I was wondering how much bandwidth DirecTV has? With all the talks about ISP capping how much we can download it just makes me wonder. I would bet they have at least 4 OC192 (10Gigs a sec.) Does anyone know or have any ideas? If you count DOD, billing and web access for them, plus other net overhead they have.

Keep in mind that it is extremely unlikely that all of these functions are at the same physical location. Nor is it likely that some don't run on dedicated connections better suited to the specific traffic.

All I know is that forums.directv.com is agonizingly slow.
DirecTV's net service should be getting faster as soon as Comcast gets to their area with Power Boost :)

I don't know but I can tell you they have a very impressive operation there.
If I recall they were using a large ISP in the Southwest that specialized in media delivery early on. It may have been Limelight Networks.
There are likely multiple pipes and that the demand content uses different routes than the everyday stuff (telling them that your receivers are located at multiple addresses and reporting what you've been watching).

I can state that as a fact. DirecTV has a few servers scattered. Many of them are in So. Cal, others in Colorado, and some in Texas, just to state a few.

I believe you're correct. I doubt they used Akami (everytime I see them I think Ads), and those are the only 2 CDN's I know of. I dont believe they use a CDN anymore, atleast, not for current content, but I may be wrong.

It would make a lot more sense for them to use CDN, content delivery network, type connections than having dedicated servers.

The answer would be different for DOD content versus account maintenance.

Then you have to wonder how much there ISP bill is per month. Cell phone company’s 2nd biggest expense is Telco faculties (T-1 OC3 and so) the first biggest cost is labor.

My HR20-700 over the last week has been contacted by two different IP addresses:
One Address connects every 3 hours. It appears that it is using AT&T in the Los Angeles area
One Address connects every day. It appears that is is using Level 3 in the Los Angeles (Tustin, CA PoP) area every day
When I'm downloading On Demand Content, the address that my HR20 connects to uses Limelight Networks. From my house in Rhode Island, my traffic hits Limelight at one of their NYC PoPs.
