"Thousands of boxes of white powder, nerve agent antidote, unidentified liquid and Arabic documents on how to engage in chemical warfare were found by U.S. troops Friday at an industrial site south of Baghdad, a U.S. officer said Friday."

Tomsoundman it is now being reported that the instance is a non-starter, the stuff found was not a chemical weapons ageant and the location had in fact be visited by inspectors as late as this February.
But MSNBC's Bob Arnot is reporting that Marine Corps Combat Engineers doing routine testing prior to Reverse Osmoses Filtering of drinking water from the Euphrates have found large concentrations of Cyanide and Mustard agents. No intelligence to explain what this meant, but Arnot is now reporting that the Marines think it quite possibly a deliberate but ineffective attempt at poisoning them, if not it is quite a coincidence that it appeared near this water filtration operation. Put I would say that it could also be imagined that the Iraqis have been dumping the stuff, perhaps to get ride of evidence or just dealing with this stuff in such volumes that they have become semi-natural ocurring elements.

It is clearly documented that the Hussein government has spent the past 20 years trying to develop chemical and biological weapons for warfare. My suspicion is that the bulk of these weapons have been moved to Syria. To insist that these weapons, or the raw materials don't exist, is to ignore the facts.

I guess the question is "Have we found any of it?"

I would not be to suprised that we have not found any yet. I would think that most if any of the WMD will be under the tunnels of Bagdhad. Besides I think most of the military is still working on fighting back the Iraqi's, and they do not have time to support the investigation part of that.
Part of the reason for the "embedded reporters" is to have teh press there if and when they find WMDs. The WMDs I worry about though are the ones Al-Qaeda has. Whether or not Saddam has given his to Syria (doubtful), Al-Qaeda (could be), or Palestine groups like Hamas (very likely), the fact remains that chemical and biological agents we need to worry about are OUTSIDE Iraq.
The other long-term problem we have is the degradation of science education in this country. I would venture to say that more than half the research being done in the USA in biochemistry is being done by foreign nationals. When you add that to the research being done overseas, I get quite concerned that there will soon be a gap between our own knowledge and that of other countries.
