Does anyone know if this works for HR20's? Does this run cool enough or should I instead go the Ampec/Western Digital route?

I've been running one on an HR20 for 7 months with no problems.

Great. Thanks for letting me know. I need a new one desperately as I have one maxed out so I will add space to my second HR20.

Is using this hard drive to expand my HR20 storage capacity is as simple as plugging it in to the USB port on the HR20? What happens to the shows I currently have stored on my HR20 internal HD? Thanks in advance!

Yes.

Connect the HD (unpowered) to the DVR. reboot your DVR. While the DVR is "off", turn on power (or plug in) the HD. DVR should recognize it when it finishes rebooting.

They will remain on the internal HD, but as long as you have the external HD connected, you won't have access to them. If you disconnect the external HD, you will have access to them again.

Thanks. That is very helpful. I assume once the HD is connected, all future recordings will be stored on it, and not the internal HD?

Correct.

You'll also have to redo your Series Links, IIRC.

USB? I thought it was eSATA.

NOPE! USB won't work. You will need an eSATA cable and plug it into the eSATA port.

Yikes. That my be too much of a PITA.

Yes, esata, not USB, sorry!

Yep, totally glossed over that little aspect of the question.

Use the eSATA port on the back.

Warranty issue aside, if you are not objected to opening up the case, replacing the internal drive is a piece of cake. I had some issues with the drive externally using the recommended ANTEC MX-1 case with my HR21-100, I had constant freezes and lockups, bit the bullet and cracked the case and put the drive internally, it's been perfect.

This is a great deal for a great Calvary 1TB drive!

I've had mine attached to my HR21-700 for several months now. No problems at all!

Dang, might just jump on that. Just reactivated my HR20 and even though I still have 70% free that is bound to fill up ASAP. Any heat issues with this ?

Just remember that if you have to replace your DVR, your external hard drive will lose ALL data - the external data is specific to the DVR it was recorded from.

This is why I don't use an external drive.

If you are replacing your DVR, you are losing your data regardless. How often does that happen?

Quick question, How much HD can be recorded on a 1TB drive?

Stuart Sweet

My guess would be about 180 hours of HD or 800 hours of SD but that's just off the cuff.

That's probably about right...

Remember, though, the content does matter with MPEG4 encoding. A football game with lots of motion will take up more space per hour than a movie without constant fast motion.

I've had my Cavalry for 4 months and no problems ... athough it does run a bit warm.

I've read that others have had problems with the drive, but none for me.

So the internal drive on the HRx's is a SATA drive? Do you just R&R and it will self-format et al?

I have an HR21-700 with an AM21 and bought the calvary 750 GB drive a few months ago. I was having a lot of issues with slow response on commands like fast forward etc. The issue was really getting bad (I posted to the issue thread for the national release). I decided to try a ANTEC MX-1 combined with a Seagate ST310005N1A1AS-RK 1TB Internal 3.5-Inch SATA 32MB Cache Hard Drive. I have been running this since early August and I now rarely have the issues with the slow response.

The cost at Amazon was $230 so it wasn't a cheap solution but it seems to have helped me with my issue.

I have 2 750 gig ones. I have had one for a year or so with zero problems, and the other about 5 mths with zero problems. My first 1 t is now on it's way. I ordered it from the email Buy.com sends out. GREAT DEAL, just wish I had seen the 8 % coupon
