the U.S Army armored convoy was driving north toward Baghdad. Two soldiers, a grizzled veteran sergeant and a young private were sitting atop one of the vehicles watching for danger. Soon the column slowly approached a group of Iraqi peasants heading in the opposite direction.

Suddenly, an old man in the crowd pulled his arm from beneath his robe, raised his hand, and with a toothy smile and a friendly wave, said "Hey!".

The sergeant returned the wave and said "Hey!" back to the smiling faces below. Then a few more Iraqis waved and said "Hey". Again, the sarge waved and repeated "Hey!" several times more.

As the friendly Iraqis receded behind the column, the young private turned to the sergeant and asked "Sarge, what was all that about?" The sergeant, stifling a grin, said "Son, that was the "Heys" of war.
