Is there a proper name for the new Slimline 3 LNB dish? In the past, slimline referred most often to the 5 lnb slimline. The reason I am asking is that I am eligible for a free dish upgrade (not receiver or dvr, just the dish). When the installer came, he told me that I could not get it because of trees. I have in the past used Litzdog's Sun web site tool to determine that I could in fact have LOS to a few locations on my house (looks like either a roof mount on a second story or perhaps one other location). I admit that there are not many spots that see all 5 sats, but it could be done. When I called back to request a second opinion, the local installer did a no show. So, called Directv back and informed them of the no show and asked about whether I could substitute the new slimline 3 lnb instead of the 5 lnb to perhaps remove the issue. I was told that this was not a problem, and install scheduled for 10/24 (a month out - but since I already have a dish currently, not a huge deal). However, when I looked on the website a few days later, I saw that it said Slimline LNB dish not a 3 lnb. So I called this morning, and when I finally got someone in the proper department - I was told that they ONLY have 5 lnb dishes (slimline and sidecar) - no Slimline 3 listed. The only 3 lnb listed are the older ones. I respectfully asked again - saying that I believed that this was a new dish and just saw the 99, 101, and 103 locations. I was told no. I left the 5 lnb as is, and will try to deal with the installer when they show up on the 24th, but wondered if there was an "official" name for the newer dish?
From what I have read it is called the SL3

Slimline-3 or SL3, but they are brand new, in low-volume production, and thus are not yet stocked by many local warehouses. Also, in areas where SD locals come from 119, they may not be stocked at all. Many offices haven't even heard of this dish yet. It could take a couple of months before they become more widely available.
The "national rollout" was over 6 weeks ago for the SWM dish, and it still isn't everywhere yet. The Slimline-3 hasn't yet reached "national rollout".

I was going to say that the best name for it might be Fred, but that is just absurd.

Thanks all - that is what I had assumed as well (Slimline 3 or SL3), but the person at D* that I talked to was not aware of this new dish. I believe that this dish can be used in the Seattle area where I am (as I have seen other posts alluding to that), but as of now, I guess I will have to deal with the Slimline 5 and work with the installer to get it installed properly.

It has been discussed here that people have purchased just the new LNB and had it for the installer to use during installation. I think Solid Signal had them?

What you need is not a new dish if you allready have the slimline dish the only thing you need is the new SL-3 LNB it is interchangeable with the SL-5 LNB
after setting the tilt/skew adjustment with the setting provided by inputting the Ip code, then fine tuning the SL-3 is the same as fine tuning the SL-5. The SL-3
as stated only looks at the 99, 101, and 103 slots.

There will be two.
SL3 aka Slimline-3
SL3S - Slimline-3 with built in SWM.
Also, it is the SAME dish, so don't count on something smaller for the time being.
And before anyone asks, no I don't know when either will be available in quantity nationally. I wish I knew though as I have customers waiting for me to get the SL3 myself. :p

The original slimline 5 setup is known as the AU9-S. Is there a similar model # for the complete slimline 3 arrangement?

The dish itself is the AU-9 / AT-9
The slimline 5 LNB is the SL5
SWM version is SL5S
The slime 3 LNB is the SL3
SWM version is SL3S.
Clear as mud now. :p

What's the difference between a SWM version and a non-SWM version. Confused about this SWM stuff. When is that needed?

SL3S supports 8 SWM-compatible tuners.
SL3S supports 8 SWM-compatible tuners. Thanks, TB. So if you need more than 8 tuners, is the SL3S not an option, or can you somehow "gang" another SWM to it? /steve

If you need more tuners, you'd need a standard SL3 LNB and 2 SWM-8s in parallel, so, no, the SL3S is not an option. There is no way (without engineering changes that no end-user can make) to make a SWM device support more than 8 tuners.

