I have 2 HR20-700 HD DVR's. One is hooked up to an 500 GB Seagate esata external hard drive, the other is hooked up to a 750GB Seagate esata external hard drive. The one with the 750 GB is resetting to the internal hard drive at least once a day. The one with the 500GB hard drive has worked flawless. no problems. Any suggestions? There have been no power outages or any thing of that nature.

When it's on the internal drive have you let it go for a while to see if it will reset?

When you get back to the external drive are all your recordings still there?

It may be a problem with the receiver and not the drive.

If you can test it out.

I had a similar issue that turned out to be the power supply brick on the external hard drive. Worked fine once they replaced it under warranty. Wasn't a Seagate tho. My Seagate 750 in a generic esata enclosure has been fine.

My shows are still on the external drive. I do get some color flutter on the hard drive, . Even if the receiver resets, shouldn't it pick up the external drive if connected?

It should, but there are reports of this problem if you get power flickers. Put the DVR and the eSATA on a UPS to fix it if that's happening.

If the DVR loses connection to the X HDD it probably will eventually reboot. If the connection is not there during reboot, that would explain the reset to internal. A bad or loose eSATA cable could do this as well.

Try swapping things from one HR to the other (just as an experiment) until the problem moves from one HR to the other.
How many things are swappable?
* The external drives
* The eSATA cables
* Do the drives have external power bricks that can be swapped?
* Anything else?

If you swap everything and the problem doesn't move, then it would be something about the HR, not about the external drives.
