My settings before I changed anything:
Hide SD channels when HD channels exist.
None of the SD channels displayed for the new Local HDs. When I tuned to any of the channels (via guide or by typing it in (with the dash)) It was coming via OTA. I know this because I've never gotten good reception on my OTA (I'm too cheap to pay for an antenna install) and it keeps pixelating and displaying Searching for signal on off air antenna.
So, Looked in setup and there's no way to set OTA to OFF, so I told it to Reset the OTA antenna settings. Afterwords I rebooted.
Now NO CHANNELS EXIST LOWER THAN 70. No SDs or HDs. My DTivo shows all my SD locals just fine.
I don't want to go through the OTA setup because that would just setup my OTA antenna again....
***UPDATE****
After waiting a bit, the locals came back in, but I had to go into favorites and turn them all on. And they display as 4, 7, 11, and 16 - not 4-1, 7-1, etc. So my question is: will I not get 11-2 (not that I ever watched it but..)

the audio on KARK is having hiccups, anyone else?

All the HD locals are buggy. Audio hiccups and picture frames and blocking.
95+ on my spotbeams so it's definitely in the feed.
Audio glitches & macroblocking all channels.
... will I not get 11-2 (not that I ever watched it but..)NO, you will not get 11-2. DirecTV rarely carries sub channels. You need OTA for those.

I have my DVR setup:
Native: Off
Only use 1080i
But, now when I tune to the new HDs Locals it flips my TV into 480p. When I go to any other station, it goes back to 1080i. As minimal as it might be to some; I don't want the wear and tear on my TV flipping back and forth between modes. Also, it's distracting because it takes longer to change channels when going between modes and the picture/graphics on the screen go all screwy for second until the TV turns off the video and then back on in the new mode. Then I get the TV's pop-up displaying the new mode.
Why can't the DVR pipe out 1080i on every channel like it did on OTA? (I understand it's not adding pixels.) I just want everything to be at 1080i so the TV doesn't need to change modes when I flip channels and play recorded shows.
I tried setting Native: On to see if that would keep the DVR in 1080i mode, but it still goes to 480p when I goto to local HDs.
This may or may not help, but worth checking:
Go into the Setup Menu and select: HDTV > TV Resolutions tab at the top of the screen.
Make sure all resolutions are deselected except 1080i.

Yeah, I already have 1080i as my only valid resolution, but it's still feeding my TV 480p.

Does anyone know if or when PBS HD for LR will be carried by DTV?
PBS-HD is planned for D* subscribers and carriage was announced earlier this year in a press release. When it actually happens is anyone's guess. DirecTV has the satellite capacity, so it must be contractual issues.
In the meantime, you still need an OTA antenna connected to your DTV (Digital Television), to watch PBS-HD on KETS-DT 5. KETS-DT reception is not easy or reliable, but that's AETN's fault for choosing to be on VHF. They were originally assigned UHF channel 47.

Posted this on another forum forgot about this one here. Sorry for the repeat. I have been and continue to have audio problems on KATV 7. Hours upon hours of no sound. On many occasions picture is out of focus. Has anyone here spoken to or written them about this situation. I have written but have not heard from them yet. Good game this weekend to bad it was unwatchable and unheard. Even switched out my HDMI for component thinking that was the problem but obviously it wasn't.

KATV just blows, the management sucks!!! So good luck getting anything done.
while the rest of the big 4 affiliates in LR have a good signal KATV alway looks like a steaming pile of Longhorn sh*t ;)
it's obvious that Dale Nicholson won't spend one red cent to improve anything there :nono2: at 1950s picture in 2008?

Do they even care how many viewers will or have tuned out their station? Obviously not by your response. You happen to know off hand what their local ratings are? I can't remember the last time I actually watched their newscast.
I refuse to watch KATV's newscast. They manage to work more commercials in than the other stations. They even take a commercial break during sports at 10:00. Just give the sporting news. Basically one story on the Razorbacks, then 6-7 commercials, then a story on peewee football. No thanks.

they haven't been worth a crap since the Karen Fuller/Chris Mays days, and that's been what 10 years? :nono2:
About the only stuff I watch on KATV are some ABC college football games, ARSN Hog basketball games and Raycom games

...I have been and continue to have audio problems on KATV 7. Hours upon hours of no sound. On many occasions picture is out of focus...D* receives katv OTA. katv is being broadcast as a sub channel of an Equity station, which has notoriously bad picture quality, due to excessive multicasting. When you take that OTA MPEG2 signal and attempt to decode/re-encode it to MPEG4, then bounce it off a satellite at least a couple of times, you end up with worse junk than you started with. This may not change until katv gets their new channel 22 tower on Shinall Mountain on the air. T
They could run fiber to the D* local receive/uplink facility, but they're too cheap to do that. They did it for comcrap, though.