Now that I no longer need 110 and 119 in the NYC suburbs, should it be realigned to optimize for just 99, 101 and 103. Or is it a case of, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it?". :) /steve

It should be called The Stress Releiver Dish:D
For the people who couldn't get D* before because of 110/119 LOS issues.
Alot of people who couldn't get service now will be able to.
This dish i think is going to be real popular in the northeast where 119 is difficult for many.
And for the SWM its great for New or existing homes that are pre wired,No drilling :D on outside(provided the builder ran a cable outside)

Ok, so heres a question.....
If i have a slimline 5 lnb dish running into a WB68 and then to my tuners, would i (should i decide to) just be able to swap the lnb with a SL3 and everything will work properly??

If you have a good line of sight of 110/119 there is no point in swapping LNBs.

I'm just north of you in dutchess county.
Are you going to switch to the SL3/SL3S ?

it is unlikely that directv will order the SL3 for you just because you want to switch if you have the SL5.

Are you going to switch to the SL3/SL3S ?I actuallyy have 13 tuners in the house right now, so I'm not a candidate for this dish. (5-HR's, 1-R22, 1-H21). /steve

Solid Signal has them listed as:
AU9-S (original 5LNB slimline)
AU9-SL3 (3LNB slimline)
AU9-S-SWM (5LNB with SWM)
AU9-SL3-SWM (3LNB with SWM)

Im considering switching from my Slimline-5 to the 3 with SWM. Can anyone tell me if the PI I have right now with my SWM8 would work with the SL3-S, or do I need a different one?
Only reason Im considering switching is it appears the SL3 is as big as the SL5 which should mean better SS since its aimed at only 3 sats. Correct?

There is no signal strength difference between the SL3 and SL5. The exact same dish it used, the only difference being the LNB, and both LNBs have the identical LNBs for 99/101/103 in the idential position.
The ONLY differences are that the 110/119 LNBs are omitted on the SL3s, and the stack plan on the internal multiswitch is designed to look at 101 for all guide data on the SL3s and SWM LNBs, while on the standard SL5, it looks for guide data on 119 anytime a 110/119/103 channel is tuned.
Unless you have Line-Of-Site problems to 110/119, the SL3 LNB gains you NOTHING.

So its the same alignment as a SL5? That doesn't make sense.
When I had dish, I took my 1000.2 off 129 and pointed it solely at 110/119, this allowed me to increase ss on both. How come taking a dish aimed at 99/101/103/110/119 and then pointing at 99/101/103 would not increase SS on those three. I just don't get it. You're peaking(aiming at 101 correct??) to those 3 instead of all 5.

Think of the SL3 as a SL5 with the 110 &119 side lnb's cut off. Center 99/101/103 lnb exactly the same. Dish exactly the same. Why would there be any changes in signal strength??
One could argue that the newer LNB may have a slightly improved electronics ie (noise) but the geometry stays the same.

I looked at the pic, I see what you are saying. If they would have centered the LNB it would prob work better.

Since the 3 LNB's on the SL3 only have to look 4 degrees, (99.2 to 102.8), wouldn't it work on a much smaller dish, like the older 18" circular? I ask because I often take my HD receiver in the motorhome but can get only SD because of the old single LNB dish. If I'm handy with a hacksaw, and I maintain the proper focal length, couldn't I install a new 3LNB (Ka/Ku) on my old dish?
I'm new.... Very New... so please don't flame me too hard.
Thanks

The bottom line is that it can work, but is more difficult to aim correctly and has considerably less resistance to rain/wind fade. Since you describe yourself as "handy" and since this is a "mobile" project, which always come with some trade-offs, it might just work out for you, if you keep the limitations in mind.
So its the same alignment as a SL5? That doesn't make sense. It makes a lot of sense if you're doing an LNB swap out. Re-alignment shouldn't be necessary.

It makes a lot of sense as both LNB's are centered on the 101. The SL3 is just an SL5 with the 110 and 119 feed horns missing. The SL3 also stacks the 101 on both the 99 and 103 so that you will have guide data when tuned to a 103 channel (the SL5 would get the guide data from the 119 when tuned to a 103 channel). Forget everything you know about the old 3 sat LNB (101, 110, 119) that was centered on the 110, as it does not apply to the new SL3
