DirecTV began its push at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas by introducing new program packages bundled with local channels, additional markets for its local TV effort and a national retail offer.

On the local TV side, DirecTV said it will debut local channel packages in 10 additional markets this year. Hartford, Conn., Las Vegas and Providence, R.I., will be the first three to get locals from DirecTV's expanding local TV slate.

The other markets were not revealed by the satellite TV provider.

The new markets will receive local channels from DirecTV's satellite at the 119 degrees, and will require the use of a multi-satellite capable DirecTV system. At present, all local channels from DirecTV are broadcast from the company's primary orbital slot at 101 degrees.

With the addition of the 10 markets, DirecTV said it will offer local channels in 51 markets, representing more than 67 percent of U.S. television households.

New packages also unveiled by DirecTV Tuesday are split between two offerings: Total Choice Plus, which sells for $35.99 a month or $39.99 with locals; and Total Choice Premier - which comes with premium movie channels, locals and other offerings - will sell for $85.99 a month.

More D locals!

As I said for over a year there is enough space for 100% LIL coverage by a merged operation.

I am sending a letter to my reps, this should be a requirement of a merger approval. The real small markets will bleed red ink but it will be made up by DBS being a better competitor will LIL included in each base package price!