KATV's problems aside, My contract with Directv is up in 6 months. If they don't have PBS-HD on by then, I'm switching to Comcast. I only watch Networks, espn, tnt/speed (nascar), and PBS. I'm paying lots of money for crap I never watch, and now the local Hd's have as many break ups as ESPN's, and they are missing 3 of the main local channels (pbs,CW,Kwbf). I applaud Directv for getting our locals on, but the quality is horrible. I'd rather just get Comcast and a HD Tivo.

This is a response to an email I sent to James Tidwell at KATV:
-----------------------
I did not understand that you had a satellite feed. At this time the satellite providers have the option of picking up the KATV signal from a Ku satellite feed or the channel 42 off air. Channel 42 carries KATV’s digital feed as a third program. KATV is working to provide the satellite providers with a direct microwave feed but at this time do not have FCC approval to install the microwave. Comcast and AT&T ran a fiber feed to the KATV building at their own expense, which is enormous. Bottom line, the weather will have a tremendous affect on the signal quality the satellite providers receive.

Do u have u verse right now? How is it? My sisiter in law can't get sat at her house becasue of the trees.
katv is temporarily on a shorter tower than the other Shinall stations. So that, plus low power, plus multicasting overload = crappy katv reception, until katv's new tower is completed.
KTHV, ch 11 audio is still way too LOUD
KATV Ch 7 is not in sync again this morning. If you pause it for a bit, then play the delayed broadcast, it will be just about right. Somehing about DirecTV not encoding something from this channel so it will sync when live.
Can't really blame Ch7 for this one as best I can tell.

I know exactly of what you speak sir. I don't even bother stopping at that channel any longer. It is so past frustrating it's not even funny. There must be plenty more subscribers out there that feel the same way. It's obvious KATV could give a rats arse they are losing viewers.
KATV-DT in Little Rock (abc-hd) is still unwatchable on D*.
Horrible picture quality. Herky-jerky motion with missing frames and blurry, non-hd quality. And the sound won't stay in sync. Really bad.

Dancing With the Stars airs on KATV. The picture is horrible & the image cuts out sometimes (pixelates). This is supposed to be broadcast in HD. Anyone know what the deal is? Is it KATV's fault?
It's katv & directv's fault. They shouldn't have added katv to directv until katv's new tower is up and they are broadcasting their own signal, not piggybacking on a two-bit Equity station that doesn't have enough bandwidth to do abc-hd.
Or, they should have run fiber directly to the DirecTV facility on Col. Glenn, like they did for comscat.
It probably won't improve until the end of the year when katv gets their new tower up and running and are broadcasting on their own channel.

...not piggybacking on a two-bit Equity station that doesn't have enough bandwidth to do abc-hd.
They don't have enough bandwidth to do their OWN channel properly, much less add another channel onto it. Well, I suppose they do have enough, but only because they rarely show any true HD content. It usually looks like crap on their channel anyway. Tried watching Cardinals games this year on 42-2 and it just looked like a Lego'ized version of the game.
Or, they should have run fiber directly to the DirecTV facility on Col. Glenn, like they did for comscat.
LOL, and spend money? NAH!!! :)
It probably won't improve until the end of the year when katv gets their new tower up and running and are broadcasting on their own channel.
Try like February of next year probably.......can't help but be pessimistic.
Anyway, I will just put in my experiences of 7 over the past times I have tried to watch it. At times it looks like its coming off a severely underpowered computer where the video will lag, then speed up a little only to lag again. It makes the video a good 1 to 2 seconds behind the audio.
Too bad filing a complaint with the FCC would do next to no good.

For the second week in a row, the wife has been watching Crusoe on NBC (KARK) and the speech disappears on the HD channel. The background sound effects are there (music, waves crashing, etc.) but no speech. When we change to the SD channel the speech is there. Update: Just changed back to HD and the speech is back. Has anybody else noticed this? Is this a local 5.1 audio issue? Two weeks in a row. We do not watch NBC that much, except for Leno, so I do not know if this has been an issue on other programs.
Correction: I have just been informed we do watch NBC (Heroes, Chuck, etc.), but no audio issues on those shows.

I little OT, but I needed to express my dismay and surprise that AETN is shutting down their analog transmission on 02/02/09 and will go back on the air with all digital on 02/18/09, the date on which stations must broadcast only in digital. For about 6 weeks AETN will stop providing content. As a DTV customer, I will lose AETN for 6 weeks. I will miss the News Hour very much.
Are many stations doing this? Why is this necessary?
jangell2
11-09-08, 11:33 PM
Oops. The shutdown date 01/02/09.
... Are many stations doing this? Why is this necessary?Across the country? Yes. OTA will be messy for a while. See:
http://rabbitears.info/dtr.php
The temp shutoff is necessary to replace the DT channel 5 tower with a channel 7 tower. They can't do all of this work with the transmitters operating. And this interruption probably wouldn't have happened if KETS had kept their original UHF channel assignment on ch 47, and if the katv tower hadn't fallen.
DirecTV receives KETS with an OTA antenna, so their signal will be off the air, unless KETS provides a backup feed. Contact KETS/AETN (http://www.aetn.org/pressroom/releases/aetn_announces_interruption_of_service_in_preparat ion_for_digital_transition) for more info.

