I hope DirecTV gets every HD channel out there, but they have never promised they will add them all.
There will always be differences in the channel lineup.
If it turns out Dish has more HD channels that a customer wants, he will have to go there, just as we always have with SD.

Although I am quite happy with D*'s channel line up, it would be nice to have the rest of the HBO's, etc., since we are paying for them. I am sure they will appear in time, although I wonder why the delay.

Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and cancel my HBO. Premium movie channels in SD are f**ing worthless (it's awful to have a movie show up that I'd like to watch, but only in pan-n-scan). I can't really see paying $14 a month for a single channel (with a second time delay feed, also pretty worthless with a DVR). I used to subscribe when I was on cable, because even a single additional HD channel when they only had about 8 others was nice, but it seems like pretty poor value on DirecTV. If they add the other channels I should be getting with my subscription I might reconsider adding it.

I don't understand the push for more Premiums in HD...HBO2, HBOS, HBOF all cycle through the same movies HBO has. The same goes for Starz & others. If movies are big to you, I suggest Netflix or BB.

Actually, only partially true.
Movies are cycled through to some extent but they are often cycled in different months. For example, Flags of our Fathers was on the main HBO channels for a few months but then moved to the "other" channels. There goes the HD.
Other examples of non-cycled movies abound for older or smaller releases. I just finished reading The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. Wanted to rewatch the movie. It is on but on an SD-only channel. I had to use a Netflix swap to watch it when I could have seen it in HD by the flick of a button if we had more HD movie channels.
The myth is that it is all repetition but it really isn't repitition like the East and West coast feeds. The repetition is more spread out and can be quite useful, for when we miss things or we have a whim to watch something different or unplanned. (I have Netflix for Blu Ray and am using BB by mail to watch TV series like Babylon 5 but those things take days or a trip to the store.)
Besides, there isn't much more HD out there when you count out the premium movie channels.

And by my count there are 17 channels DirecTV had that Dish doesn't...
I admit that I am chomping at the bit for them to add some of the channels.. but good things come to those who wait and we have been ahead of the curve for a long time now. I do not begrudge the run-up of all the LIL's for those who have waited so long, and I get, don't like mind you, but get, the big run up of channels to handle the college and professional football seasons.
DirecTV quite obviously has a plan and they are sticking to it. There are starting to appear rumors for a October 15th rollout of channels that we have been waiting for... and that is only 3 more weeks.. hang in there.

I don't care for the TWC, or Comcast comparison, as they should take the mean of all of TWC's networks not just the largest.

+1. The multiplex are not really time shifted versions of each other. They are organized more around themes.
http://www.hbo.com/img/schedule/hdfaqicons/faq_hbo_all.gif
HBO operates seven multiplex channels and a Movies on Demand service (HBO On Demand).
From Wikipedia:
HBO: Popular movies, first-run films, original movies, and original series.
HBO2: Secondary channel, features more movies, series and original pictures as well as R-rated films during the day, unlike HBO.
HBO Comedy: Less serious films and shows as well as rebroadcasts of HBO comedy series and specials; airs R-rated films during the day, but only broadcasts adult comedy specials at night.
HBO Family: Movies and series aimed at a younger audience as well as films for the whole family; only airs 'G' or 'PG' rated films starting at 11:30 A.M. EST/PST and airs 'PG-13' films starting late afternoons. Does not show R Movies or TV-MA.
HBO Latino: Spanish language version of HBO, for Spanish-speaking audiences. Airs HBO productions including original series dubbed in Spanish as well as Hollywood blockbusters and Spanish-language films. Also airs boxing and the original series Boxeo De Oro.
HBO Signature: (My favorite) Quality films, original HBO series and specials geared primarily at women, the channel's target audience.
HBO Zone: Airs programming aimed at a younger audience, usually 18-35 years of age, as well as adult-oriented programming at night.
All seven HBO channels are simulcast in high definition. Some of the channels are available in East and West versions.
Cinemax operates eight multiplex channels and a Movies on Demand service (MAX On Demand).
Max: the main "flagship" feed; blockbuster movies, first-run films, favorite movies.
MoreMax: a secondary channel with similar content to Cinemax, also includes foreign films, indie flicks and arthouse releases.
@Max: Targeted to younger generation, features contemporary films, movies with a poor attitude exemplified and films with unique ideas.
ActionMax: action movies including blockbusters, westerns, war pictures and martial arts films.
OuterMax: Sci-Fi, Horror and Fantasy films.
ThrillerMax: Mystery, suspense, horror and thriller movies .
Wmax: Targeted at women, features dramas, mysteries and classic romance pictures.
5StarMax: Modern classics, featuring award-winning films and timeless treasures.
All Cinemax channels are simulcast in high definition. Some of the channels are available in East and West versions.

