While I'm not interested in the illegitimate uses that the above link makes a brief mention of, it does make for interesting use: using a DirecTiVo with a broadband ethernet connection to eliminate the need for a phone line.

Anyone know if we'll see anything like this for DISH PVRs anytime soon (or plane-jane receivers for that matter)?

Supposedly any DishPVR with a USB port (the 721 does and I assume the 921 will?) can support that. But the question is will dish implement it. Dish uses the telephone # to determine if the recievers are in the same household (and not "Stacked"). The network option negates that feature (unless you buy a statis IP address from your broadband provider, every time your reboot your cable/dsl modem you can end up with a new IP address...)

The only major benefit of the SA TiVo and network is that guide and SW updated can come via network. On the DTiVo the guide comes from Satellite but SW updates may come from dialup (Not sure?), so there is a benefit getting rid of the phone. Since guide and updates come from Dish Satellites, less benefit of having a network connection on DishPVR???
