View Full Version : Quad LNB vs. SW44 - Which is better ?

If I want to add a third receiver I have two choices: a Quad LNB or a second dual LNB combined with a SW44. I understand that they accomplish basically the same thing. My question is: which method will give me a stronger signal ? Dish Network says that the closer you can get the SW44 to the receivers, the better, however, they make no mention of Quad LNBs and maximum cable lengths. This is an issue for me as I have very long runs of cable from my LNBs to my receivers.
For long cable runs your best bet would be a DISH PRO Quad. You don't mention what you have for receivers so the DP Quad may not be for you due to the cost of adapters for Legacy receivers. The Quad either Legacy or DP is generally preferred over an external switch due to a lower failure rate.

I dont think it will make a difference on signal strength. The problem with long wire runs is more of a loss of voltage than a loss of signal I think, someone may want to correct me if I am wrong here.

Quad, avoid external switches, they are unreliable and the power supply that goes with it is a pain in the butt.
As DishDude said, power inserters and power suppies for the SW44 and SW64 switches are the things that fail the most.
If all your receivers are DishPros you might want to consider the DishPro LNBs and switches. They are more reliable and the switches do not require power supplies and power inserters.

Unfortunately, none of my receivers are DishPro compatible. Does a Legacy Quad LNB require a power inserter ? My understanding is that it does not.