Not to put words in the Op's mouth, but here is what I see:
Possibly great:
5StarMax HD
ActionMax HD
HBO Comedy HD
HBO Family HD
HBO Latino HD
HBO Signature HD
HBO Zone HD
MoreMax HD
WGN America
Lifetime HD
Lifetime Movie Network HD
Maybe not so great:
World Fishing Network HD
Hallmark Movie Channel HD
I am not accounting for East and West.
Also note that besides missing a boatload of HBO/MAX multiplex channels, we are also missing the On Demand feature for each. Don't know if Dish carries. Just making a note.
From my standpoint, Travel is the only HD channel Dish has that I would like to see on DirecTV. The other channel I really want is Fox News, but Dish doesn't carry it either. More movie channels would be nice, but I don't have time to watch the movies I've already recorded. Plus, DirecTV has some movie channels that Dish doesn't, so it's pretty close to a wash.

Yes they do, and BB and NF are good for planned movie watching. But if I am channel surfing looking for something, I hate seeing the movie I want to watch on HBO2 because I know it will be in SD. Same issue vs. the DVR. If I can plan to watch a movie, or know I want to watch, sure I will record it.

Yes, DISH has some HD channels D* doesn't. Just as D* has HD channels that E* doesn't.
For example, D* has
Showtime2 HD
Showtime Extreme HD
Showtime Showcase HD
The Movie Channel HD
Speed HD
Spike HD
VH1 HD
Nickelodeon HD
Fuel TV HD
FX HD
YES HD
MSG HD
MASN HD
CMT HD
Etc.
There are reasons why Showtime / TMC isn't on E* right now, as an example. There are reasons why some stations aren't on FIOS or D*, or vice versa. (Why does AMC have a deal with Cablevision and not with anyone else?) Some have argued why is HBO on E* and not D*? Well, why is Showtime HD on D* and not E*? :whatdidid
But simply put, all distributors are different and all have their own agreements with programmers that are complex.
More HD will be coming to D* in the near future as those agreements are finalized...thank you for your patience
These comparisons are gold for those of us who are sitting on the fence. For our interests, the two sat companies are very close. D* gets a +2 for FX HD and 101 (Friday Night Lights) while E* gets +3 for Hallmark, Lifetime and Travel. Both get a minus for not having Fox News. The Mrs likes the three extra on E* on while I want the two extras on D*.

D* feels it has very compelling HD offering and will continue to add to those offerings, but like any agreement it does take multiple entities to get an agreement(s) done. More HD iwill be coming to D* in the near future as those agreements are finalized (just as I'm sure other providers will need to come to terms with parties that D* has already consumated).

Evidently, if you don't like movies you will not see value in those channels. And from that point it's a matter of opinion on everything.
For example, I could not care about BTN HD or Fuel Tv HD or CSTV HD, but I understand that they could be killer channels for a Sports lover.
However, you have to understand that for movies lovers, HBO and Cinemax are like ESPN. And unfortunately, on the HD side, Directv does not yet get a passing grade there.

