HR20-100 as well since Saturday. I'm currently on the NR, and the problems are not occurring on the OTA antenna I have setup.
I'm not at home at the moment to get my signal strengths but I called yesterday and they said they were fine and I have a call scheduled for next Monday.

Doug, I don't frequent this forum too often, but I am curious, do you work for Directv, or just have a good contact? Either way, many, many thanks for posting. I'll see tonight if the HD issue is gone.
Also out of curiousity, what was the issue? and how did Directv resolve it?
Thanks again!

This is occurring again. Noticed first on on Ch12 WTLV (today show) so I then tried CH30 WAWS (I can pick this one up OTA no issues) same thing. Artifacting (is that a word?), sound popping, the receiver goes in and out of Dolby Digital and the picture actually froze for a few seconds once.

I, too noticed it this morning on the Today show. had to switch to SD. I was hoping it was the cloud cover this morning. I haven't checked anything else (work all day). I'll see tonight during primetime if it is still happening.
I haven't checked my signal strength...I will if i have problems tonight after the kiddos go to bed.

Audio stutter and pixellation are back on all HD locals to the point that as of this writing channel 25 (ABC) has been replaced with a banner from DIRECTV indicating that you should watch the programming on the corresponding national ABC feed which they have turned on. Unfortunately, they haven't turned on all the national feeds until they fix the problem. This is getting really frustrating.

I am experiencing the same problem in the 32225 (Jacksonville, FL) zip code. It was a real struggle to watch the football games last weekend. Then on Monday I reported the problem on the Directv tech forum. Later that evening the problem was corrected. Reception was excellent for about 48 hours, then last night the dreaded pixelation returned. The original problem was reported to be with the Directv local receive facility where the local station broadcasts are received via OTAs then processed prior to transmitting the signals to the Directv uplink facility. Apparently, the first fix was just a band-aid that is no longer working. Here's hoping we all get our original great reception back quickly.
All I know is the better get it fixed by Saturday I don't want to stuck watching Notre Lame and Mich State. One the reasons I came back to DirectV from Dish was for the Jax locals in HD. If is not fixed I am going call and raise hell and try and get them to give me Gameplan so I can watch the Canes.

I haven't noticed any problems the past couple of days.
The service tech came out today and said my dish alignment was perfect. He was aware of the "software" problem with Jacksonville HD locals. Funny that this guy knows about the problem, but customer service reps at directv's 800 number have no clue. Basically, they scheduled him to come out for no reason.
This better not be a problem tomorrow at 3:30 for the football game.

My NBC 12 is out with a banner stating they are aware of the problem. My 12-1 over OTA via the AM-21 is severely dropping out and pixelated, despite the OTA signal strength hovering around 83, with no dropping below 75.
The receiver is the the HR21-700.
I have noticed the white pixelization on the HD locals over the last day or two. It seems to be worse when transistioning to commercials, but sometimes I've seen it in the middle of a scene, as if there is a glitch in the signal.
I am in 32258.

But you are right, this is ridiculous. I just noticed that NBC is out with the message that they are aware of it...blah blah blah. I'm going to record my game on the SD feed, just in case. Yuck!
Also, why doesnt directv have channel 4 in HD? It is available in HD over the air.

I love that the HD worked all summer just fine, but when Football and the Fall TV season starts, everything goes to hell.

So far today everything looks good. Just need to make it through the Florida/Tennessee game. After that my next game is not dependent upon local channels. :)
The gator game was fine on CBS 47 - and later, on as well. Big pixelation problems however on NBC 12. No audio dropping, but serious picture issues during SNL. Any thoughts on how and when they will fix this?

Yeah the ABC feed was fine.
I agree besdes Ch 4 they also need to add 17 the CW I have read on here that some locals markets have that. I have thought about putting a bat wing antenna up to get the CANESville locals (I am only about 25 north of there) but then I would need to get 3 am21's and run more coax or get a swm 8.

Both ABC 25 and NBC 12 have been out intermittently. Sometimes I see the "DirecTV is aware of the problem"and sometimes I see the DirectV screen saying they are aware of the problem and to tune to the appropriate national channel, 80 series for SD and 380 series for HD. I am paying for HD but when I tune the national HD channel I get the 721 Channel not purchased message -- the SD is available. Why does DirectV only provide the SD national to people paying for HD when a local channel is out?
Big time pixelation problems last evening and today on NBC 12. I wish DIRECTV would get this problem fixed across all locals as it's a crap shoot in regard to which channel is unwatchable.

You may need to call D* and get them to come out and dither it or just do it yourself. I am in Southern Columbia County just off US 27 near the Alachua County Line. A lot of installers assume that if they get good signal on the 101 110 & 119's that the 99 & 103 are good that is not the case.

