Obviously this only came about because someone on the other side is passing information on to the good guys. It will be interesting to hear the full details of how this happened once it is all over. :)

Her story will probably be made into a tv movie pretty quickly. Attractive woman, girl next door type, life and death situation, special forces rescue. Her entire community rallied behind her family, happy ending... Tear Jerker guaranteed.

I hope she becomes the school teacher that she wanted to be (one of the reasons she joined army was to get college money to become school teacher) The world is probably a better place with someone like this. I hope she has no permanent physical injury from her wounds.

We all needed this!!!

They said on Fox News a while ago that they're also hearing that the Delta force found the bodies of 9 dead Americans when rescuing her...

I have a gut feeling the American public will not like what we learn about how these Americans died. And perhaps being a Woman is the only thing that kept PFc Lynch alive.

From the BBC News:

"Gun shot wounds

Private Lynch has two broken legs, a broken arm and multiple gunshot wounds, but she is said to be in a stable condition. "

Jeeze, she will have to spend months out of commission. Hope she gets to at least recooperate at home asap (better to be surrounded by friends and family than sitting in a hospital)

Broken arms and legs are typical of aircrews that eject from aircraft, but a ground crew captured with wounds like that can only be torture.

This is a tremendous morale booster for the troops. I can't even express the elation we felt when one of our own would came back from MIA status in Nam. It gives the fightiing force a shot of adrenaline and an even greater will to prevail.

From Fox News website:

The Washington Post reported Thursday that the 19-year-old Army supply clerk shot several Iraqi soldiers during the March 23 ambush that resulted in her capture. She kept firing even after she had several gunshot wounds, finally running out of ammunition, the newspaper said, citing unidentified U.S. officials.

"She was fighting to the death," the Post quoted an official as saying. "She did not want to be taken alive."

That is one brave girl. And one hell of a soldier.

Welcome back Jessica!

How soon until the White House visit and whatever medal they are going to give her to go with the purple heart? Not for being a POW, but for fighting valiantly until she ran out of ammo without panicking, knowing full well that she was probably going to die when she did run out of ammo.

A role model for women everywhere who have been saying for years that women have the guts necessary to get the job done as soldiers. Her actions probably won over a few staunch oldtimers who sniffed for years that women did not have the right stuff.

And she did it all at the ripe old age of 19. I'm embarassed to say that all I had accomplished at that age was college assignments and the ability to hold my liquor.

She is eligible for the Bronze Star, if not the Silver Star for bravery in combat. The Purple Heart is automatic for her, but either of the Stars are by application and recommendation by her commander.

Women are proving their worth in combat zones, even if they are still not allowed in actual combat units.

Her father has talked to her and the doctors and they say she doesn't have any gunshot wounds. Broken arm, both legs broke, and they did surgery on her back today to realign some discs and such.

Doesn't there need to be corroborating eye witness account of the actions, it seems that all here team is either a POW or MIA (Some KIA). That might make it hard to determine what metal to give her???

She has some major recovery time ahead of her. Accident based broken bones are bad enough, but bullet induced broken bones are probably much harder to deal with. If she didn't have enough character before, just recovering probably will give her more.

Errata: It looks like she didn't have bullet wounds according to the link above

I think her father mentioned that she liked that she had a pink colored cast, can't take the Girl out of the Soldier :D

I'm willing to bet that Hollywood tries to make a spectacle out of her, as trying to cast her in a movie. I hope she dosen't do that and she accepts whatever scholarships come her way (I'm sure many schools will be fighting to have her attend) and she becomes that school teacher she wanted to be and that just starts a long and happy life.

I heard that she is actually going to be interviewed tomorrow at 5:00AM ET. I think this is a PVR event and have set mine accordingly. I heard this on Fox News, but suspect it will be carried by all news services.

She did not have any stab or gunshot wounds. She had no feeling in her legs or feet her father says after talking to her on phone. Her parents talked to her before and after surgery and said she is strong and is doing great but it will take time. They decided not to go to Germany to visit her in which is where she is at receiving surgery. She already has undergone one surgery and will have more to come. She has metal plates in her back to realign disks in her back.

She only lives 20 miles from me, is very good looking, and close to my age.

Lol, she might be after all that training but why would she?

I am proud of her thought for what she has done for this country and for how she fought at the last moment with all her might and the last bullets she had left for our country, someone so close to me as well. I wish her a speedy recovery.

Bob Wise, the governor, has made sure she has her college education paid and the school that she had attended says there is a job waiting for her after college to become a school teacher, in which is what she wants to be.

Great story Richard, below is another one from the Washington Post.

I also saw some TV coverage on this story that he walked 6 miles 3 times going back and forth between the hospital and US soldiers in order to provide and gather information.

I have a feeling the way this story is being played he may wind up dead in some reprisal. The military should take him and his family an bring them over to the US and put them in the witness protection bureau. His wife is a nurse, we can use her here with the nursing shortage...

Her Purple Heart is pretty much a given even though she may have not suffered bullet or knife wounds. The fact that she had battlefield injuries and was a POW fit the qualifications for the PH. Only proven gross negligence on her part would disqualify the award. I doubt very much if anyone even wants to raise THAT issue in this case.

There need not be direct corroboration for the Bronze Star if the circumstances themselves indicate bravery in the face of the enemy. The Silver Star may require better documentation and direct observation, but I don't know the exact details. It is usually awarded for personal sacrifice made on the battlefield or for saving another soldier in combat.

By the way, the Purple Heart is the oldest military award in this country and one of the oldest existing combat awards in teh world. It was established by General George Washington during the American Revolution.

And while I realize it was a typo, you get the metal (shrapnel) BEFORE you get the medal! :)

I figured the Purple Hearts was a given, was thinking more the Bronze or Silver Stars... From what I understand, the Medal of Honor needs to be witnessed by an officer, so figured the higher you go the harder it was to prove.

What has been the youngest person to get such a thing as a Purple Heart? I do hope that she gets some type of reward of recognition for this. I also agree with gcutler and I also think that he should get a special reward as well.

The news is saying that she did indeed have gunshot wounds. If the news would quit pulling facts out of their backsides and the gov't would quit thinking it will end the world if they tell the facts about someones injury, things would be a whole lot better.

I see that her parents and brother are flying to Germany to see her today. Nice to know she'll see them soon.

The rest of the MIAs from her company were among the bodies recovered when she was rescued. Including the POWs shown on tv, everyone from her company is acounted for now.
