Was last night's Swingtown episode not in widescreen? It is usually, but I wonder if something changed?

Swingtown is a show on the CBS broadcast network, so you were likely watching it on your local affiliate. You could have been watching this via an over the air antenna or from DirecTV's feed. Perhaps your local CBS affiliate goofed up, but without more information there's unlikely to be anyone here that can answer your question.

Remember, if it's on ABC, CBS, NBC, the CW or FOX then Directv is sending unique broadcast feeds from local network affiliates into each market city. So what someone sees on CBS in Athens, Georgia will have little or nothing to do with what someone sees on CBS in Zanesville, Ohio.

I am watching it via DirecTV in San Francisco/San Jose market on CBS channel.

Anyone else have it recorded and can confirm they were seeing it not in widescreen but 4:3 mode?

I don't watch the show, but I'm paid to "watch" the show.

I can confirm it was in 16:9 HD in all of Utah.

Local affiliate must have had HD problems and aired the SD version on the HD channel.

It was in 16:9 and HD here in Austin. Earlier this year, though, there was an episode in 4:3 SD, so I e-mailed my affiliate to ask what happened. They told me their HD equipment went down, so they had to use the SD feed for everyone. Same thing probably happened with your affiliate. Just like Phox said.

I think it's safe to say that ALL scripted network television programming is now produced in HD. Any time you see a 4:3 broadcast of a scripted show, it will most likely be a problem on your local station's end.