Ugly Betty was pretty bad last night. I can't pick it up OTA so I can't compare to know if it was a source issue or DIRECTV issue. Lots of freezing and breaking up and green blocks.
Presently, I'm getting no audio on channels 12, 25, 30 and 47. Why can't DIRECTV get these audio and pixelation problems fixed once and for all?
Past week, lots of stuttering (video and audio), some minor pixelation. This evening, I notice lots of audio popping, but no video issues at the moment.
I live off SR16/International Golf BLVD, one exit down from 210.

Same here. All HD local channels' video and sound are stuttering badly.
I had recorded the VP debate last night me and the wife just watched it. There were no freeze ups but some pixelizaton I had recorded it on CH 47 (no particular reason all of the media is full of it). It seems like the only time I am having issues is with recorded material.

Still doing the same thing here, also.. Jay Leno is unwatchable due to audio stuttering. I looked at 10:00 PM - every local HD station was experiencing the same problem (audio stuttering). The SD version of the channels (and non-local HD programming) were fine..

I haven't noticed as much pixelation in the last few days, however I am having odd issues. We had the DVR problems on Monday like everyone else and I had to reset twice after the issues were supposedly fixed. I haven't had lock ups on the DVR since. However tonight I set CBS 47 HD to record the 8pm and 8:30pm shows tonight. Both show up in the list as recorded, however when I select play all I have is a black screen, no audio or video. When I switched over to the live 8:30 show in progress, no issues. Seems there are still residual DVR issues going on. I didn't have any issues with the DVR piece prior to Monday. And tonight the 9pm show on local channel 25 in HD has letterbox on the sides.

And tonight the 9pm show on local channel 25 in HD has letterbox on the sides.
I noticed that all of the "HD" shows on ABC 25 were letter boxed. Pushing Daisies, Private Practice ...
I haven't seen any issues of late, either..

It was SD and had audio dropouts. I assumed it was just the local affiliate but now with this thread I guess it's just DirecTV.
I sometimes regret converting to DirecTV.

Same here (and I assume everyone with Directv and Jacksonville HD is seeing the same thing). Does anyone know if this is just Directv or is the OTA broadcast the same (I can't get either channel OTA)?
The other question is - is something being done about this?

I sent an e-mail to three of the managers at Channel 12/25 regarding the loss of full HD and how frustrating it is to their viewing audience. This afternoon I received the following answer from one of the managers:
"We had to go back to SD temporarily to accomodate closed captioning. We are installing new equipment. Thanks for your patience."

Ah, thanks for the update!! I hooked up some rabbit ears, but here on County Rd 210 I don't pick up 12 or 25 unfortunately. For a brief second I did see a picture and it was also letter boxed and I just saw some Comcast users on another forum reporting the same thing, so it's just coincidental that we're had these pixelation issues, audio drop outs and DVR issues all at the same time as our local channel 12 and 25 reverted to SD. What ever happened to communicating to customers when there is a known issue? They should at least post a notice on their website.
EDIT: heh, right after I posted that message I went to the First Coast News website and they now have an alert on the top of their webpage in red saying they have a problem with HD and they are working on it. Would have been great to post that several days ago but better late than never.
When mentioning a web site it would be a good idea to give a link.

How about the people that were trying to watch primetime last week?

The analog signal is still the main money-maker for them.
That will, of course, change in February and I expect that once their digital signals are the only ones, we will be getting the kind of attention this deserves. Hopefully, we might even finally get a 5.1 signal from them.
They also need to work on their tower which was damaged a while ago and affects the reduced signal they put out OTA.
The recent HD issues weren't DirecTV's fault. Actually, the MPEG4 feeds have been quite good until the recent issues with pixellation.

You would think that during the two weeks it took to install the new equipment at channels 12 and 25 they could have solved the audio stuttering and momentary video freezes. Well, since it's been a few days since HD has returned to 12 and 25, figured I would return to report my progress. I'm happy to say that since 12 and 25 have returned to their regularly expected HD format, I have no issues to report. No pixelation, no audio drop outs, etc. My DVR rebooted yesterday, but that was due to some updates with the guide and something about full 1080p movies being available soon.
So rather than always complaining, no issues to report at the moment. Service is good and hopefully the foreseeable future! :D

I am seeing pixelazation on all local HD channels over the last 3 days.
I receive JAX stations via Comcast here in Brunswick.
I watch a lot of network tv and I haven't noticed any significant broadcast anomalies other than the occasional lapse in throwing the HD switch at the start of an HD feed from network. Currently, WJXX, Ch 10 (ABC affiliate) seems to be the First Coast Leader in missing the HD cue.
Overall, I would rate Comcast's retrans of JAX locals as very good.

Pixellation on all locals. This is getting absurd. When is DirecTV going to get their act together and fix once and for all? With the price we're all paying for service, their responsiveness on fixing the problem really sucks!

The problem is that from talking to Directv reps they don't admit to having a problem. It is always assumed by them that we, the customers, have allowed our dish to become misaligned, either that or the local stations are having transmission difficulties. Conversations with the local stations, with one exception a few weeks ago, end up with the finger of guilt being pointed at Directv.
So long as two separate entities are involved in the process, neither wants to admit blame. It is a perfect system for them.
I have had the run around treatment for so long that I have given up. I just take my blood pressure medicine before the weekend games start and try to see as much as I can between video breakups, and audio stuttering.

