See Newbie Dish 500 Install (http://ekb.dbstalk.com/10) at the EKB.
I have a dish and if I set it up at the azimuth and elevation my receiver tells me It just searching for signal and if i go to the signal strength meter it says signal strength 0 and it is like it doesn't realize it is pointed at the satellite. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? By the way it is a standard 18" dish hooked up to a 301 receiver. Thanks.

Well start with the obvious. Tell us about the cable from the 301 to the dish. Is it direct? Can't have any splitters. How long is cable? Is the post perfectly plumb? You can't have any obstacles in the path to the sat. No trees etc. Tell us what you have done.

The cable is 100 ft RG-6. It is direct to the receiver.

OK but is the pipe plumb? Are we using the elevation for a dish 300 setting or dish 500 setting? Are you looking under any obstructions such as trees?
Pipe was plumb I was using it for a Dish 300 and I dont think the trees should affect it.

The AZ/EL settings get you close but not "spot on." Finding a sat with a dish is a bit like finding a star while looking thru a straw.
Once you have the dish set up w/the AZ/EL set on a plumb foot you need to slightly loosen the bolts and very slowly rotate the dish a degree or so at at time in either direction while allowing the meter to "catch up" with each little movement until it detects the sat you want. Then you do the same thing up & down and then back & forth again ever so slightly until you peak the signal strength.
Of cource it's easier with a hand held meter plugged directly into the LNB. But if you have someone to help you by watching the PD&S screen on the TV you can get it done. Just go slow & be patient!

Wait you siad earlier that it is a standard 18 inch dish now oyu say it had been a dish 300. If you are upgrading to dish 500 the simlest thing to do is place your dish 300 LNB in the 500 in the 119 spot. Tweak for max signal then replace the lnb with a twin or if you are using dual lnbs place the other lnb and switch and check switch
Well it is a standard 18" dish that is supposed to be identical to the Dish 300.

Well the obvious question is why are you replacing the other dish?
