so i see that espn shows highlights of the bc/ncst. football game and it is on raycom sports. the highlights are in hd yet the game is not in hd on directv, just wondering does anyone think the college football gameplan will ever show games in hd? for example raycom games or the 3:30 abc games. they are usually all hd but we only get our local game in hd.

Nope, I don't think so. If they were going to do it, this would have been the year. It's disappointing, to be sure, especially given the awful overcompressed SD quality. The package will probably continue to die a slow death, as the number of games available to it continues to decrease.

I have seen Raycom games in HD on Comcast and they are pretty sweet but they have been on the MyTv Network which D* does not carry in HD as of yet.

I am watching the Gators game on mynetwork 65 here in the Orlando Market and it is showing in HD so seeing it here shows that mynetwork is carried by D* in HD.

The games aren't on MyNetworkTV per se -- just a local channel in each market, many of which happen to be My Network affiliates.

Here in Tampa the SEC games are in HD OTA on channel 38 (another My affiliate, but not carried yet by DirecTV in HD). ACC HD games are on 44, the local CW affiliate, which is carried by DirecTV in HD.

Well you are the exception to the rule, as many do not have that channel in HD.

As someone said earlier, the Raycom affiliates aren't just My Network channels. Here in Raleigh Durham the ACC Raycom affil is our CBS affil which Directv carries. In Jax FL the ACC Raycom affil is the ABC affil which Directv carries. The games do look good.

The SEC and ACC Raycom syndication packages are sold to the highest bidder in each interested market.

So, local network affiliation is meaningless.

I too, wish that ESPN Game Plan would pass the HD to those of us outside of the SEC/ACC areas.

The SEC Games in Mobile,AL on Raycom are in HD(OTA only)... it's the only thing that Ch 44(Ind) shows in HD. Raycom HD picture quality is pretty good, last year it was SD. Looking forward to next year with SEC being on CBS and ESPN.

For whatever effect this may have on sports broadcasting in the Southeast, especially the SEC, ESPN has signed an agreement with the SEC that begins with the 2009 college football season. This agreement is the basis for the "carrot" if you will, to get the majors (DirecTV, Dish and Comcast) to sign carriage agreements for ESPNU-HD, which will handle these games as well as 1 prime time college game each week. This was stated by ESPN when they announced the 5 carriers who would have ESPNU-HD when it launched.

The "stick" that goes with this "carrot" I suspect, and I have no factual information other than reading the press release wherein ESPN referred to the deal for the 2009 season as the "incentive", the stick is probably a not insubstantial increase in the carriage agreement for the HD version of ESPNU.