Watching WAWS (Simpsons, Family Guy, and American Dad) was pretty bad last night. I was watching on a delay so I couldn't flip to antenna to see if it was D* or the network causing the issue.
I too have got to the point of "what's the point". You call D* and they send someone out just to tell you nothing is wrong. It's pretty pointless. Other than the one admission on here that there was an equipment upgrade with D* and then there was an issue with a couple of the locals upgrading their CC equipment so we had to watch everything in non-HD letterbox for a week or two.
Either way you would think that D* could own up or use its contacts/influence to at least find out what the heck is going on. But what do they care we all have contracts I guess.

Make sure you report it to DirectV. The more complaints they receive the more difficult it is for them to ignore the severity of the problem.
Chuck was pretty bad on channel 12.. Also, the Jags game on 47 Sunday was bad. Directv is supposed to monitor these threads, but it would be nice to see an acknowledgment of the issues. Right now it seems nothing is being done.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I have a Terk 32 Off Air Antenna, live in Avondale, and for the most part with Direct TV I get 47-1, and 30-1 pretty well. I also get 25-1 for the most part pretty well, most of the time.
However over the last 6 months 12-1 has gone down hill, 4-1, 4-2 are not possible either. 7-1, 2, 3,4 are great. Yes, i live with lots of trees, but I have the 2nd best antenna at the time they were made, it is a monster and pulls in items from Daytona, and Brunswick, so I think this may just be WJXT and WTLV screwing with me.
Just lost my HD 10-DVR last night after 4 good years, :( , I had to go to Best Buy to purchase a new HR22. So my Universal Remote MX 800 now has to be reprogrammed, and darn the luck, I cannot download the new languages for the HR22, so i may have to get a new remote as well. (I hate the new Direct TV remotes).
I noticed the new HR22 does not have an OTA location for my antenna, so thanks to this board, I can now find an AM-21 to purchase for my OTA and be good for the Feb 2009 conversion. Yeah, that Terk 32 has new life! :D
One more thing, go to the antenna site on the web and search and make sure yours is pointed at the right degrees to the towers, mostly located off of Southside Blvd, in the San Souci neighborhood. That could be part of my problem, silly me, I thought I needed to point them downtown where most of the stations reside, DUH!?

I called DTV concerning this and I was cut off when talking with the first CSR. I called back and told them about the problem. I was asking if there was anyway that they could activate 80-88. (Network HD's for those that don't have local access) I was told this could not be done without a waiver from the FCC and that it usually took 45 days. I told the CSR that's about how long it takes DTV to resolve the pixelation problem. CSR was unable to pull up my account or schedule someone to come out and "fix" the problem because their system was updating. I wonder why, if their CS hours start at 8AM that the system has to update at that time. No Jags game in HD for me.

Pixelation appears to be gone, but now audio is out of sync on all local hd channels.
On the phone with DirecTV right now trouble shooting, found a temp solution to the audio out of sync. CSR told me rewind 30 secs and then go back to live broadcast and it should fix the problem (it didn't).
However, what I did notice is if you rewind for 10 secs and then play without going back to live broadcast the audio is in sync. CSR doesn't seem to understand what I am trying to tell her as I had to explain it several times in many different ways. But on the up side she seems like a real nice motherly type
CSR is working the issue and sending to the techs for action and I just noticed a banner on the ABC 25 HD channel that DTV was aware the channel was not available so I guess they are working the issue.

yeah, it's a 2 pronged glitch as I see it.
a. they're not ready for the DTV transition
b. given the recent and prevalent issues it appears that directTV figures they have full saturation in the Jacksonville market and with everyone being under contract they could care less anymore.

If you are watcing football, the area at the top of the screen with the score/down/distance/etc cannot be seen. Even during the local news, the "4" logo is only half visible at the bottom of the screen.

Well, I only found out by accident. I was checking to see if DirecTV had rolled out PBS to us yet and had to look twice to realize that while that hasn't happened yet, the CW was there!
Since I was able to catch it in time and re-set the series links to the DirecTV feed, I could toggle back and forth last night to compare the OTA with the MPEG4 streams. If there was a difference, I couldn't tell.

I haven't been able to pick up channel 7 since they switched to digital only (and switched their HD frequency to 7 - they used to use 38 for its RF HD broadcasts). This is on a HR20-700 (which doesn't scan for channels - it is dependent on a fixed frequency list). Does any know if Directv has updated its HD frequency list to reflect WJCT's change?

I have been getting on occasion a 771 error message ever since the digital transition on just the local HD (4) network channels. It comes and goes. It is not just me but other people I have asked. Signal strength is in the 90's and the sky is clear. I have had 3 levels of techs come out and none can figure it out. The last test replace the LNB and connectors at the dish and the SWM power supply. That was last week and today it started again.