Showtime's Original Series are awesome... Dexter, Weeds, Californication... WAAAY better than anything HBO has to offer.
I haven't gotten onto those shows yet, but by popularity alone, I think it's fair to say that HBO does not have a strong lineup of series this season to match up. I am only watching True Blood. I have not tried Entourage.
However, traditionally, HBO has stronger shows or miniseries. It turned out that this year, the Sopranos, Rome and The Wire came to an end. Oz is done. Sex and the City - done (?). I am unsure about Six feet under, Deadwood, and In Treatment. But those are highly rated stuff.
Showtime's boxing does not yet have the same caliber names as HBO's, and HBO's comedy shows and sports shows are also stronger. On the movie side, HBO and Cinemax seem to have the studio arrangements that gives them access to a alrger crop of blockbusters than Showtime and TMC. .And TMC that used to be equal to Cinemax has not lossomed into a multiplex of its own.
I agree that Showtime is more compelling than it used to be. But perception is not there yet. Case in point, D* has more deals trying to push Showtime than HBO. Could be because they made a big investment in it too. Time will tell whether Showtime will continue improving.
But I want them all. I am paying for all them. I just would like each piece to hold its own. For now, the HBO/cinemax piece on D* needs to step up.

The movie channels would be really nice to have for the people who are paying for the premium channels and only getting them in SD. Also travel would be great to have in HD. Would D* even consider dropping a couple of its HDPPV channels to add these in? That is assuming of course that they do not have room to add more HD without dropping something. Personally I think having like 70 PPV channels is a waste. Everytime I've scrolled through the list of them the EXACT SAME MOVIE is on like 15 channels and appears to have started at the same time, although maybe it is different by like 15 minutes. 30 HD PPV channels is extreme when there is still HD content people would like can you could easily add it by dropping just 10 of the PPV channels and still having 20 left to run the same movie 2 times at once

I like movies very much but I don't like crappy movies which seem to be the specialty of Cinemax and Showtime. Showtime had a free weekend a while back and I couldn't even find a movie worth recording. Cinemax is a rehash of the HBO movies with a few low budget comedies and some additional boob movies.
I have Starz which I am cancelling since I can't find much to watch on there (even with more HD offerings) but keeping HBO for series and the Saturday night premiers. Starz used to have some good premiers but lately seems to have a lot of kid or "family" movies which really aren't my favorites but I can see why others like the channel. I have a rather large DVD collection so I don't care to record a movie I already own. I rarely watch a movie live so DVR'ing off the HD west coast feed is usually my preference anyway.
I'll admit some of the Showtime series may be good but I will have to Netflix the earlier shows to catch up but the Showtime movie offerings look pretty bad. Casino Royale is the only one I'd care to see and I have it on BluRay.
I honestly don't think I have watched a single minute of WGN in the last year and I am only guessing but most of the shows on there won't be in HD anyway.
I can't even watch all the HD shows sitting on my DVR's now

Oh, but I do like movies. So much so, that I not only have a dedicated home theater (with 126" screen) AND a 65" TV with 5.1 sound in the living room AND a 42" TV with 5.1 sound in the game room, but I also have 900 DVD's, 30 BD's, a subscription to BB online and the Premium package.
The HD movie channels I get with my Premium package are plenty. Would I object to having more HBO or Cinemax in HD? No, but I don't miss them. I don't have the time to watch the 20 or so HD movie channels I currently receive. There's plenty of HD movie channels for people that like movies.

For me, it's not a question of "good" or "necessary" channels. It's a question of channels people want or watch most. My criteria is whether they are considered basic cable or DirecTV choice channels. I count at least four in HD that DirecTV does not carry (AMC, Fox News, Lifetime, The Travel Channel.) I don't watch either Fox or Lifetime, but I believe D* should carry them as soon as they get around to adding new national HD.
DirecTV should get back to the campaign they had against E* when the latter carried Voom. Add and promote channels most people actually set their DVRs around, not some puffed up random number consisting of channels that few care about.

When you read this and other forums, there isn't any consensus on what most people want. Speaking just for myself, I'm not looking for any new channels (mind you, I would love everything to be in HD, but I know that isn't going to happen for a long time---if ever).
When I go to a news channel, I'm looking for news....not whether it is in HD. Nice if it were, but not why I am there. AMC HD? From people who have it, I read complaints of limited HD and stretch-o-vision. As for whether DirecTV carries every single flavor of HBO, doesn't even register since I don't subscribe to any premium channels.
All that said, I can certainly appreciate where others are coming from if channels like those were on their favorites lists. Thing is, I don't know that DirecTV will ever carry every possible HD channel that is now or ever will be available.

