EchoStar's Dish Network to Launch up to 100 New International Satellite TV Channels This Summer (http://www.corporate-ir.net/ireye/ir_site.zhtml?ticker=dish&script=410&layout=-6&item_id=398207)
I can hardly wait to be able to receive 100 channels of programming in a language I don't understand. It's the freakin' US of A!!! When I travel to Mexico, I don't see, nor expect English language programming. Why the hell do I need to see programming from India? Give me picture quality and a decent price. Quit spending money on freakin' International programming!!!

I agree with you. Dish claims they do not have enough space to add certain channels including locals yet they announch they can add up to 100 new international channels?

I wouldn't feel too bad about this since they will use Echostar IX and not take any bandwidth from their main satellites. I suspect this will require a 1 meter dish also rather than the normal dish. Who knows, this might even clear some space occupied by foreign programming on the side slots to allow some more locals or other specialized programming there.

It still leaves less room for new locals to be added. I heard they were using it for internet, new HD channels, locals, now international channels. Dish will be bit by the bullit as Direct will be surpassing them in local tv offerings.

You must not have looked very hard. English language radio and TV are widely available in Mexico. But the main difference is that Spanish is the official language in Mexico. English IS NOT and NEVER HAS BEEN the official langiage of the United States. Get over the xenophobia and be happy for those that are getting something they do want. I'm sorry you only have over 250 channels to choose from. I have a total of 30.
See ya
Tony
MikeW, but tell us how you really feel! :)
Seriously, though, the Internationals have been a money-maker for E*. This is probably where teh new growht in DBS is at. Something cable cannot do very well.

We'll see.
It's looking more and more like 121 will be the destination for future (and maybe existing) HDTV channels.

Maybe they want to be the international channel leader in addition to the HDTV leader.
I think Dish can do 110, 119, & 121 can be done on a 26 inch dish, maybe even smaller.
Maybe they will broadcast the BBC's digital channels, now that would be worth paying for! !
Also ... for the dealers out there:
Don`t forget that Dish does NOT pay full commissions, nor residuals ( unless they change the business rules ) for customers with standalone international programming :(
Just think of all those calls and visits soon to come:
I just want my foreign programming and just as the local paper says ( for American programming deals ) with FREE Equipment, FREE installation, One FREE month, etc ....
You guys are in for headaches

Why do I have a feeling that most of the new international channels will be Soccer and Cricket channels?

If they move the Intl stuff off of 119,110,61.5 and 148 it will give alot more room for people with small dishes (instead of the new 26inch megadish). I am all for it. Move the Niche stuff to 121 (and more locals), and gives us more HDTV on their other slots.

It is actually good for everyone if they put these on 121. It will let them test out 121. If it works well they could put all the missing LIL from the wings onto 121 and give people a single dish solution. If they work well they will be able to put a bunch of smaller markets on 121 and have a single dish (albeit a bit bigger dish) for LIL.

Yeah, use the latest and greatest technology for internationals. Maybe, just like the shopping and adult channels, it will help keep our rates down (not).
If the people can afford the cost of the international channels they can afford the extra cost of the larger dish, switches, etc.
Yes, lots of headaches for retailers. Why is Dish not paying commissions on these international channels if it is going to bring them in so much money? To have the retailers not want to sell to them and have it done directly through Dish so that they do not have to pay retailer's commissions and to save money.
Customers will start wondering why they are not getting the same deals that other customers can get even though they want to order programming at the same cost or higher than those that chose to purchase basic packages, and Dish probably makes even more money off of these international customers. Makes no sense to me.
Sounds like they are trying to be a Globecast type provider(http://www.globecastwtv.com/). All dish will do is just redistribute a foreign signal.

THIS IS GREAT NEWS! Theres tons of bandwidth in this area:) Enough for probably 100% LIL coverage. I think this is a profit generating experiment:)
Given some time and experience HD and more LIL will have space!

Scott, call it by its proper name - Football, since it's a game you play with your foot.
Anyway, I don't see up to 100 channels making sense unless they're all Spanish. You can get international programming for free with no sub fees with a FTA receiver and dish.
Well, Raj2001, if you want to be precise about it ( and here in the USA we don`t have to be ), should we not address it as "Futbol" ?
At least that is how they spelled/pronounced it when I lived in Brazil many years ago

Good point made, why pay for those international channels that are provided free on an FTA receiver? I assume that certain ones that Dish provide are not available on the FTA receiver.
There probably would be enough space for all LIL markets but not enough space for a bunch of HDTV, up to 100 internation, and all the LIL on the one satellite.

I consider football to follow something along the lines of...
"Quaterbacks eatin' dirt
pompoms and short skirts
watchin' my team win
with the twins"
No way does that describe soccer :) No quarterbacks, no cheerleaders, no excitement..

.
Are all these FTA channels available on one small dish pointed at one place, conveniently intergrated with guide info?

Humm... A profit generator experiment. 100 New International Channel's dropping distant nets, leader in HD with NO replacement HD receiver until next Spring? Now there's a profit generating experience and then how many will be adding the Frengi Package?
Wink enabled receivers? God, what is E* thinking and OpenTV? both based on failed technologies. Frikin standardize on Palm and / or MS CE and get over it. But gee, isn't that what the wireless industry had to realize?

Well think of the possiblities. Joe yugoslav gets dish for the 2 new yougslav channels from his home country and conveniently subs to dish for his home channels:) Called niche marketing:):)
Yeah the lack of a new HD receiver isnt good but many of the issues getting it released are legal ones over duplication standards and protection. Not exactly Es fault.
Hey a frengi package I might just sub to that doies 7 of nine do the install:):):D

True, having all of the locals available at one orbital slot would be an advantage but once they get the 121 orbital slot for internationals then that would make a second dish for the locals, 3 if they have to have 110/119 with the dish 500. One could use one or two dish's still if they a dish that was larger and put several lnbf's on it, just as I had seen people post of doing that before with pictures and instructions. Having a 26 inch dish at 121 would not be much difference than having a larger dish with several lnbf's on it. Some would think it would be worth doing that to save a bundle of money on the programming.
Anyone know what channels are being offered? I hope they offer some of those racy european tv channels with nudity, even on commercials!!

Willie - read in the Link provided in the beginning of the thread (some channels are listed in it)
I suspect that as these channels show up on Dish, the FTA option will disappear or become encrypted. I read something a year or so ago about many of the FTA foreign programming going subscription.
