Fans can soon take high road

Monster view will make others green with envy

By Stan Grossfeld, Globe Staff, 4/4/2003

To get a view from the Green Monster, you had to be a Rawlings baseball, caught in the net atop the 37-foot landmark at Fenway Park, or a pigeon. No longer. The Red Sox are working night and day to finish the 280 seats atop the most sacred wall in New England.

Welcome to Mannyland. The so-called ''Monster seats,'' three rows of cafe-style swiveled seats, are all the rage -- and with good reason. Seated 315 feet from home plate, 39 feet above the field, is a strange feeling.

Now you can actually go to Fenway and watch a game without seeing the Green Monster. You can't see the warning track or even 8 feet beyond that, but you can see everything else.

If you choose to cheer (or jeer) left fielder Manny Ramirez, chances are he will hear you.

You won't be able to see the two new ads on either side of the Wall scoreboard, either. W.B. Mason and Bob's Stores paid more than a million dollars for their ads and to sponsor cable network broadcasts, according to Sox officials.

The guys working atop the Green Monster love the new seats. ''The view is awesome,'' said Victor McLean, as he hammered in seat supports.

''Can you imagine how many home run balls will be coming up here?'' asked welder Mike Parsons.

''Everyone I know wants tickets,'' said construction worker Gary Martin.

The 280 seats (at $50 each) and 100 standing-room admissions ($20) immediately sold out. The section is slated to open April 29, although work crews were optimistic this date could be moved up.

The Sox will sell 24 standing-room admissions the day of the game. There will be two concession stands and three entrances.

''It's a fabulous, unique perspective,'' said Dr. Charles Steinberg, Sox executive vice president of public affairs. ''But bring your best windbreaker. They are cool seats, but it's cold up there.''