Travel Channel HD, Fox News Channel HD & PBS HD would be nice. Chiller HD would be great too. Just in time for Halloween.
I'm more than ready for a beefy rollout. :beatdeadhorse: :beatdeadhorse: :beatdeadhorse: :beatdeadhorse:

Fox News HD has been so limp on uptake, last time I checked NO nationwide system had picked it up.
Why should D* be the first?
Update: just checked around and 3 cable systems each carry Fox HD - in 3 cities each. Golly wow!
My gripe is that when HBO announced that all their channels would be available in HD, the co-headline was that Directv would carry all of them. Now they are available, D11 is available, but we still don't have the channels. I too will drop my bill by $14/mo if we don't see some movement on this soon.
DirecTv is starting to disappoint me. I want to see Fox News, Headline News, MSNBC, and WGN America in HD SOON! I'm tired of waiting for these channels. Also AMC in HD would be nice. And on the sports side it would be nice if ESPN Gameplan were in HD. I didn't even order ESPN Gameplan this year because it's not in HD.
Headline News and MSNBC do not broadcast in HD -- and the ESPN Gameplan games are hit and miss, based on what local/regional broadcasters have games are actually airing HD versions; none of those are DirecTV's fault. Get on the programmers in those cases.
But I'll agree with you on Fox News and WGN; toss in ESPNU and Travel Channel while you're at it....

Actually, FiOS carries it currently in 4 markets - NY (in and around NYC), Northern NJ, Seattle, and Buffalo. Also, per their channel lineups, at least 5 other markets are set to get it within two weeks, including: TX, FL, Southern CA, Central NJ, and all of Delaware. And from what I'd heard, every FiOS market will have it by the beginning to middle of October.
As for why DirecTV might want to be the first to carry it... really? I don't know - I guess maybe carrying the HD feed for the number 1 cable news station might be a good thing.

Interesting reading what some people consider "good" channels versus well, "unnecesary" ones.
When I look at the ones listed in the link, frankly I'd take DirecTV's Spike, over E*'s Lifetime HD any day.
same here. I could care less about lifetime, oxygen, w, or Fox News. I wouldn't mind if those channels disappeared off the face of the Earth. Now if the ESPN channels, FX, and Spike disappeared we might be having words. I am still being patient waiting for WGN HD to watch the chicago cubs in HD.

I'm kind of surprised that D* doesn't have ESPNU HD, Fox News HD, WGN America HD, Travel Channel HD and a few of the other often-mentioned new HD channels, considering that they just activated a brand new satellite. I heard that ESPNU is being disputed over basic tier vs. sports tier; otherwise, maybe it's just taking time to complete the required contracts.
Not sure if this was one of the 3 cable systems considered above, but Fox News HD was added on September 16 to all of Wide Open West's markets (Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus, Evansville). Not a national provider, but still a sizable presence, since they did add the channel in all service areas, according to their website.

My wife really likes Lifetime. But, I'm with you, Spike has programming more to my taste.
What's funny is that my wife never watches Lifetime. She'll take Spike any day of the week. Although mostly for the hours and hours of CSI reruns.

that chart is wrong on one channel, ONCE MEXICO HD.
I have the spanish pkg and I only get that channel in SD
Ahh, you beat me to it. ONCE is available to most anyone, not just the Spanish package. But I have yet to see it in HD. Being sort of an edumucational channel, I can't see it really ever going HD to begin with.
Let's see. I keep hearing "I want" with Fox News, AMC, Travel Channel and WGN. DirecTV could drop Cartoon Network, VH-1, MTV and CMT and have room for channels that actually show HD content!

Why? Cartoon Network shows a bunch of stuff in HD now. MTV, VH-1 and CMT I could care less about, but there's also FuelTV HD.
Here's an idea, how about the carry every HD channel, that way nobody can complain that their favorite station isn't in HD.

Not complain? Not complain! Then what would we talk about? This board would go dead! :p

from the chart... lifetime is one of them... definitely not on my top 10 list>>>>
Saw the fishing channel was one. This could be a positive add, I mean a great channel for those nights when I am struggling to fall asleep and want to be bored to sleep.
