The Federal Communications Commission is asking for public comment on DirecTV's efforts to deliver services to Hawaii and Alaska, a sensitive subject for the satellite TV company as well as consumers, retailers and others in each state.

In February, officials with the state of Hawaii filed a petition at the FCC asking for sanctions against DirecTV regarding what they consider lackluster DBS service to the state. And earlier this month Microcom filed requests for a ruling concerning DBS service to Alaska and Hawaii by DirecTV which raise the same issues brought up in the Hawaii petition.

The filings contend that DirecTV is violating the FCC’s DBS geographic service rules by providing lackluster service to Alaska and Hawaii. A DirecTV spokesperson had no formal comment on the action, except to say that the company believes it's in full compliance with FCC rules.

EchoStar wasn't named in the FCC action. The company's DISH Network service provides programming to Alaska residents, and delivers offerings to Hawaii subscribers that include local TV channels.