KATV-HD is up with full bandwidth on Directv now. Enjoy.
As for KETS, they said only ConwayCorp cable has a direct link, so I guess that means when they change over KETS, LR viewers will need to watch PBS on KEMV or KETG if you can get them (I cant) or directly from PBS on AMC21 (which I can).
If KETS was smart, they would make their programming available via streaming video on the internet during the outage...but Im not holding my breath.
KATV-HD is up with full bandwidth on Directv now. Enjoy. Audio & video are both normal now. The direct link between the station and D*'s LRF (http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPage.jsp?assetId=P1400108) seems to have fixed all of KATV-DT's problems on D*.
Hopefully, weather will cooperate and allow KATV to get their new tower on the air on schedule for OTA viewers.

This also happened for the previous two episodes of Life and Heroes. This was not a one time event. Will post a follow up if this occurs on the December 15th airing of Hereos.
Channel affected --------: 4 KARK
Date --------------------: December 15, 2008

Description of Issue ----: Loss of video and audio for about 20 seconds
It happened at 8:56 again last night on Biggest Loser.
Channel affected --------: 4 KARK
Date --------------------: December 17, 2008
Time --------------------: 8:56 PM
Description of Issue ----: Loss of video and audio for about 20 seconds
So what is happening? Anybody? What is KARK doing? I cannot get a signal from Little Rock to see if this is happening OTA.
I sent the following to them via the ArkansasMatters website:
I recently got DirectTV, and there seems to be a recurring issue regarding the KARK HD signal. At 8:56 PM every night I watch (or at that spot when I tape) there is a 20-second loss in your signal. This happens on Heroes, Life, Biggest Loser and 30 Rock at the same time.
This has been noted by several DirectTV users on forums. Other Little Rock Stations are not having this issue. Is this a known issue, and if so, is there a solution being worked on?
Thank you.
I will report if there is a response.
KATV "HD" D* feed is unwatchable. Herky jerky motion and washed out color.
Still no response from KARK (guess I wasn't praising them for breaking into programming every time a cumulus cloud gets within a 1000 mile radius of their radar)
And arxaw, I've noticed the same on KATV. My wife had to turn off one of their shows, and the game last night looked terrible for the first half.

not really a tech issue but I'm sure you've all noticed the overly bright and annoying KATV logo on SD programs on their "HD" channel
honestly is KATV trying to drive away all of their viewers (all 12 of them) ?

I gave up on KATV a long time ago. Its bittorrent for Lost and .... oh wait there isn't anything else on ABC worth watching.
... is KATV trying to drive away all of their viewersIt would appear that way.
You don't need a stupid LOGO to tell it's KATV. The blurry, washed out 4:3 video gives it away.

Those banners are enough to make me not want to watch their programming. I am sure that the others will now follow suit, because all of the LR broadcasters seem bent on lowering the bar as much as possible.
And as a status report from earlier, still no response from KARK on the skipping issue at x:56. You would think that a simple acknowledgment would be in order.
If they don't respond soon, I am going to send them the same thing and seem worried that I might miss out on a thunderstorm watch if this continues.

Little Rock DMA
Sat SD channel 49 - "No need to call us" screen for weeks. Actual channel is analog 20, and guide data is correct. Can someone tune the receiver?
OTA digital 18 (4 subchannels) KTWN Searcy, Ar missing from database. Please add even though they dont send guide data to zap2it. Local weather radar, PBS, and other subchannels need to be able to be tuned on AM21.
OTA digital 26 (26.1) KTVH Hot Springs, Ar. missing from database. Same guide data as KTVN channel 25.1 Little Rock.
OTA KARZ digital channel 44.2 (virtual 42.2) no longer exists. KARZ has only 44.1 (42.1). Has guide data for analog channel 20 KKYK.

I am a satellite retailer in Little Rock, AR. For about 4 weeks now our local hd channels freeze up. Its just on locals (satellite 99) and its not isolated cases it's happening to alot of people. The signal strength is fine, software download doesn't help. I've looked thru the threads here and can't find one on this problem so I figured I'd just create one. It's not just one channel it's all the local affiliates. And it's about every 20-30 minutes the screen will either freeze up completely or just pixelate for about 5 seconds. Sometimes the audio will cut out at the same time and sometimes it will keep playing while the pictures still frozen. Any ideas? Oh and by the way I'm seeing the problem coming from people with swm and non-swm equipment.
John, I opened a thread on the HDDVR forum about this same issue. I noticed the problem on Fox & whatever station broadcasts CSI. When it happens, my picture pixelates the same as it does during rain fade, & the audio sometimes also drops out. I thought I had also seen the problem on Discovery channel but I must be mistaken. Doug has said that he's asked D* to look into the locals in our area for any problems & hopefully they will find something.

If that's the channel CSI is on, then I have the same issue. Last night we watched last week's episode & twice during the show the audio dropped for about a minute.
